As such ... a few props from along Eighth Street between Avenue B and Avenue C courtesy of Stacie Joy...
... and in Tompkins Square Park... where the crew recreated a small segment of Tent City (and not the first production to recreate this time period)...
A moment today on a break during the "Russian Doll" shoot ... with new cast member Annie Murphy of "Schitt's Creek" fame... decked out to fit the 1980s time zone for season two of the Netflix series ... photo by Derek Berg (and we have more set pics TK)...
While there have been reports of "Russian Doll" (aka "Black Gumball") filming around the city, the East Village remains a prime locale for the time-looping Netflix series now shooting its second season.
Crews will be back tomorrow... with notices pointing to the east side of Avenue A from Fifth Street to 10th Street, the north side of Seventh Street from Avenue A to Avenue C and the north side of Eighth Street from Avenue B and Avenue C...
The NBC series "The Blacklist" makes a return to the neighborhood today... the FBI show starring Megan Boone and James Spader — now in its eighth year — has filmed in and around Tompkins Square Park multiple times through the years (2014 ... 2017).
Signage today points to a shoot around (or in?) the Park... with production vehicles parked on parts of Seventh Street, Eighth Street, Ninth Street and 10th Street.
Also returning this week... "Russian Doll" (still going as "Black Gumball" on film notices)... looks to be filming in multiple locations... with notices up along several streets and avenues... including in and around St. Nicholas of Myra Orthodox Church on 10th Street and Avenue A...
Crews for "Black Gumball" are prepping some storefronts on Third Street and Avenue B ahead of tomorrow's shoot along here.
As Stacie Joy's photos show, Jane's Exchange is now Old Ukraine Grocer ...
Expect a laundromat here too...
... and Ben's Deli on B is getting some enhancements...
Ben's at 32 Avenue B served as a pivotal location for the time-bending Netflix series "Russian Doll" and Natasha Lyonne's character. Much of that award-winning series from 2019 was filmed in the East Village.
The folks at Ben's Deli at 32 Avenue B were thrilled to serve as a pivotal location for "Russian Doll" and Natasha Lyonne's character ... and, as a show of thanks, they put out this congratulatory sign today for the Netflix show's Emmy nominations.
The time looping series was actually nominated for 13 Emmys, and received three. The awards were presented this past Sunday.
"Russian Doll" will return for season two. Perhaps Ben's will make a return engagement too.
The church, at 288 East 10th Street, near Avenue A, was built in 1882 and 1883 as the Memorial Chapel of St. Mark’s in the Bowery, one of the city’s oldest Episcopal parishes, as the gift of Rutherford Stuyvesant, a descendant of the Dutch governor Peter Stuyvesant, in memory of his wife.
In 1911, St. Mark’s rented the church, which served members of the area’s large Eastern European immigrant community, to the Holy Trinity Slovak Lutheran Church, which remained there until St. Nicholas of Myra Orthodox Church, a Carpatho-Russian congregation, assumed the lease in 1925. The church is named for the archbishop of Myra (located in what is modern-day Turkey), who is a patron saint of children, sailors, merchants and students. The congregation bought the building from the Episcopal Diocese of New York in 1937.
The church is also known for its annual Cookie Walk ... perch for the red-tailed hawks of Tompkins Square Park ... and, now, the exterior for Maxine's apartment (that bathroom!) in "Russian Doll."
"Russian Doll" debuted on Nexflix on Feb. 1. The macabre, eight-episode series, created by Natasha Lyonne, Amy Poehler and Leslye Headland, is set in the East Village ... with many EV locales, including Ben's Deli on Avenue B, Vazac's/7B/Horseshoe Bar on Seventh Street and Avenue B, and Tompkins Square Park.
Lyonne (who has lived around here and and off through the years) plays the lead character who keeps dying and coming back to life at the same point during her 36th birthday party...
Anyway, I'd been meaning to write about the show — mostly for the use of the EV locales. However, I've only watched the first two episodes (I like it, though I'm not much of a binge watcher. I'm an episode-a-week person mostly). Meanwhile, there have been about 5 million articles written on "Russian Doll," with a few more million to arrive before I get through the next six episodes.
Here then instead, a selection of articles on the show...
The comedy series follows Lyonne (pictured above) "on her journey as the guest of honor at a seemingly inescapable party one night in New York," per Hollywood Reporter.
