Construction starts on new Ninth Street senior facility

Work has started on the Dona Petra Santiago Apartments on East Ninth Street between Avenue C and Avenue D. Plans call for an eight-story, 57-unit facility for seniors.

While this is a good thing for the community, a few neighbors weren't pleased to discover that construction starts at 7 a.m.

The residents of one building were told by management that construction wouldn't start until 8 and never on weekends. Work is expected to be done during the winter of 2011.

A dormant construction site on East 13th Street

The Post recently reported that there are 39 stalled construction sites in Manhattan. (That's 143 in all five boroughs.) I'm curious about stalled projects in the East Village. One that I've had my eye on: 536 E. 13th Street near Avenue B. Seems awfully quiet here this summer.

For good reason. According to the DOB, there's a Stop Work Order on the six-story apartment/condo going in here. Why the stoppage?

Office space at former site of Waldorf Hysteria?

A few details about the long-vacated Waldorf Hysteria space at 165 Avenue B between 10th Street and 11th Street... a reliable source on that block said the groundfloor has been gutted, and will become office space -- most likely for a medical practice.

Former Waldorf Hysteria space getting the plywood

The long-vacated Waldorf Hysteria space at 165 Avenue B between 10th Street and 11th Street is being renovated...

No word just yet on what this will become... Given recent trends, I'll go with a dry cleaners. There isn't one within 10 feet of this place.

Peek-a-boo I see 2 (Cooper Square)

I swear I walked by the behind-schedule 15-story rental-retail combo at 2 Cooper Union just two days ago and saw nothing (the hole in the ground)... and now? Someone's working OT....

REALLY big crane doing something on Third Avenue

So Second Avenue is off limits to traffic with the street fair... Meanwhile, on Third Avenue between 13th and 14th Streets...this humungo crane is lifting something up to the roof at 111 Third Ave. And slowing down traffic. And making everyone look cautiously toward the sky.

Bellet falls on East Fourth Street

The plywood went around the former Bellet Construction site on East Fourth Street near Avenue B last November....

...and it slowly...

...was dismantled to make room for what the building permit describes as a two-family residence.

Looking at the crack at St. Brigid's

The Villager recently has an article on the architectural plans to renovate St. Brigid's at Eighth Street and Avenue B....One of the major challenges: the large crack on the north side, which is partially detached from the church. Here's what it looks like:

This seems like a nice spot for an ad

View from Houston of a new apartment building going up on Second Street between Avenue B and Avenue C.

Dog gone (groan)

I like to amuse myself in little ways. Like!: Walking by the condo construction site on 13th Street near Third Avenue, the place that had the "attack dog" on duty.

I was never convinced that a dog was on the premises...until the fall. Even then, I thought, perhaps this was all an elaborate (and expensive!) audio system.

Anyway, no more dog. [Sighs. Weeps.]

How will I pass the time now?

And look what those teases did.
