[Updated] Eliza's Local now open at 2 St. Mark's Place
[Photo Monday by Steven]
We haven't seen much, if any, activity at 2 St. Mark's Place, the former St. Mark's Ale House near Third Avenue/Cooper Square... until Monday, when a worker was out painting the exterior.
CB3 OK'd a liquor license for the new owners of the space back in May. The owners for the new venture at No. 2 also run Draught 55, a brew pub (40 taps!) at 245 E. 55th St. that opened in 2012.

Updated 12/6
The new saloon is called Eliza's Local... and they are now open. The bar is named for Elizabeth Hamilton (aka "Eliza") co-founder and deputy director of the first private orphanage in New York City. She was the wife of Alexander Hamilton. She lived next door at 4 St. Mark's Place in what was later known as the Hamilton-Holly House.

According to the questionnaire at the CB3 website, the still-unnamed restaurant serving "American pub food" has a certificate of occupancy for 74 people, spread out over 19 tables and a 10-seat bar. The new place plans to operate from 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sundays through Wednesdays, with a 4 a.m. close Thursdays through Saturdays.
The restaurant adjacent to the entry of the St Marks Hotel has been empty since Ayios Greek Rotisserie quietly closed at the end of 2017 after 16 months in business. St. Mark's Ale House had a 21-year run until July 2016. (And once upon a time it was the second location of the Five Spot Cafe.)

About the bar-restaurant proposed for 2 St. Mark's Place
Looks like Bull McCabe's may have some bar company on St. Mark's Place between Second Avenue and Third Avenue. (RIP Grassroots.)
Applicants are on this month's CB3-SLA committee docket for a new liquor license for 2 St. Mark's Place at Third Avenue/Cooper Square.
The questionnaire on file at the CB3 website (PDF here) shows that the applicants are involved with Draught 55 Bar & Kitchen on East 55th Street, a six-year-old establishment offering more than 40 craft beers.
The applicants describe the menu for the new space as a "spin on classic pub food with contemporary American offerings." The proposed hours are 10 a.m. to 2 a.m. Sunday-Wednesday; until 4 a.m. Thursday-Saturday. The seating chart shows 19 tables for 65 guests (that includes a bar with 10 stools).
No word yet on the name of the bar-restaurant for 2 St. Mark's Place.
The CB3-SLA meeting is next Monday at 6:30 p.m. The location: the Public Hotel, 17th Floor, Sophia Room, 215 Chrystie St. between Houston and Stanton.
2 St. Mark's Place was most recently Ayios Greek Rotisserie, which closed at the end of 2017 after 16 months in business. Previously, the address was the St. Mark's Ale House, which had a 21-year run until July 2016. (And once upon a time it was the second location of the Five Spot Cafe.)

Cafe in the works for 2 St. Mark's Place, previously Ayios and St. Mark's Ale House

CB3 hasn't listed the dates yet for its committee meetings in May. However, one eager applicant has posted notice of a new liquor license application for 2 St. Mark's Place.
The applicant is called 2 St Mark's Cafe LLC ... and is eyeing the former home of Ayios Greek Rotisserie at 2 St. Mark's Place at Third Avenue/Cooper Square. That restaurant closed at the end of 2017 after 16 months in business. Previously, the address was the St. Mark's Ale House, which had a 21-year run until July 2016. (And once upon a time it was the second location of the Five Spot Cafe.)
No other information is available just yet about the applicant. The CB3-SLA committee is May 14, per the flyer.

Ayios Greek Rotisserie now open on St. Mark's Place
An EVG reader let us know that the Greek restaurant is now in soft-open mode (as of yesterday) at 2 St. Mark's Place near Third Avenue/Cooper Square.
We don't know anything about the operation just yet. (An EVG reader heard that one of the people behind the excellent Taverna Kyclades is running the place here. That is an unconfirmed report.) Meanwhile, Ayios is still hiring, according to this help-wanted ad.
The previous tenant at No. 2, St. Mark's Ale House, closed at the beginning of July after 21 years in business.

Signage arrives for Greek restaurant opening in the former St. Mark's Ale House
St. Mark's Ale House closed at the beginning of July after 21 years at 2 St. Mark's Place.
At the time, we heard rumors that the owner was converting the space into a Greek restaurant.
And now yesterday, signs arrived outside for Agios Greek Rotisserie. As we heard, there wasn't going to be much downtime between the Ale House and the new venture. So maybe we can expect an opening soon...

St. Mark's Ale House sign down
Workers today removed the St. Mark's Ale House sign from 2 St. Mark's Place. The 21-year-old bar-restaurant closed at the beginning of the month, as we first reported.
We continue to hear rumors that the owner the is going to reopen the place as a Greek restaurant.

St. Mark's Ale House has closed
The sports bar/restaurant at 2 St. Mark's Place apparently closed for good after service on July 3, according to a tipster. (The Ale House website is down and the phone goes unanswered.)
The closure apparently caught the remaining staff off-guard. Our tipster noted that the Ale House, which opened in 1995, had been going downhill in the past year with the loss of a favorite bartender and some regulars.
No official word about what will become of the prime space here at Third Avenue. There's a rumor that the owner is going to reopen the place as a Greek restaurant.
