Monday's parting shot
Seventh Street and First Avenue this morning... Should auld acquaintance be forgot, and never brought to mind?
About those New Year's Eve fireworks
We received several queries about the fireworks display that commenced last night around 8... taking some people by surprise (and traumatizing their dogs).
Given the noise, a few residents thought the brief (5-to-7-minute?) Macy's-grade show originated somewhere in this neighborhood.
It was, though, coming from Williamsburg and not one of the more-publicized fireworks events. This is via the city's 311 site on the list of legal fireworks displays that the FDNY issued permits for:
- Sunday, December 31 at 8 PM
- Williamsburg Bridge
- Sponsor: Kool Hunter LLC, DBA Heads in the Sky
Here's part of the grand finale ...

And how was your New Year's Eve?
Derek Berg spotted the above remnants, including playing cards and a bra, on Seventh Street ... and below, on Second Avenue, a discarded New Year's hat surrounded by what appears to be dried blood...

Updated: A few bars where you can drink all night on New Year's Eve in the East Village
Several people have asked us if we knew what East Village bars had one of those special all-night permits to serve alcohol past the usual closing time... 142 establishments reportedly have these permits in Manhattan this New Year's Eve.
Among the East Village places that will be open all night ...
• Vazac's/7B, Avenue B and East Seventh Street
• The International, 120 1/2 First Avenue (given the bar's usual 8 a.m. opening time... it will be a good 44 hours here!)
• The Coal Yard, 102 First Avenue
• Double Down Saloon, 14 Avenue A
• Sutra, 16 First Avenue
• Lit Lounge, 93 Second Avenue
• Mercury Lounge, 217 E. Houston St.
• Nublu, 62 Avenue C
• Ducks Eatery, 351 E. 12th Street
• Royale, 157 Avenue C
• Esperanto, 145 Avenue C
• The Parkside Lounge, 317 E. Houston St.
• KGB Bar/Red Room, 85 E. Fourth St.
• Karma, 51 First Avenue
Any interested bar can apply for one of these licenses back in the fall. According to the SLA website:
"In deciding whether to issue the permit, the Authority will consider the timely filing of the application, licensee’s disciplinary history (including pending charges) and whether, given the nature of the event, the licensee has adequate facilities and security plans in place."

Lower East Side named 46th best spot in the U.S. to ring in the New Year!
Woo!
Oh, this is according to a news release from Priceline.com and agoda.com that arrived in our, uh, inbox... "Priceline.com's top destinations list is based on thousands of hotel booking requests made by customers of its Name Your Own Price® hotel service for the New Year's weekend. Agoda.com's list is based on hotel reservations made for the upcoming holiday."
Uh-huh.
It's a really poor excuse for a news release. But! It is also a slow news day. (So far!)
Anyway, the Lower East Side is just a few slots behind downtown Atlanta, "Orlando, Universal Orlando Resort Area/Int'l Drive North" and "Miami, International Airport Area." Woo!
See you at the Ludlow Manor!
