Sunny has retired, but her popular flower shop remains in the family

Top two photos by Stacie Joy

After 30-plus years on the SE corner of Second Avenue and Sixth Street, Sun "Sunny" Ja Hwang has retired from her eponymous shop, provider of arguably the best flowers in the city.

However, fear not, fans of Sunny's Florist: the business remains in the family and the new owners will carry on Sunny's tradition of attentive customer service and high-quality fresh-cut flowers and bouquets.

EVG contributor Stacie Joy met the new owner, Alice Pi, Sunny's niece who bought the shop from her aunt. She'll be assisted by her parents, Peter and Okhyun Pi.
Alice reports that all is well with Sunny. Expect to see her back here helping out during busy holidays and special occasions. (Sunny's son Eddie, also a regular presence here through the years, decided last year to pursue a new career.)

Alice says that she has enjoyed hearing how much people liked Sunny and how she'd often serve as a therapist to regulars while getting their flowers wrapped to go.

Sunny's Florist is open Wednesday through Sunday from 1-8 p.m.

While "beloved" is an often overused word when describing a business or business owner, in the case of Sunny, it really does apply...

Updated: Sunny's is open after all!

Updated 2/14: Multiple readers said that, despite the sign, Sunny's is open!

Apparently, the eye doctor gave her the OK to work today... photos by Lola Sáenz ...

One of the city's best destinations for flowers will be closed this Valentine's Day. (Thanks to EVG reader roflo for the photo.)

Signage at Sunny's Florist on the SE corner of Second Avenue and Sixth Street points to an "eye medical condition" that shuttered the sliver of a storefront today ... and again for tomorrow, Feb. 14...
Sunny's had just reopened after a winter break... And, as you'd expect, Valentine's Day always sees long lines here. (Except for last year.)

Meanwhile, for Valentine's Day tomorrow, Book Club is once again hosting the East Village-based Bloom Bloom floral design studio in store.

Starting at 11 a.m. to whenever the flowers are gone, Bloom Bloom is selling grab-and-go wrapped bouquets and custom floral arrangements.

Book Club is at 197 E. Third St. between Avenue A and Avenue B.

Sunny's Florist returns after winter break

The fine folks at Sunny's Florist — with arguably the best flowers in NYC — are back after a January hiatus here on the SE corner of Second Avenue and Sixth Street. (They returned last Thursday, though they stayed closed on Friday and Saturday with the frigid temps.)

Given that Valentine's Day is on a Tuesday this year, the sliver of a storefront — in business for 32 years — will be open for more than the normal Wednesday-Sunday schedule (The shop may close early if she sells out of flowers.)

Not in bloom: Sunny's Florist closed until early March

If Sunny's Florist is your go-to spot for Valentine's Day, then you'll need a plan B this year.

The sliver of a storefront on the SE corner of Sixth Street and Second Avenue will be closed through February.

EVG regular Lola Sáenz ran into owner Sun "Sunny" Ja Hwang and her son Edward late Friday. They explained that business has been slower (and generally so in these colder-weather months) ... and combined with the spread of the omicron variant in recent weeks, the two decided to shut down until March 1.

Unfortunately, the closure includes Feb. 14, a day when the popular shop sees lines around the corner for the tasteful arrangements wrapped to perfection with a flourish (especially when Eddie is doing it).

The business dates here to 1988.
