A new top for the Tompkins Square Park ping-pong table

On Friday, a truck pulled into Tompkins Square Park...

... to deliver a new top for the Park's ping-pong table...

I don't believe anything was wrong with the last one... the thing is seemingly indestructible ...

Anyway, it is ready for another year of ping-pong ... as well as cellphone use...

...pizza eating...

Ping pong table 1, taggers 0

Over the weekend, we pointed out that someone had tagged the 2-month-old ping-pong table in Tompkins Square Park ... Well, those claims from the owner that this thing is indestructible are so far proving to be true... The table is tag-free again....

Table tennis tagging

A little more than two months since the city installed a new permanent ping-pong table in Tompkins Square Park, someone has tagged it...

We're not always whistle-blower types. But, in this case, we will admit we know who's responsible...

Breaking: Tompkins Square Park ping-pong table defaced, a little bit

On March 19, the city installed a new permanent ping-pong table in Tompkins Square Park. And we've been wondering how long before someone tagged or defaced or befouled it.

Well! We now note the arrival of a sticker in the last, oh, well, since we walked by it yesterday.

What is the sticker promoting? Like the sports fan who runs out onto the field, the network that won't show the person and the announcer who gets all huffy about the fact that someone is on the field (help me out of this sentence!), we will not disclose that information.

To be continued, likely.

A ping pong photo op in Tompkins Square Park

EV Grieve contributor Bobby Williams stopped to take a photo of this couple playing ping pong in Tompkins Square Park yesterday...

When they spotted his camera, the couple — who are deaf — motioned Bobby over. The man pulled out his own camera and had Bobby take their picture. Bobby took one for himself too.

After posing for the shot, Bobby says they went happily on their way into the Park...

The Times champions sex and ping pong, sort of

Today, a newspaper called The New York Times has an article that has something to do with ping pong. The piece includes mentions of the new table in Tompkins Square Park.

The article ends this way:

In 1971, a United States Ping-Pong team visited China. The ostensible purpose was to conduct some exhibition matches, but the effort has been credited with helping pave the way for President Richard M. Nixon’s historic trip the next year and has been described as “Ping-Pong diplomacy.”

Could the sport that paved the way for more open relations between two cold-war powers improve relations among New Yorkers, still shivering from a blustery winter?

Clearly, some are already counting on it. At the Duane Reade on Avenue B and East Second Street, one vertical display positioned in front of a wall of beer features Ping-Pong balls on one side, condoms on the other. Let the games begin.

Table tennis now a permanent part of Tompkins Square Park

Earlier today, the city installed a new permanent ping-pong table in Tompkins Square Park, as DNAinfo has been reporting...

The table is dedicated to longtime Tompkins Square Park manager Harry Greenberg, who retired last fall....

...and if you want to play...
