Tramonti Pizza closes on St. Mark's Place ahead of move to NoMad

[Photo from June 2017 by Cheyenne]

Tramonti Pizza closed on Saturday night after service at 130 St. Mark's Place between Avenue A and First Avenue.

The pizzeria, which opened in the spring of 2017, is moving to a larger location on Fifth Avenue and 28th Street, per their Instagram feed.

Tramonti Pizza garnered some positive notices. And EVG reader David, who alerted us to the closure, was a fan.

"The food — especially the pizza and the pastas — was excellent and always fresh, the owner and staff very friendly, and the prices reasonable given the quality of ingredients used," he wrote in an email. "That said, it never seemed full, so not a complete surprise I guess."

Word here is that new owners are planning to continue operating a pizzeria. The two previous tenants were also pizzerias — (Via Della Pace Pizza and Falanghina Pizza Bar).

Whole Earth Bakery held forth for 20-plus years at this address until December 2012.

A quick look at Tramonti Pizza on St. Mark's Place

Tramonti Pizza has been in soft-open mode the past several weeks at 130 St. Mark's Place between Avenue A and First Avenue.

Gothamist stopped by for a few visits ... and gave the place high marks.

First, the vibe:

There are somewhere around 25 seats, including three stools by the front window overlooking the bustle of St. Marks Place. The music is nondescript Italian classics, the staff friendly and professional, the pace unhurried. Located by Tompkins Square Park, Tramonti is a welcome, decidedly un-sceney respite from the often-frantic restaurants in this part of the East Village.

And the food?

In the pizza section there are seven so-called "untouchables," classic combinations that honor the old Tramonti pizza-making traditions, but all of the pies here are made with San Marzano tomatoes and Fior de Latte cheese imported from the Amalfi coast. The one untouchable I ate was called the Verace, and it was delicious, a simple pie of robust tomato sauce and large patches of mozzarella di bufala on a chewy, blistered crust.

You can find the Tramonti menu here.

There are on this month's docket for a beer-wine license. (Given the method of operation and the fact that ownership agreed to stipulations, they will not be appearing before the CB3-SLA committee.)

The two previous tenants here were pizzerias (Via Della Pace Pizza and Falanghina Pizza Bar). Whole Earth Bakery held forth for 20-plus years until December 2012.

Pizzeria in the works for former pizzeria at 130 St. Mark's Place

In recent weeks we heard that a pizzeria was taking over the vacant space at 130 St. Mark's Place between Avenue A and First Avenue. That transition made sense, given that the two previous tenants were pizzerias (Via Della Pace Pizza and Falanghina Pizza Bar).

EVG correspondent Steven shares this photo... the sign on the door notes that La Pizza Di Tramonti is the new tenant...

Don't know anything about them just yet... and they haven't appeared on any recent CB3-SLA dockets for a beer-wine license.

130 St. Mark's Place is for rent

The for rent sign arrived late last week at 130 St. Mark's Place between Avenue A and First Avenue... Via Della Pace Pizza quietly closed here back in June after less than one year in business.

Before this, Falanghina Pizza Bar gave the address a shot, but it didn't catch on either.

The previous business here was able to make it for 34 years until a substantial rent hike (as well as decline in business) helped force out Whole Earth Bakery and Kitchen in December 2012.

No word on the asking rent for the space.

Via Della Pace opening a pizzeria on St. Mark's Place tonight

EVG correspondent Steven notes that the owners of Via Della Pace on East Seventh Street are opening a pizzeria offshoot at 130 St. Mark's Place starting tonight.

We don't have all the details just yet. The space near Avenue A had been home since late 2013 to Falanghina Pizza Bar, which wasn't ever all that crowded.

The pizzeria will have its grand opening on Wednesday evening…
