The Bowery Market opens today with 5 year-round food vendors

The open-air food market that we've been writing about at 348 Bowery and Great Jones is opening today... workers were making last-minute preparations yesterday afternoon, as these photos by an EVG reader show...

The Bowery Market, which will be open year round, features five vendors. Here's more about what to expect in the 1,000-square-foot space via Zagat:

The five vendors include favorites like sandwich king Alidoro, Greenpoint's Champion Coffee, LA import The Butcher's Daughter, Chinatown Mexican hotspot Pulqueria and the return of former Sushi Dojo chef David Bouhadana with Sushi on Jones.

At Alidoro, you can expect over 20 Italian sandwiches and salads including their Fratelli D’Italia with porchetta, basil pesto, fresh mozzarella, hot spread, sweet peppers, and arugula. Butcher's Daughter will offer healthy veggie-focused options like juices, macro bowls and breakfast burritos. Head to Pulqueria for tacos and their famous Granada de Piña, a Mexican pina colada made with chili spices and pulque (fermented sap of the agave plant), served in a frozen, cored pineapple. Sushi on Jones will offer fresh nigiri sushi and Champion Coffee will offer signature drinks like Maple Cortado: milk, maple syrup and espresso in addition to classic coffee drinks.

The quick-serve kiosks will feature limited seating in the form of stools at each food stand as well as several benches on the premises.

Eater notes that this project comes courtesy of real-estate developer Scott Marano of Ozymandius Realty.

The Bowery Market's hours are daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The address has been without a full-time tenant since Downtown Auto & Tire left in April 2012. The Deth Killers of Bushwick opened a pop-up shop here in February 2014, selling their brand of jeans and motorcycle stuff for several months. There was also the Nike pop-up shop in February 2015.

There were other proposed concepts for the space, which has been on and off the market for several years. In July 2010, a group aspired to open the first New York branch of Segafredo Zanetti Espresso Café, the Italian-style coffee bar, on this spot. They went before CB2, who rejected the proposal, which included a patio with a retractable roof with soundproofing as well as sound-resistant sliding doors.

Zagat noted that "remnants of the former body shop remain including graffiti."

Former Downtown Auto space continues conversion to open-air food market

Work continues at 348 Bowery, where workers are transforming part of the former Downtown Auto & Tire left into an open-air food market... the new fence arrived last week... and the kiosks are coming together...

As we first reported on Feb. 1, the corner lot at Great Jones will showcase several quick-serve food vendors. BoweryBoogie noted yesterday that the space will be called — The Bowery Market.

The website for the market doesn't include any details on the vendors. Essex Street's Cabilito Pupuseria was said to be a participant. (Their crowdfunding campaign for a food stand has yielded $230 of a $18,000 goal.)

No word either on an opening date.

The address has been without a full-time tenant since Downtown Auto & Tire left in April 2012. The Deth Killers of Bushwick opened a pop-up shop here in February 2014, selling their brand of jeans and motorcycle stuff for several months.

Hopefully The Bowery Market will be a much more viable space than Boutiques on Bowery was across the street.

Rumors: 348 Bowery will house new food market

You may have noticed in recent weeks that workers have built several kiosks/stalls inside the corner lot at 348 Bowery at Great Jones...

A tipster tells us that this will soon be home to a new marketplace showcasing several quick-serve food vendors.

On Friday, BoweryBoogie wrote about Essex Street's Cabalito Pupuseria raising funds to open a food stand in an undisclosed location. Per the crowdfunding campaign: "Cabalito will make its humble traditional mark in a new food collaboration project in NoHo. This project will house six up-and-coming passionate restaurateurs of different specialties."

There are a few clues about 348 Bowery's future via the DOB website (cutting and pasting their all-cap style):

INSTALL TEMPORARY STRUCTURES - FOUR(4)EXTERIOR KIOSKS AND TWO(2)INTERIOR. THE MARKET WILL BE USED FOR PREPERATION AND COOKING OF FOOD & SALE OF DRY GOODS.

A previous DOB permit had the following:

INSTALL TEMPORARY STRUCTURES - FOUR(4)EXTERIOR KIOSKS AND TWO(2)INTERIOR. THE MARKET WILL BE USED FOR PREPERATION AND COOKING OF FOOD & SALE OF DRY GOODS. IT WILL BE ON OCTOBER 15, 2015, JANUARY 15, 2016,
MONDAY - WEDNESDAY 7AM -12AM, THURSDAY - FRIDAY 7AM - 2AM, SATURDAY 9AM - 2AM AND SUNDAY 9AM - 12AM.

348 Bowery on the market again

For rent signs are up again at 348 Bowery at Great Jones.

The Deth Killers of Bushwick opened a pop-up shop here in February, and have ended their tenure selling their brand of jeans and motorcycle stuff.

Kinda wish they would have left the old auto inspection sign alone…

Downtown Auto & Tire packed up and left the corner in April 2012.

And a recap of the action here: The space hit the market in May 2010 ... Deth Killers of Bushwick open pop-up shop at the former Downtown Auto & Tire on the Bowery

[EVG file photo from April 2012]

After sitting vacant for nearly two years, it looks as if the former Downtown Auto & Tire space on Great Jones and the Bowery has a new (temporary) tenant...

The Brooklyn-based motorcycle club launched the Deth Killers of Bushwick brand in 2002... and 348 Bowery here will serve as a pop-up shop for their specialty $250 jeans. The Deth Killers say the shop will be open until at least September.

Here's more from the Times, who reported on this last Thursday:

The cultish label emerged out of a tight-knit motorcycle club in Brooklyn by the same name, limits itself to minuscule and sporadic production runs, and sells in only a few boutiques around the country.

In recent years, the label’s signature asphalt-resistant biker jeans, woven with Kevlar to combat road rash, have become a word-of-mouth phenomenon among grease-spattered gearheads and celebrities like Justin Theroux and Josh Hutcherson.

They opened last night with some kind of Fashion Week party that featured a wheelie machine and a punching competition.

The space hit the market in May 2010 ... In July 2010, a few people were hoping to open the first New York branch of Segafredo Zanetti Espresso Café, the Italian-style coffee bar, on this spot. They went before CB2, who rejected the proposal, which included a patio with a retractable roof with soundproofing ... and sound-resistant sliding doors. Garage door at Downtown Auto now part of ad campaign for fashion label

Over at the former Downtown Auto Space on the Bowery and Great Jones... we always liked this mural ...

Downtown Auto space now for rent on the Bowery

Downtown Auto & Tire packed up and left the Bowery and Great Jones back in April, relocating to First Avenue and 117th Street ...

Late last week, for rent signs appeared ... putting to rest the neighborhood buzz that the space would become a) an Eddie Bauer store b) a private parking lot or c) a Quicksilver outlet.

There isn't currently any listing information at Ozymandius Realty.

Weekend recap: Downtown Auto & Tire has left the Bowery

From yesterday:

This probably isn't much of a shocker... we've been watching the doomed corner of the Bowery and Great Jones the past few years... waiting for the day that Downtown Auto & Tire packed up and left ... there's no place for a auto repair shop on the new luxurious Bowery

As for what's possibly coming next ... one commenter said, "Rumor has it the garage is going to be used as a private garage by a guy who is a car buff."

That's possible in the short-term ... there are also retail rumors, one friend of EV Grieve said that Eddie Bauer passed on the space, and that Quicksilver was now kicking the tires on the corner, so to speak...

Two years ago, 348 Bowery (Downtown Auto), 350 (former Gallery 151) and 352 were on the market... 352 is now home to the furniture brand Environment. At this point, we're not sure if the new tenant would take 348 and 350... or just the corner lot... We're working on tracking down more details...

Downtown Auto & Tire has left the Bowery

This probably isn't much of a shocker... we've been watching the doomed corner of the Bowery and Great Jones the past few years... waiting for the day that Downtown Auto & Tire packed up and left ... there's no place for a auto repair shop on the new luxurious Bowery ... this was a grubby leftover in the shadows of 2 Cooper Square, the Bowery Hotel and 52E4 — the 15 stories of condo across the street.

As the sign shows, they've moved to First Avenue. (That's 117th Street. They may need to change that "downtown" part of their name...)

(You can read our coverage of the meeting here.)

During that meeting, a rep from the New York Nightlife Association called Downtown Auto & Tire Club "junky." During her time to speak, Zella Jones, founder of the NoHo/Bowery Partnership, spoke out against the proposal. "We like that garage. We use that garage. The garage reminds us of what was." Later she said, "We are losing our businesses that don't serve alcohol."

Amazing that the place lasted until April 2012. We'll have details on what's next here later...
