Sunny has retired, but her popular flower shop remains in the family

Top two photos by Stacie Joy

After 30-plus years on the SE corner of Second Avenue and Sixth Street, Sun "Sunny" Ja Hwang has retired from her eponymous shop, provider of arguably the best flowers in the city.

However, fear not, fans of Sunny's Florist: the business remains in the family and the new owners will carry on Sunny's tradition of attentive customer service and high-quality fresh-cut flowers and bouquets.

EVG contributor Stacie Joy met the new owner, Alice Pi, Sunny's niece who bought the shop from her aunt. She'll be assisted by her parents, Peter and Okhyun Pi.
Alice reports that all is well with Sunny. Expect to see her back here helping out during busy holidays and special occasions. (Sunny's son Eddie, also a regular presence here through the years, decided last year to pursue a new career.)

Alice says that she has enjoyed hearing how much people liked Sunny and how she'd often serve as a therapist to regulars while getting their flowers wrapped to go.

Sunny's Florist is open Wednesday through Sunday from 1-8 p.m.

While "beloved" is an often overused word when describing a business or business owner, in the case of Sunny, it really does apply...

Sunny's Florist is BACK

Photos by Steven

Good news. After a winter hiatus, Sunny's Florist reopened Saturday on the SE corner of Second Avenue and Sixth Street...
Sunny's has been in this sliver of a spot for 32 years... and with arguably the best flowers in NYC.

The shop doesn't have a website or any active social media platforms ... Google lists the hours from 2:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday through Saturday. Phone: (212) 473-0185

Green days: A neighbor helps a neighbor on 2nd Avenue

In other storefront news... Le Fournil was among the local businesses to suffer damage last Saturday night... someone smashed in the bakery's front window here at 115 Second Ave. at Seventh Street.

For now, cardboard and plywood cover the former window space. To help make the exterior look a little more inviting, Sunny Hwang, the owner of Sunny's Florist a block away on Sixth Street, donated some plants and flowers for Le Fournil's sidewalk, EVG contributor Derek Berg reports.

Sunny's Florist is open this weekend for Mother's Day

Was nice to see Sunny's Florist back open on Second Avenue at Sixth Street last evening...

The best florist in the East Village will be open today and tomorrow from noon to (business depending) 8 p.m. ... in case you might need flowers for a mother, loved one, frontline worker, etc. ...

They may also stay open for part of next week too.

Sunny's Florist off until after Labor Day

[Photo from April by Vinny & O]

Sunny's Florist is taking a break... the sign on the small space on Sixth Street at Second Avenue points to a vacation-renovation combo... with a return after Labor Day — specifically Tuesday, Sept. 5.

The shop, operated by Sun "Sunny" Ja Hwang and her son Edward, has been open now for 29 years.

Back to business as usual for Sunny's Florist

Sunny's was back open this afternoon on Second Avenue and Sixth Street... they were closed for a few days "due to family matters" (which included a "nothing bad no worries" reassurance).

Thanks to Vinny & O for the photo!

Sunny's is closed for a day or two (nothing bad no worries)

The gates are down over at the corner of Second Avenue and Sixth Street ... home of Sunny's Florist... there is a sign noting being "closed due to family matters" ...

...with a "nothing bad no worries" reassurance ... Sunny's is expected to reopen on Wednesday ("for sure").

The shop is operated by Sun "Sunny" Ja Hwang and her son Edward... and it's a great place for flowers.

Thanks to Vinny & O for the photo!

Valentine's night at Sunny's

Sunny's Florist, operated by Sun "Sunny" Ja Hwang and her son Edward, on Sixth Street at Second Avenue is arguably the best place to buy flowers in this or any neighborhood ... no surprise then that there is always a line on Valentine's Day or Mother's Day for quality bouquets that start at $10.
