Have you been pining away for MulchFest 2021?

On the third day of MulchFest ...

MulchFest 2021 is officially underway (as of Dec. 26). Through Jan. 9, you may drop off your Christmas tree in Tompkins Square Park (see the photo above by Steven).

Then!

On Saturday, Jan. 2 and Jan. 9, the Parks Department will be mulching up the trees In Tompkins from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. ... where you may take away a bag of weapons-grade mulch for your own garden, tree bed, potted plant, nightstand, green smoothie, etc.

Weather permitting, the Sanitation Department will also collect and compost (non-decorated) trees left curbside from Jan. 4 through Jan. 15.

Countdown to MulchFest 2021!

This weekend, someone dropped off a small Christmas tree at the site of the annual MulchFest in Tompkins Square Park.

Perhaps the resident wanted to make space in the apartment for the Halloween decorations.

By the way, NYC Parks recycled a record 48,230 trees during Mulchfest 2020. The previous record was 30,226 trees in 2014, per this news release. Well, here's one for 2021.

Today is MulchFest Part 2 in Tompkins Square Park

As a reminder... today marks the second round of MulchFest 2020. Head over to Tompkins Square Park from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. for the metal mulching machine.

The above photo, depicting a creative way to haul a discarded Christmas tree, is from Tompkins Square Park Thursday via Derek Berg. (P.S. Please do not attempt to throw a carpet into the mulcher.)

Chip shots: Day 1 highlights of the MulchFest

The first holiday day of obligation of 2020 — #MulchFest.

These photos from Tompkins Square Park are via EVG correspondent Steven...

... and you can take as mulch as you want for flower beds, tree wells, paleo pancakes, etc. ...

Back at it next Saturday (Jan. 11!) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Day 1 of MulchFest promises to be a tree for all

[Reader photo from Wednesday]

Let the puns chipping commence! Today marks the first of two Chipping Saturdays this month in Tompkins Square Park.

From 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today and then again next Saturday (Jan. 11!), park workers will be mulching up the Christmas trees that residents have dropped off in the Park. You can even take a little mulch with you.

Per the Parks Dept. website: "We'll chip your tree and give you your very own bag of mulch to use in your backyard or to make a winter bed for a street tree."

Meanwhile, we need a tow truck to get this one over to be mulched... spotted this morning on 14th Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue...

MulchFest officially underway with first arrivals in Tompkins Square Park

MulchFest season is now upon us. Starting today, residents may drop off Christmas trees at any MulchFest location through Jan. 11.

EVG MulchFest Senior Editor Steven noted that two trees have already arrived in Tompkins Square Park, perhaps by residents who will be traveling for the remainder of the holidays or need the space for setting up the New Year's buffet.

The trees will gather here until Chipping Saturdays, which take place on Jan. 4 and Jan. 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Per the Parks Dept. website:

Bring your tree to a chipping site on Chipping Saturdays to take home a tree-mento! We'll chip your tree and give you your very own bag of mulch to use in your backyard or to make a winter bed for a street tree.

Twas 8 days before Christmas: MulchFest signage arrives in Tompkins Square Park

In case you were wondering, eight days before Christmas, when you might be able to mulch your tree after the holidays (did you even buy one yet?) ... the city is getting an early start with the MulchFesting promotion. Signage arrived in the center of Tompkins Square Park over the weekend.

According to the Parks Department website, you may drop off your tree at any Mulchfest location between Dec. 26 and Jan. 11. Chipping Saturdays will then take place on Jan. 4 and Jan. 11 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Back to the Parks Dept. website:

Bring your tree to a chipping site on Chipping Saturdays to take home a tree-mento! We'll chip your tree and give you your very own bag of mulch to use in your backyard or to make a winter bed for a street tree.

Stay tuned for a few dozen more MulchFest posts and mulch-related puns (I know this mulch is true!) between now and Jan. 11.

MulchFest Day 2 Preview: 87 things you need to know about today's Chip-a-thon in Tompkins Square Park

Well, maybe three things.

1. There aren't many trees. What's there now will take about 75 seconds to mulch.

2. The announced hours for the MulchFest are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

3. There is a mulch mound in the middle of the Park... help yourself to a bag or wheelbarrow full to use in your own garden or to make a winter bed for a tree or to blend in a favorite smoothie recipe.

Day 1 highlights here.

Mulchemian Rhapsody: Chipping underway in Tompkins Square Park!

Let the mulching commence!

Here are some photos via Steven as the two-day Chip-a-thon gets underway in Tompkins Square Park...

[Go Seahawks next season!]

And, despite the promise of a Mulch-themed brunch — bacon, egg & pine sandwiches, chocolate wood chip pancakes and unlimited Mulchmosas — the crowds have not yet arrived for the festivities, which last until 2 p.m. today...

... and again tomorrow from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

And there are freebies. Per the Parks Department website: "We'll chip your tree and give you your very own bag of mulch to use in your backyard or to make a winter bed for a street tree."

(Please note that the workers WILL NOT mulch old documents that you need shredded.)

Reminders: MulchFest (aka Chip-a-thon) is this weekend in Tompkins Square Park

The trees are piled highish in the middle of Tompkins Square Park ahead of this weekend's MulchFest (now a 2-day extravaganza, though surprisingly without any corporate sponsors — The Official Amber Lager of the 2019 MulchFest, say).

Anyway!

The Chip-a-thon (aka Chipping Weekend) happens in the Park tomorrow and Sunday. Per the Parks Department website: "We'll chip your tree and give you your very own bag of mulch to use in your backyard or to make a winter bed for a street tree."

The chipping hours are 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. We'll have all eight hours available later as a prime-time PPV event and for purchase as a DVD with bonus content. Look for coverage this weekend as well as red-carpet interviews from the mysterious sinkhole by the holiday tree.

Meanwhile, the drop-off site on Ninth Street and Avenue A isn't catching on as expected...

The rush to be the first tree in the Tompkins Square Park MulchFest pen

The city is officially starting to collect trees for the annual MulchFest on Jan. 4.

Ahead of this, EVG Senior MulchFest Deputy Editor Steven notes today that a tree is already waiting in the wings ... just outside the MulchFest pens that Park workers have yet to assemble...

The two-day Chip-a-thon (aka Chipping Weekend) happens in the Park on Jan. 12-13. Per the Parks Department website: "We'll chip your tree and give you your very own bag of mulch to use in your backyard or to make a winter bed for a street tree."

The mulch also pairs nicely with banana and granola for a seasonal Açaí bowl.

Updated 8 p.m.

Well, the sign on Avenue A at Ninth Street says "drop your tree here" ... and someone has...

This Christmas Day, time to think about mulching the tree in your living room

The city is not wasting any time spreading the word on its annual MulchFest... Steven spotted signs up today at the Ninth Street/Avenue A entrance to Tompkins Square Park.

People can start bidding their trees fir-well* and dropping them off on Jan. 4 for the two-day MulchFest that will take place in Tompkins Square Park on Jan. 12-13.

Of course some people can't wait to discard their trees... this one was spotted this morning... inconspicuously hanging out by the benches in the Park...

Anyway, don't feel compelled to get rid of your tree at the city's urging. There's another 11 months or so left to enjoy their company.

Christmas trees catch fire in Tompkins Square Park

[Photo by Steven the other day]

You may have noticed that pile of Christmas trees in Tompkins Square Park ... in the MulchFest pen waiting to be mulched...

Anyway, this morning around 7:30, EVG reader Rajani Tewari noticed that the trees had caught fire...

No word on how the fire started — whether it was intentional or accidental...

A 2ND MULCHFEST HAS BEEN ADDED BY OVERWHELMING POPULAR DEMAND

In case you missed last weekend's Mulchapalooza in Tompkins Square Park... the Parks Department is holding another one tomorrow and Sunday...

However, please note that on-site chipping will not take place. Per the Parks Department website: "all holiday trees dropped off at MulchFest sites will still be recycled." (But how can it be a MulchFest without any actual mulching happening in the Park?)

Anyway! Goggla has photos AND video from last weekend's festivities...

Reminders: MulchFest is this weekend

As previously noted, the city is holding its annual MulchFest/TreeCycle this weekend from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tompkins Square Park is once again serving as a chipping location. Workers will chip your tree, and give you your very own bag of frozen mulch.

Find more details here.

Meanwhile, people have arrived at the site early...

Christmas trees lounge

You my now officially drag your [Christmas] trees (no home appliances please) to Tompkins Square Park, where workers have assembled the drop-off pen... which appears to have some sort of guard on duty...

Disguised as an ordinary outdoor snowman, this hidden camera with DVR provides motion activated recording of all activity (with 90-day standby battery).

The city is holding its annual MulchFest/TreeCycle on Jan. 6 and 7 (2018!) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tompkins Square Park is once again serving as a chipping location.

So mulch for your tree: TreeCycling to happen Jan. 6-7

If you are one of those people who don't like to wait until October to toss your Christmas tree, then this info is for you.

The city is holding its annual MulchFest/TreeCycle on Jan. 6 and 7 (2018!) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tompkins Square Park is once again serving as a chipping location. Workers will chip your tree, and give you your very own bag of mulch for your protein pancakes.

The drop-off pen should be up in the Park for early discarding. Find more details here.

There aren't any more holiday trees to mulch in Tompkins Square Park

The tree pen is empty for now... just 45 days past Dec. 25. Hopefully we have enough mulch in reserve to get us through the summer.

Mulching commences in Tompkins Square Park while a picturesque snow falls

The 2017 MulchFest/TreeCycle is officially underway in Tompkins Square Park... Despite a botched opening — workers pulled a Kanye and started the proceedings 15 minutes later than advertised — the Park was soon filled with the gentle purr of a mulcher mulching... as these photos by EVG Senior Mulching Correspondent Steven show...

So far, the crowds are fairly light to watch the proceedings... (guests are able to take home a bag of mulch — great in smoothies and acai bowls)

And there haven't been any takers (yet) for the MulchFest Premium Seats, a VIP package that includes Prime Seat Locations, VIP Express Entry and a MulchFest Poster autographed by the Deputy Commissioners of the NYC Parks Department.

MulchFest allegedly happens until 2 (p.m.) today ... and commences again tomorrow from 10-2.

Reminders: You can watch your holiday tree get mulched right before your eyes this weekend

Juuuuuuuuuust a reminder (how could anyone forget???) that the annual MulchFest/Tree-Cycle is this weekend in Tompkins Square Park ... Saturday (tomorrow!) and Sunday (the day after tomorrow!), 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Per the Parks Depo:

Join the NYC Parks, the New York City Department of Sanitation, and GreeNYC to recycle your Christmas trees into wood chips. These wood chips are used to nourish trees and plants on streets and gardens citywide. Or, take home your very own bag of mulch to use in your backyard or to make a winter bed for a street tree. More than 30,000 trees were recycled last year. Help us top this number!

Tompkins Square Park is an official chipping site. Back to the Parks Depo: "Watch your tree get chipped in front of you, and get a free bag of mulch to take home for your plantings!"

Will we actually get to take the remains of our tree home with us? Or will they just give us a random bag of mulch?

If you don't want to watch your tree get mulched, just leave it outside the Park...

Also! The Department of Sanitation "will collect and compost clean Christmas trees left at the curb" through Jan. 14. (The trees left curbside are also allegedly chipped, mixed with leaves, and recycled into compost for NYC's parks, institutions and community gardens.) Don't forget to remove all lights, ornaments, stands, beer cans and plastic bags from the trees left at the curb.
