City pools open TODAY

Dozens of outdoor city pools reopen for the season TODAY ... locally, this means the Hamilton Fish Pool on Pitt and East Houston (above, as seen on Saturday), the Dry Dock Pool on 10th Street and Avenue D and the Tompkins Square Park mini pool... which workers were filling on Sunday morning (don't forget to skim the pool for leaves and beers!) ...
Every year, we hear from people who had no idea there was a mini pool in Tompkins Square Park. The mini pool is open for children and their parents-guardians.

If this helps with location ...
Outdoor hours are from 11 a.m. through 7 p.m. daily, with a break for pool cleaning between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Find more info about city pools at this link. The mini pool is open until Labor Day, with the larger pools in service through Sept. 11.

And an important — and unfortunate — note about pool programming this summer: "Due to the current national lifeguard shortage, all swim programs, including lap swim, senior swim, and Learn to Swim, have been canceled for summer 2022."

Fall at the Tompkins Square Park mini pool

Outdoor city pools, including the mini pool in Tompkins Square Park, closed for the season back on Sept. 12. (Top photo from June by Steven.)

EVG reader MP shared this photo... as you can see, a large branch recently fell into the now-empty pool in Tompkins Square Park...
Thankfully, the Parks Department has roughly nine months to remove this before the pool reopens for the 2022 season.

Make a splash: City pools reopen tomorrow

Dozens of outdoor city pools reopen for the season tomorrow (June 26) ... locally, this means the Hamilton Fish Pool on Pitt and East Houston (above), the Dry Dock Pool on 10th Street and Avenue D and the Tompkins Square Park mini pool...
Outdoor hours are from 11 a.m. through 7 p.m. daily, with a break for pool cleaning between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Find more info about city pools at this link.

Parks officials say they're still determining whether the Lap Swim program — as seen at Hamilton Fish —is feasible this summer. And still not feasible: breath-holding contests ...
During the pandemic last summer, only 15 city pools opened, and not until Aug. 5

Make a splash: Hamilton Fish Pool reopens Wednesday

[EVG photo at Hamilton Fish Pool]

This summer, the city is only reopening 15 public pools via a phased-in schedule. On Wednesday, Hamilton Fish Pool — the only one servicing this area — will open for a limited month-long run over on Pitt and East Houston.

Here are details via the Parks Department website:

• Pool hours will remain the same: 11 a.m. - 3 p.m., and 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. Sessions may be split further at the discretion of the pool managers to accommodate more patrons.

• All pool patrons will be required to wear a face covering to enter the pool facility. Face coverings must be worn in locker rooms, bathrooms, and on the pool deck. They are not to be worn in the water.

• Please maintain at least six feet of social distance, except between members of the same household. If a pool reaches capacity, we may provide patrons with a time of day to return to the line.

• During general swim hours, aquatic programs including Lap Swim, Learn to Swim, Senior Splash & Swim, and Water Exercise classes have been cancelled for the summer.

The pool closes for the season on Sept. 7.

The Dry Dock Pool on 10th Street and Avenue D and the Tompkins Square Park mini pool will not open this summer.

Summer freeze: City pools close today

[Dry Dock this morning]

With the drizzle and cool temps, it's not really a great day for the pool ... in any event, the city's outdoor pools close today for the season. (Hours 11 a.m. to 7 p.m., with a pool-cleaning break from 3-4 p.m.)

So that will wrap up another season at Hamilton Fish Pool on Pitt and East Houston ... and the Dry Dock Pool on Avenue D and East 10th Street.

The Tompkins Square (mini) Pool closed last Sunday ... and it has already been drained for creative Instagram opps ...

Last splash

The Tompkins Square Park mini pool closes for the season tomorrow (Labor Day!). All the city's outdoor pools close on Sept. 9.

I posted the top photo on Instagram, where several people said that they were unaware there was a pool in Tompkins Square Park. (It's reserved for kids and their parents/guardians.)

It's right by the basketball courts...

The pool has been there for as long as I can remember. It's open from 11 a.m. through 7 p.m. daily, with a break for pool cleaning between 3-4 p.m.

City pools open today; and a reminder to have a swimsuit to enter the pool area (not my rules)

[Photo at Dry Dock from Sunday]

The Parks Department opens the city's 55 outdoor public pools for the summer today (Thursday!).

Around here, this means Hamilton Fish Pool on Pitt and East Houston ... the Dry Dock Pool on Avenue D and East 10th Street ... and the Tompkins Square Pool (mini pool for kids!) ...

Most pools are open from 11 a.m. through 7 p.m., with a break for pool cleaning between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m.

There are rules though to help govern our swimming season. Some helpful pointers via the Parks Department website (bolded a few things for you):

What to Wear
You’ll need to have a swimsuit to enter the pool area. We may choose to check men’s shorts for a lining if we can’t tell if they are wearing a bathing suit. Feel the need to cover up from the sun? Throw on a plain white shirt or white hat and you’re set. We don’t allow shirts with colors on them on the deck.

Information for Parents
Thinking of bringing floaties? It’s safer to leave them at home and just stay in the shallow end of the pool until everyone learns to swim. Want to venture deeper? Try some of our free swimming classes.

Babies or toddlers can put on swim diapers before they head into the water. While we may be able to find a place to park your stroller, we can’t keep an eye on it for you, so bring it at your own risk.

What to Bring
Make sure you have a sturdy lock when you head out to the pool. It will keep your valuables safe, and let you hit the water feeling more secure about your belongings. Locks are required to enter, and we will not accept luggage locks.

What Not to Bring
You’ll need to leave food, glass bottles, electronic devices, and newspapers at home. Unbound periodicals tend to blow around and create litter, food can be messy to clean up after, and there’s too much water around to make sure your electronics stay safe. Just to be on the safe side, we also recommend leaving valuables like jewelry and credit cards at home.

Again, these are not my rules. So don't take out your no-floatie frustrations here.

Finally, go here for info about the Hamilton Fish Pool Lap Swim program.

Dips: You may now (officially) swim in city pools today

[EVG file photo, Tompkins Square Pool]

You make now go for a swim or maybe just jump in Hamilton Fish Pool on Pitt and East Houston ... the Dry Dock Pool on Avenue D and East 10th Street ... and the Tompkins Square Pool (mini pool for kids!) ...

As for lap action at Hamilton Fish, here are some details via the Lo-Down:

Lap swims are from 7 a.m. to 8:30 a.m. for early birds and 7 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. for night owls in July and at dusk from August through Labor Day. A free t-shirt is up for grabs for participants who swim 25 miles or more over the summer and prizes are awarded to the top three male and female distance swimmers from each pool program.

No other word about laps at the neighborhood pools here ... and here or here.

Most pools are open from 11 a.m. through 7 p.m., with a break for pool cleaning between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. Swimsuits are also required (not my rules).

Ongoing construction at condoplex on Avenue A enters the swimming pool phase

An EVG reader yesterday noted the ongoing construction in the lot off Avenue A between East 11th Street and East 12th Street that was formerly home of Mary Help of Christians.

Upon closer inspection, you can spot the new building's swimming pool going in…

Early plans for the building mentioned a possible rooftop pool. It's difficult to tell at this point where the pool will fit in compared to the rest of the residential building.

A worker said that the pool only gets to 5 feet in the deep end. Not good for diving, of course.

But!

Through the magic of YouTube, we found one thrillseeker who successfully made the jump into a 5-foot-deep pool… (not that we recommend that the new residents of this building attempt this. But if you must, please film it and post it to YouTube.)

Jeff — you're on…

Anyway! In the works, of course, is a mixed-use building with ground-floor retail and 82 market-rate condos via developer Douglas Steiner.

Wet hot NYC summer: City pools open today

[Hamilton Fish Pool via www.nycgovparks.org]

That means Hamilton Fish Pool on Pitt and East Houston ... the Dry Dock Pool on Avenue D and East 10th Street ... and the Tompkins Square Pool (mini pool for kids!) are opening ...

[Tompkins Square Pool yesterday via EVG]

The early and late lap swims (8-9 a.m. and 7-8 p.m.) at Hamilton Fish Pool will begin in a few weeks, the Lo-Down noted yesterday.

And no word just yet when you can swim in a floating pool in the East River.

About the swimming pool rumor at the former Cabrini Center

Last week, some neighbors adjacent to the former Cabrini Center were hearing rumors of an outdoor pool at the incoming luxury apartments on East Fifth Street and Avenue B... perhaps what would be the end product of all that jackhammering out back.

However! A resident spoke to the construction manager at the site of the former health care facility for elderly patients ... According to the manager, they are putting in an "at grade" recreation area, with benches and a little lawn/garden.

Per the resident: "We'll see."

Will the luxury apartment building at the former Cabrini Center include an outdoor pool?

Well, that's the rumor anyway... some neighbors adjacent to the property are convinced of this development here behind East Fifth Street and Avenue B... perhaps the end product of all that jackhammering out back here.

The former health care facility for elderly patients continues to be converted into luxury residences via developer Ben Shaoul. DOB permits show 81 units here, including a rooftop "public recreation space" as well as retail space.
