Taverna East Village remains closed while waiting for a Con Ed inspection

Taverna East Village has been closed for the past month here at 228 First Ave. between 13th Street and 14th Street, prompting concern from its regulars.

According to a patron, the Greek restaurant was closed without any notice to the public... until a sign later arrived noting the closure due to a "required Con Edison" inspection"...
The restaurant's website notes: "We are currently closed due to a Kitchen Renovation project. We are working very hard to reopen as soon as possible."

The outpost of Astoria's favorite Taverna Kyclades opened in the fall of 2013.

However, ownership changed hands, and the name change to Taverna East Village was made public this past June

Despite the change, readers we talked with said the food remains first-rate.

Neighbors complaining about the trash at newly opened Taverna Kyclades

The East Village outpost of Astoria favorite Taverna Kyclades opened for business last week at 228 First Ave. By most accounts, people are very happy to have the chance to eat their Greek fare in the neighborhood.

However, some neighbors here between East 13th Street and East 14th Street are already grumbling about the restaurant's trash.

Here is one claim by an affected party, who sent along the photos:

"They dump really stinky fish trash not in front of their restaurant but outside of neighboring business properties and next door to the local street fruit market seller ... causing horrible stenches."

Neighbors have called 311 to complain, though it is not clear if they have reached out directly to restaurant management to resolve the issue.

Greek favorite Taverna Kyclades now open on First Avenue

The East Village outpost of Astoria favorite Taverna Kyclades opened for business on Tuesday evening at 228 First Ave.

Owner Caterina Skenderi told DNAinfo that the East Village restaurant will offer the same menu as its flagship Queens location — "which is known for Greek classics like grilled octopus, fried cheese and lemony potatoes."

They also have a pretty nice looking rolldown gate...

Most recently, the space was home to Tepito... and before that — David's Bagels.
