Four Four South Village bringing Taiwanese beef noodles (and curbside dining) to 7th Street

We received a tip last month that the Four Four South Village chain was opening an outpost at 11 E. Seventh St. just east of Cooper Square.

That has since been confirmed ... and as the top photo shows, workers have been building curbside dining for the restaurant that specializes in Taiwanese beef noodles. (Find their menu here.) No word on an opening date.

For now, the for-lease signs remain up in the window... as well as the banner for the previous tenant, Le Sia. The restaurant that served a Chinese crawfish boil was not able to survive the downturn during the pandemicLe Sia debuted in January 2018.

As previously noted, No. 11 was home to Surma Books & Music for 98 years until June 2016. Third-generation owner Markian Surmach cited a decline in business and the expense of property tax and other charges related to owning the building. Public records show that the Surmach family sold the property to Icon Realty for $5.75 million at the time.

Taiwanese noodles for 7th Street?

11 E. Seventh St. looks to have a new tenant.

There's a filing now for Four Four Taipei Noodles Inc. at the address. (H/T Upper West Sider!) No word yet if it is related to Four Four South Village, which sells similar Taiwanese noodles in Flushing.

The space was previously home to Le Sia. The restaurant that served a Chinese crawfish boil was not able to survive the downturn during the pandemic

Le Sia debuted in January 2018 here just east of Cooper Square.

Le Sia has closed on 7th Street

Le Sia is another restaurant that will not be reopening. There hadn't been any noticeable activity inside the dining room, which served a Chinese crawfish boil, in recent months.

Eater received confirmation that the owners — citing the crush of COVID-19 — have shut it down. Per Eater:

While some tabletop grill and hotpot restaurants across the city temporary closed as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic, the East Village location of Le Sia remained open for takeout and delivery through late March. The restaurant sold its popular crab and crawfish by the pound, but that business wasn’t enough to keep the restaurant afloat, Chen says, as the East Village has been "empty."

The well-liked restaurant debuted in January 2018 here at 11 E. Seventh St. near Cooper Square.

Le Sia was previously closed for two-plus months for renovations, reopening in early February. Their Ninth Avenue location remains in business.

As previously noted, the space was home to Surma Books & Music for 98 years until June 2016. Third-generation owner Markian Surmach cited a decline in business and the expense of property tax and other charges related to owning the building. Le Sia is back in action on 7th Street

After nearly two-plus months of renovations, Le Sia reopens this evening on Seventh Street near Cooper Square.

EVG reader Jonathan Michael Fung shared this photo from last night, showing that the paper had been removed from the front windows. (It's not immediately known what changes ownership made to the Chinese restaurant during these recent weeks.)

Le Sia debuted in January 2018, and quickly received positive notices for its seafood boils and various skewers. As Eater put it — "NYC’s Most Exciting New Chinese Restaurant Dares to Pile the Heat on Seafood." And then there was The New Yorker: "At Le Sia, Find Nirvana in Crawfish Domination."

Le Sia on 7th Street is one of the neighborhood's (and city's) most exciting new restaurants

Le Sia quietly opened in January at 11 E. Seventh St. near Cooper Square.

I hadn't heard anything from readers about the restaurant, which serves Chinese barbecue, seafood and an assortment of kebobs. The dining room was empty the few times I walked by during the winter.

However, as Eater noted yesterday, Le Sia is catching on, especially with students.

Eater's Robert Sietsema paid a visit and came away impressed. (The headline: "NYC’s Most Exciting New Chinese Restaurant Dares to Pile the Heat on Seafood.")

An excerpt:

Beyond the seafood, the menu also offers robust menu of other Chinese dishes — many of them offered here for the first time outside Queens. It’s a bold move; many of the newer Chinese restaurants in neighborhoods outside of immigrant enclaves like Sunset Park or Flushing either come from restaurateurs with experience in Western-style restaurants (like Little Tong) or offer water-downed versions of traditional Chinese fare (like Han Dynasty).

Hunan and Sichuan restaurants nearby already stir fry fresh green chiles with sliced pork or pork belly, for example, but here, fiery peppers are instead tossed with gluey cubes of pig trotter, with a texture something like melting gummy bears. Called “wok-fried hog hoof jelly with pepper” ($16.95), it’s one of four chef’s specials. Another less-known dish available here is a “dough drop and assorted vegetable soup” ($12.95), a comforting tomato broth with free-form dumplings.

And in conclusion...

For now Le Sia is BYOB, making it one of the better restaurant deals in the neighborhood, and also one of the most exciting. With a restaurant right in the East Village, the owners clearly have faith that people other than first generation Chinese immigrants will dig the foods of their hometowns — it’s pure genius that may pay off in a big way.
