Barryville General now in soft-open mode with its new market and cafe on Avenue A

Barryville General has begun its soft opening at 70 Avenue A, ahead of its official debut on Oct. 16. 

The market, which expanded into the storefront next to its existing Barryville General shop between Fourth Street and Fifth Street, is starting with a limited selection of food, drinks and pantry items. (Below from left, co-owner and EV resident Sean Naughton with co-founder Eric Komovoff.)

The opening lineup includes coffee from Café Aroma, baked goods from Party Bus and dairy-free soft serve from Lavender and Truffles, available on Fridays for now. 

During the soft-opening period, the market will generally be open from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Once the market officially opens, regular hours are expected to be 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. 

The coffee menu includes $3 espressos, plus a café bonbon, cortado, house latte, and a sweet plantain latte made with housemade plantain syrup. The owners also plan occasional extended evening hours featuring soft serve — and potentially a late-night sourdough grilled cheese.

Barryville General, which opened last December on Avenue A between Fourth Street and Fifth Street, is expanding into the storefront next door at 70 Avenue A. 

Co-owner Sean Naughton, an East Village resident for 32 years, said food and coffee have long been part of the Barryville General concept, though the Avenue A shop was its first location without either.

"We have always aspired to do it in the East Village," he said. 

The expansion will operate under the same name and connect to the existing shop through a pass-through, while also maintaining its own entrance.

The café will serve espresso from a local Cuban coffee company, along with baked goods and a simple grab-and-go menu featuring a few Cuban-inspired items. Plans also call for nondairy soft serve from Lavender and Truffles. 

Naughton said they spoke with neighboring Lucky Coffee, which opened this spring, before finalizing the menu and, out of respect, will not offer matcha. Instead, the new space will focus on espresso, café fare and soft serve. 

Barryville General is aiming for an August opening. The café is expected to open in the morning for coffee and pastries and remain open into the evening for soft serve. A to-go window is also under consideration.

Founded by a husband-and-wife team, Eric Komovoff and Sharone Komovoff, the East Village marked the store's second location, which opened upstate in Barryville and later relocated to Southampton.

Owned and operated by a husband-and-wife team, Eric Komovoff (below left) and Sharone Komovoff, this is the store's second location, which opened upstate in Barryville before relocating to Southampton. (They are currently seeking a new space there.)

I stopped by Friday evening for a quick look as they were prepping the store for a Saturday debut...

Opening hours: 11 a.m. to 7 p.m.
