Plywood arrives for renovation of former Vella Market/Kate's Joint space on Avenue B

The plywood is now up around the northwest corner of Avenue B and Fourth Street… we haven't heard anything official yet about the next tenant. The approved work permits just note "interior renovation of existing commercial space."

Last summer we heard a rumor that a tattoo shop was opening here. But that was never confirmed.

Anyway!

The previous tenant, the nice Vella Market, lasted just six months here, closing in October 2013.

The 16-year-old vegetarian restaurant Kate's Joint closed here in April 2012.

Apparently Vella Market isn't returning

Over on Avenue B and East Fourth Street, Vella Market closed without any notice in early October.

A reader heard that the Vella folks had been in a dispute with their landlord over backpay on rent. (There was also that hefty Con Ed bill.)

Anyway, "for rent" signs went up on Friday.

Vella had just opened in April. We liked the place. The previous tenant, Kate's Joint, the 16-year-old vegetarian eatery, closed in April 2012.

Now we'll likely get more of those franchise rumors for this prime corner.

Vella Market remains closed on Avenue B

We're getting close to the two-week mark for the Vella Market being closed on Avenue B and East Fourth Street... One reader heard the owners were in a dispute with the landlord over back rent.

Meanwhile, another reader passes along a bad sign... there is a ConEd notice on their front gate — the store's power has been shut off... according to the notice, the store owes a total of more than $12,000 to ConEd...

As we said earlier, we like Vella Market, which just opened in April at the former home of Kate's Joint.

Why is Vella Market closed?

Several readers have pointed put that Vella Market has been closed on Avenue B and East Fourth Street... There isn't a note on the gate about a temporary closure... and their phone just rings and rings... Anyone hear anything about Vella? We rather like/liked this place, which just opened in April.

The previous tenant, Kate's Joint, the 16-year-old vegetarian eatery, closed in April 2012.

Another look at Vella Market, now taking requests

Vella Market opened this past weekend on Avenue B and East Fourth Street (inside the former Kate's Joint)... EVG contributor Stacie Joy stopped by for a quick look...

Stacie said that they are accepting requests from residents for needed/desired foodstuffs or supplies. "They seem nice, and have a large selection of vegetarian food."
