Any East Village bars that WON'T be playing the Super Bowl on Sunday?

[Photo via our friends at The International]

Because people ask us this question this time of year. (And other times too, actually.)

TV-free neighborhood bars include:

Burp Castle, 41 E. Seventh St. between Second Avenue and Cooper Square
The International Bar, 120 1/2 First Avenue near East Seventh Street
Scratcher, 209 E. Fifth St. between Second Avenue and Cooper Square
Swift Hibernian Lounge, 34 E. Fourth St. between the Bowery and Lafayette
The Wayland, Avenue C at East Ninth Street

This is certainly not a comprehensive list. Feel free to name other TV-free neighborhood bars in the comments... (and Hookah bars don't count...)

And as the sign at The International shows, there is an anti-Super Bowl party there all-day Sunday.

20 East Village bars and cafes to enjoy a football-free Sunday

As I first reported, the NFL season has started. OK, first things — the following isn't any kind of an anti-football post... I personally like football, and am rooting for the A's and Orioles to take the American League Wild Card spots. Anyone but the Patriots.

So, two-plus weeks into the NFL season, I've heard a few grumbles from people who don't care for being overrun by the jersey-clad set on Sunday afternoons/early evenings while out having a drink. (Or just trying to walk on the sidewalk.) Perhaps it's the barking. Or the matching his-hers NFL jerseys. Or the pre-Jäger shot Bro call. Or...

I've updated this post from January 2011... here is a list of a few bars/cafes (some may have TVs, but you likely won't find any sporting events on them...) where you should be able to enjoy a football-free existence for a few hours... (and what's with all the italics?)

• 2A, Avenue A
Boxcar Lounge, Avenue B
• B-Side, Avenue B
• Blackbird, Avenue B
Bua, St. Mark's Place
Burp Castle, East Seventh St.
• Coal Yard, First Avenue
• Fish Bar, East Fifth Street
HiFi, Avenue A
The International Bar, First Avenue
Jules Bistro, St. Mark's Place
KGB Bar, East Fourth St.
Lucien, First Avenue
• Max Fish, Ludlow
• Niagara, Avenue A
Otto's Shrunken Head, East 14th St.
• Scratcher, East Fifth St.
Swift Hibernian Lounge, East Fourth St.
Vbar, St. Mark's Place
• William Barnacle Tavern, St. Mark's Place

Please name other football-free bars-cafes in the comments. (Like The Library? Are they still only showing movies on the big screen in the back Sundays?) The above list isn't 100 percent comprehensive by any means... (and Hookah bars don't count...)

[P.S. Thanks to esquared for help with the list]

[EVG flashback] Bars to drink in Sunday evening where you won't have to watch the Jets

Seeing as its the start of the NFL season (with college football season kicking off last weekend) ... we thought we would rerun this post from Jan. 21, 2011... And this isn't anti-sports...just, you know, it seems as if more and more bars around here cater to various teams, as Esquared noted in the comments here yesterday ... Anyway, the list is slightly out of date... Feel free to make any amendments in the comments...

Not at all comprehensive... just a few bars without TVs... not that there's anything wrong with TV. Or the Jets. We love the Jets! Go Jeter!

Bar on A (we understand that the TV has been retired)
Burp Castle
• Coal Yard
The International Bar
KGB Bar
• Mars Bar
• Max Fish
Scratcher
Swift Hibernian Lounge

Also! If you're on the fence (kind of want to see some of the game, but not really), then consider the Grassroots... they have the lone TV leftover from 1991 at the south end of the bar... the Jets uniforms will likely look orange, though... the color on the GR set has been wonky the past five or so years...

Feel free to name other TV-free bars in the comments... (and Hookah bars don't count...)

And, of course, there are many fine (and unfine) bars where you can watch the Jets beat the Pirates.
