@NYPDTWEETTOWER recognized for serving and protecting the Twittersphere

Back in July, the arrival of the NYPD Patrol Tower in the middle of Tompkins Square Park prompted the launch of the (fake) @NYPDTWEETTOWER account... documenting the daily travails of Officer Tubbs and his tweeting partner as they kept watch over the land...

Now, in its annual Best of NYC issue, The Village Voice has named @NYPDTWEETTOWER the best local Twitter account.

For about a week, @nypdtweettower gifted its few hundred followers with gems like "TO WHOEVER CALLED 311 TO REPORT A 'PIECE OF SH*T TRANSFORMER' IN TOMPKINS SQUARE PARK: NOT FUNNY" and "APOLOGIES TO THE OLSEN TWINS. WE HAVE A HARD TIME TELLING BOHO FROM CRUSTY." When the police department folded up the tower and hauled it away a week later, @nypdtweettower piped down — for the most part, anyway. Mission accomplished.

Why yes — the Tompkins Square Park patrol tower now has a (fake) Twitter account

In our post about the newly installed NYPD Patrol Tower in the middle of Tompkins Square Park, someone began leaving comments as NYPD TEXT TOWER.

An example of the all-cap comments:

WE DONT SEE HOMELESS IN PARK BUT WE SEE LOTS OF U ON TINDER.

And!

APPOLOGIES TO JAMES FRANCO. PLZ CONTINUE ENJOYING YOUR BAGGED LUNCH.

Now that commenter has taken his or her commenting to Twitter, with the official (unofficial) NYPD TWEET TOWER account.

Tweets and free irons that leak

For starters, thank you to Thrillist for including @evgrieve in the listicle "42 NYC Twitter Accounts You Need to Follow NOW."

Per Thrillist: "No East Village neighborhood news is too small to report for the EV Grieve."

Hmmmk.

Meanwhile, might be late on this … Crazy Eddie spotted this yesterday on Avenue A near East 13th Street… dunno if someone has already claimed it…

Long story, but earlier today, we jokingly told EVG regular Pinhead via Twitter that we were going as a cupcake for Halloween.

Haha, blah blah.

The response.

Report: Twitter showing some tweet, tweet love toward 51 Astor Place

Big story this afternoon via Crain's: Twitter is in talks to take a big (more than 140 characters!) chunk of 51 Astor Place.

The company is in talks to take as much as 100,000 square feet at 51 Astor Place, an office building that was begun in 2011 on a bet that the city's tech boom would produce deep-pocketed tenants willing and able to pay the building's high-priced rents despite its off-beat location on the edge of the East Village. That gamble by the building's developer, Edward Minskoff, now appears to be paying off.

Last month, 1stdibs, an online auctioneer that specializes in the sale of high-end vintage goods, a showcase for a large (1,800) group of antique and design and art dealers, agreed to a deal to take the 12-story building's entire third floor.

Worth noting, maybe: Facebook is moving into space across the street at 770 Broadway. Rumble on Astor Place!

Study: Tweets show there are 'pockets of unhappiness in the East Village'

Per the Post:

Researchers from the University of Vermont mapped out the city’s happiest areas using a complex formula that can pinpoint tweet locations and rate their relative “happiness” and “sadness” based on certain key words.

Key words like "sun" and "yoga" (yay! happy!) and sad words such as "hate" and "hell." (How about "another fucking rent hike"?)

(Also. Tricky: A word like "Woooooo!" could be seen as happy or sad, depending on who is on the receiving end of the Woooooo!, if researchers had actually measured Woooooo!)

The data found that the largest concentration of happy tweets came from the Times Square region. (Tourists: duh)

Elsewhere?

While most of Manhattan south of Central Park had people tweeting happily, there were pockets of unhappiness in the East Village, Chelsea and the area around City Hall. There were also a large number of sad tweets coming from the area around the United Nations.

No word if researchers measured emoticons.
