Thursday's parting shot

Reps from PETA gathered in Tompkins Square Park today, urging the public to respect the area's pigeons.

The appeal comes in the wake of an arrest last week tied to alleged pigeon poaching (for target practice) on Avenue A and St. Mark's Place.

Reports: Alleged pigeon poacher nabbed in Tompkins Square Park

EVG photo from January

This story made the round this past week: On Wednesday morning, the NYPD reportedly arrested a 67-year-old man for netting pigeons in Tompkins Square Park. According to published reports, police spotted the suspect on Avenue A at St. Mark's Place.

Per PIX 11
Dwayne Daley, 67, was allegedly caught caging more than 25 pigeons in Tompkins Square Park in the East Village at around 7:15 a.m. Wednesday, according to the NYPD.

He was arrested and charged with misdemeanor torturing, injuring, not feeding animals and violating parks and recreation laws, according to the NYPD. Daley is known to law enforcement for kidnapping the birds and selling them for target practice in his home state of Pennsylvania, police said.

In February 2021, Daley was wanted for allegedly attacking a man who saw him poaching pigeons near Meeker and Union avenues in Brooklyn, according to court records.
In early April, witnesses spotted a man netting pigeons at the infamous Avenue A mucky tree pit near Sixth Street.

Pigeon-proofing the Con Ed substation on Avenue A and 5th Street

You may have noticed the activity around the Fifth Street side of the Con Ed substation, a popular roosting spot for pigeons along Avenue A.

For the past 10 days or so, workers have coned off about a quarter of the block here between Avenue A and Avenue B to navigate the two cranes on the scene.

According to one of the workers, the crew is erecting an enclosure to prevent pigeon droppings from befouling the equipment below ...

Not sure exactly what this structure will look like... for now, the workers are still putting in steel supports...

Carb loading: This morning in meals for the pigeons in Tompkins Square Park

Someone today decided to toss a bag of cooked pasted (with lemons) into Tompkins Square Park along Avenue A this morning. For the pigeons, though they don't seem too terribly interested at the moment.

So maybe all the bread dumped here in the past was just an appetizer for the main course?

Thanks to Vinny & O for the photo.

There are pigeons trapped inside the former P.S. 64 on 9th Street

Someone put the above sign on the Ninth Street side of the former P.S 64 and CHARAS/El Bohio community center this past weekend.

The sign notes that there are pigeons now trapped inside the building after the windows were recently boarded up on the top floor.

They are smashing up against the windows to get free. Heard 3 broken windows in one hour. Injured birds may be found on the ground hurt by the broken glass.

There's a number for the Wild Bird Fund on the Upper West Side.

As previously reported, developer Gregg Singer, who bought the property between Avenue B and Avenue C from the city in 1998, continues to push having the building converted into student housing.

Thanks to David Reyer for the photo!
