Throughout this spring, 10 fellows, ages 18-26, have been meeting with each other, co-facilitators Alejandra Acevedo and Mark Wilson, and POC artist guests and cultural workers, to share their work and experiences in the field.
This exhibition is the culminating event where the fellows will share what they have been working on with the public! Performances, ceramics, paintings and much more!
Started in 2010, FABnyc noticed that materials, props, costumes and the like were being thrown out after each theater shows load out. In response, we organized Load OUT! as a way to divert what would otherwise be sent to the waste stream, and instead, brought to the hands of other artists and the public to reuse and repurpose materials for their next project.
FABNYC is hosting Load OUT!, a creative recycling and repurposing riot during which we bring together gently used materials from arts organizations throughout the East Village and LES. Take home costumes, props, and furniture for your next artistic endeavor!
In 2010, we noticed that local theaters were “loading out” sets and materials directly into dumpsters after productions ended their runs. Not only were the materials being disposed of inefficiently and unsustainably, but were often of great value to other artists.
As a creative response, FABnyc initiated “Load OUT!” inviting neighborhood arts and cultural groups, non-profits, and community members to donate sets, costumes, props and office equipment they no longer needed, to be made available to other artists.
Fourth Arts Block (FABnyc) hosts its eighth Load OUT! — a twice yearly "riot" of repurposing and recycling activities today. FABnyc will gather gently used materials from arts organizations and other donors throughout the East Village/Lower East Side for this one-of-a-kind extravaganza, taking place at 11 E. 3rd St. (between Second Avenue and the Bowery) from 12-3 PM.
Load OUT! is specially designed to showcase creative thinking about sustainability and the arts. Artists and art students are welcome to take home any costumes, props, and furniture they need for their artistic endeavors, free of charge. Community members and non-artists can also attend Load OUT! for a small entrance fee of $5, and take away any amount of materials free of charge. Everything remaining will be repurposed or recycled responsibly by GrowNYC, Wearable Collections, Lower East Side Ecology Center, and United War Veterans Recycling. Any unrecyclable items will be properly disposed of by the NYC Department of Sanitation.
Load OUT! also features clothing, textile, and e-waste community collections - open and free for everyone from 12-3PM. Lower East Side Ecology Center will collect e-waste, and GrowNYC will collect clothing and textiles. A list of accepted donations is available here.

FABnyc will present the 10th Annual FAB! Festival today from 1-5 pm on East 4th Street between 2nd Avenue and Bowery. This one-day-only arts explosion features FREE performances and exhibits for all ages. Attendees can sample tasty bites from local food vendors while enjoying dance, theater, and music by artists from across the Lower East Side (and beyond!). All performances will take place across numerous indoor and outdoor stages and sites on East 4th Street. Full lineup here
Fourth Arts Block (FABnyc) announces the closure of FAB Café at 75 East 4th Street in Manhattan, New York. FABnyc will be holding a Closing Holiday Party, open to all 5-7 PM on December 14, 2012, the Café's last official day of service.
FABnyc plans to transform the café space into what will be called "FAB Lab." FAB Lab will function as a shared creative workplace and hub for community events and programs. Though forgoing its food service operations, FABnyc is excited about this transition, believing that it will better serve the neighborhood by providing new opportunities for creativity. FAB Lab is set to open in January 2013.
FABnyc originally decided to expand the scope of its non-profit community service by assuming the lease at 75 East 4th Street and opening the FAB Café in January of 2011. FABnyc broke a NYC record for opening a new café, from lease to health inspection, in under one month. The café was staffed and managed by artist-baristas who helped make the it a creative hub for the neighborhood.
FABnyc was also able to relocate the East Village Visitors Center, a collaboration with the Lower East Side History Project, to the space, creating a vibrant spot for tourists and locals alike to learn more about the neighborhood. The FAB Café & East Village Visitor Center has hosted a total of 11 art exhibitions since its opening, curated by Joyce Manalo and Keith Schweitzer.
After consulting with board and community members, FABnyc has determined that the FAB Café space will better serve by acting as a hub for artists, creatives, and local culture aficionados who desire to work and learn together. East Village Visitors Center is anticipated to continue operations out of 75 East 4th, however the structure and hours of EVVC are yet to be determined.

Load OUT! a Reuse & Repurposing Riot Plus Community Coat Drive

On Saturday, November 17, 2012, FABnyc will gather gently used materials from donors throughout the East Village/Lower East Side for Load OUT!, a one-of-a-kind reuse and repurposing event that showcases creative thinking about sustainability and the arts. Load OUT! will take place at 19 East 3rd Street (between the Bowery and Second Avenue) from 11AM-3PM.
At Load OUT!, attendees are invited to take home any materials they need for their next creative endeavor, free of charge. Attendees are encouraged to come prepared with bags, rolling carts, tape, and string to make carrying away items easier. Items available at this year's Load OUT! event include:
* Lumber
* Stacking chairs
* Furniture
* Hard hats
* Sampling jars
* Costumes
Attendees are encouraged to bring textile and e-waste for an onsite collection.

Gently used coats will also be accepted in a drive for New York Cares. All coats will be sent to New York Cares for distribution to the homeless and those in need.
OurGoods will also be onsite at 19 E. 3rd Street hosting a live barter meetup, along with participatory Barter 101 workshops taking place at 11:30AM, 12:30PM, and 1:30PM. Barter activities will encourage attendees to find new, exciting ways to share resources with one another in an increasingly difficult creative economy.
