Renovations for rooftop cottage on 1st and 1st

The Cape Cod-style cottage on the roof at 72 E. First St. at First Avenue is now undergoing renovations... you can see from the street that part of the structure is now covered...

The cottage is part of the penthouse unit, which sold for $3.5 million last September after about six weeks on the market.

The work permits don't offer any specifics on the scope of work taking place.

Here's more on the space, per the original Compass listing:

The crown jewel of this offering is a loft penthouse built on the roof in design of a Nantucket cottage with weathered shingles, cupola and wraparound terrace. New Marvin true divided light windows and a glass block wall highlight extraordinary open views through three exposures. Direct access to the private roof terrace from double french doors create a charming retreat and a rare offering in all of Manhattan. The cottage includes a full bathroom and kitchenette.

As the Post reported last summer, Gale Barrett Shrady was the owner. The cottage addition was the handiwork of her late husband, artist Henry Merwin Shrady III.

She called the charming cottage a "magical little spot" that served as her son's bedroom through college.

A townhouse in a penthouse on 9th Street

I never paid much attention to 214 E. Ninth St., a residential building between Second Avenue and Third Avenue that counted the now-closed Dahlia's Tapas Wine Bar as a retail tenant.

Apparently it's quite nice inside... at least the top-floor unit that just arrived on the market is...

Here's the listing via Streeteasy:

A townhouse in an East Village Penthouse! Must be seen to truly experience all of the amazing design flourishes that went into making this home an Architectural Digest-featured property. No detail was overlooked in the gut renovation of this triplex, convertible-two bedroom with sprawling rooftop garden, and complete with outdoor shower.

All kitchen cabinets were designed specifically for this home and stained to match the neutral color palette throughout, with a custom Lacanche range and full-slab Carrera marble countertops and backsplash. The sun-drenched, south-facing living room has vaulted 18’ ceilings, oversize windows, and a fireplace.

The stairs lead up to a sitting area/media room, which was formerly the apartment’s master bedroom, and has an extensive walk-in custom closet. The master bathroom has a steam and rain shower, as well as free-standing, clawfoot tub, which is accentuated by a vintage crystal Kinkeldey chandelier. Full-slab granite marble flooring and a double Carrera marble vanity receive plenty of extra light from the bathroom’s skylight. The top floor is the master suite, with an operable window wall that leads out onto your own private rooftop oasis.

And some photos...

Price: $2.650 million.

It previously sold for $1.495 million in 2014, per Streeteasy.

Checking out the penthouse at THREE99 — 'unlike any apartment ever in the East Village'

[Rendering of 399 E. 8th St.]

At the beginning of June, we wrote about sales at the new 9-story residential building at 399 E. Eighth St. near Avenue D (awkwardly called THREE99OnEIGHTH).

As noted, a one-bedroom, one-bathroom unit starts at $685,000 ... a two-bedroom, one-bathroom unit asks $960,000... the top home here is the three-bedroom, three-bathroom penthouse at $4.9 million.

And that penthouse arrived on the market this week. Here is the description via Streeteasy:

Enter into your new home through the elevator opening right into your living room. Featuring a light ash finish floors throughout, this Penthouse at THREE99 is all you can ask for. Floor to ceiling window in your living room over looks one of two private terrace. The unobstructed views of the downtown skyline are enough to fill any NYC eye candy appetite.

The open kitchen features smooth and sexy stone counter tops with a classic subway tile back splash. Filled with a Viking Range and vented microwave, is just the beginning of what this exquisite kitchen has to offer. A SubZero fridge freezer combo nicely complements the 100 bottle ZubZero wine rack. Off the kitchen you have two split bedrooms, one featuring a private bath and entry to the South facing terrace work perfect as a guest bedroom. The King sized Master Suite features a North facing terrace with midtown views of the Empire State and Chrysler building. The Glass walled bath is nothing like you have seen before. Featuring hand picked Italian Carrarra marble walls and floors, you are able to relax in your whirlpool/Jacuzzi soaking tub after a long day or just to unwind with a glass of wine.

This Penthouse is unlike any apartment ever in the East Village. Having access to all of the amenities of the building including, Gym, Billiards lounge, Pet Spa, Roof Deck, Bike Storage, Cold Storage, Package receiving room, and a Honeywell Virtual Doorman which is monitored by a live agent who can do everything from guide deliveries to the locked cold storage and package receiving room.

And some photos via broker Citi Habitats (the copy didn't mention the cool Con Ed power plant views):

There's an open house by appointment only on Sunday afternoon.

3rd Avenue penthouse cottage returns to market as a $17k monthly rental

[EVG file photo]

Last Aug. 27, the penthouse home(s) atop the building that houses Kiehl's on the northeast corner of Third Avenue and 13th Street caught fire...

Despite how it looked, the damage was minimal to the cottage that had just sold for $4.4 million.

You still have a chance to live here, though. As the Post reported, the 1,972-square-foot rooftop duplex (apartment 4CD) with three bedrooms and three bathrooms is now available as a rental — for $17k a month.

Here's part of the listage action via Corcoran:

An open kitchen features stainless steel appliances including Miele dishwasher and Wolf range, along with a dramatic Thermador vented range hood. Hand-painted Victorian-era aluminum casted balusters line the staircase leading up to the stunning master bedroom suite.

Enter this second level through the spectacular solarium, sun-flooded during the days and great for stargazing at night through its numerous skylights. This well-designed suite is complete with a spa-like master bath featuring a deep-soaking tub and separate steam shower, a windowed study/dressing area, and corner fireplace. The two spacious terraces flank the second level, the larger featuring an outdoor wood-burning fireplace, retractable awning, and four exposures with views of the Empire State Building. There is also a new irrigation system in place.

To refresh your memory...

The unit is available is furnished or unfurnished.

As for the cause of the fire, the Post heard that it was a faulty hot tub on the roof.

Your dreams of living in a penthouse cottage above Kiehl's are dashed for now

Back in June we noted that those cottage-style penthouses atop the building that houses Kiehl's on the northeast corner of Third Avenue and 13th Street were on the market with an asking price of $4.4 million.

Well, the place is now in contract, Curbed reported today:

When reached for comment, Corcoran listing broker Tamir Shemesh couldn't give up what the three-bedroom pad is selling for, only that it's "going for a very good price" and that "both the seller and buyer are very happy." We'd be happy, too, if those were our new digs.

Well, maybe this cabin will return to market.
