Reader appreciation: Mamoum's Falafel

A short and sweet reader appreciation via the EVG inbox...

Mamoun's because it still reminds me of St. Mark's Place as it was a few years ago (even though this is a different location on the block).

Mamoun's is at 30 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue. They are open Sunday through Thursday 11 a.m. to 11 p.m., with a midnight close on Friday and Saturday.

You may have noticed renovations in recent weeks at 22 St. Mark's Place, the former Mamoun's space between Second Avenue and Third Avenue. (Mamoun's relocated to 30 St. Mark's Place in May.)

Per EVG correspondent Steven, signage went up yesterday at No. 22 for Chi Snack Shop...



...which is going to be an Asian snack shop serving a variety of candies, cakes and other desserts. Workers said the Snack Shop should be open in two weeks.

The new Mamoun's Falafel is now open on St. Mark's Place

The new Mamoun's location opened today at 30 St. Mark's Place ... a larger space a few storefronts away from their previous spot on the block between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.

As we first reported back in December, Mamoun's is moving from their longtime home at 22 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue to No. 30 a few storefronts to the east.



And today tomorrow is the grand opening.

The owners of the 45-year-old falafel joint, who signed a 10-year lease, double their size to 1,400 square feet with the move.

The previous tenant at No. 30, Red & Gold Boil, closed after 13 months in business in early October.

As we first reported back in December, Mamoun's will be relocating to this larger space from their longtime home at 22 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.

We haven't heard an exact open date yet for No. 30. The move is supposed to take place this spring.

As previously noted, the 45-year-old Mamoun's is moving a few storefronts to the east (No. 22 to No. 30) on St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.

EVG contributor Derek Berg took a look inside the space the other day to see how the renovations were going... as workers are de-Red & Gold Boil-ing the interior...



The larger space for the falafel restaurant is expected to open this spring.

In case you missed our post on this during the holiday break... in the weeks ahead, Mamoun's Falafel will be relocating a few storefronts away from their longtime home at 22 St. Mark's Place to 30 St. Mark's Place here between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.

The Commercial Observer has a few more details on the relocation.

The 45-year-old falafel joint ... will double its size to 1,400 square feet ... Mamoun’s is taking the space for 10 years ... Asking rent in the deal was $250 per square foot. Mamoun’s is expected to open within the next three months, according to James Famularo of Eastern Consolidated.

Workers have been gutting the former Red & Gold Boil at 30 St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.

And a familiar name will be taking over the space: Mamoun's Falafel.



EVG correspondent Steven got confirmation yesterday that Mamoun's will be relocating here from its current location a few storefronts away at No. 22 this coming spring.

Red & Gold Boil closed after 13 months in business in early October. The previous tenant, Japadog, had a better run with 25 months in operation.

[UPDATED] Mamoun's remains closed on St. Mark's Place, thanks to Con Ed

Just after Dec. 25, we noticed that Mamoun's was closed on St. Mark's Place... we didn't think much of it... maybe they were taking time off when so many people were away, or something ... Well, one week later, the place is still closed. And there's a sign on the door with an explanation...

Here's basically the same message via Mamoun's Facebook page:

Con Edison shut off our gas at the Saint Marks location because of a gas leak at the building. Our line was not affected but they shut it off anyway. We cannot get con edison to come back and turn it back on because of their huge bureaucracy! We have been trying since Friday. Any suggestions people? Does anyone out there know anyone at Con Edison that could help us out?

Earlier in the fall, East Village Thai on East Seventh Street had to close because of a gas problem in the building. They didn't reopen for two months.
