Bendy-lujah

Earlier tonight, Reverend Billy And The Stop Shopping Gospel Choir stopped by Tompkins Square Park to say a prayer ("Bendy-lujah!"), offer commentary and sing for the doomed Bendy Tree, the leaning elm that an arborist hired by the Parks Department found to be "structurally unsound." It will need to be removed soon.

Prayers and songs tonight for the doomed bendy tree in Tompkins Square Park

Tonight at 8:30, Reverend Billy And The Stop Shopping Gospel Choir will perform ("pray and sing") at the bendy tree in the center of Tompkins Square Park.

As noted yesterday, a professional arborist hired by the Parks Department found the leaning elm to be "structurally unsound" … and it "poses a danger to the public." The tree will likely be removed this coming week.

Bending elm looks safe for now in Tompkins Square Park

Workers arrived and cordoned off the area surrounding the great bending elm in the center of Tompkins Square Park last Monday...

One of the tree's support cables came off during Sandy ... and the other cable was looking on the frayed side.

But! The tree is back open to the public (not sure about squirrels)...

As this photo by Bobby Williams shows, workers braced the tree with an additional cable...

GammaBlog has some nice Park shots from yesterday here.

Bending elm awaits its fate in Tompkins Square Park

Workers closed off the area surrounding the great bending elm in Tompkins Square Park yesterday... apparently the Park workers are awaiting for arborists to check out the tree... Meanwhile, it was eerily quiet early last evening ... as these shots by East Village Hawkeye show...

More support on the way for the bending elm in Tompkins Square Park?

On Friday, GammaBlog noted that the bending elm in the center of Tompkins Square Park was down to one support cable, and that the lashing around the cable appeared to be fraying... (The second cable was lost during Sandy).

Earlier today, workers arrived and cordoned off the area surrounding the tree...

No word yet on what exactly will be happening here...
