Steamy Friday

EVG regular Salim shares this photo from Tompkins Square Park this morning... with the always photogenic Con Ed power plant in the background. As of this writing, it's 18 degrees, which according to the Weather Channel "feels like" 12.

The breaker pop heard 'round the neighborhood

We talked with several people about the noise/bang/pop/explosion at the Con Ed power plant and subsequent flicker in the power on Saturday night... it didn't go unnoticed (as is usually the case) ...

The Villager talked with Con Ed spokesperson Sidney Alvarez to see what happened at the plant on East 14th Street and Avenue C.

“Basically, in a nutshell, we had some equipment malfunction within our facility. In a nutshell, a breaker popped — and the cause was freezing rain.”

The Fire Department responded but there was no fire, and there were no injuries, Alvarez reported.

The spokesperson didn’t disagree that East Villagers had likely heard a thunderous bang.

“I’m sure they would have heard something,” he said.

As for a white flash in the sky, he said, there was no information regarding that in an internal report he was reading from, but he didn’t deny that it could have happened.

“But there was no fire, no spark,” he noted.

[Updated] Con Ed apologizes for the 'inconvenience' of waking you up at 4:30 a.m.

Twitter lit up again early this morning (or, late last night depending on your schedule) with reports of various weird alien noises, explosions, 747s landing nearby. That kind of thing. Similar, but not as loud as in the early-morning hours of Feb. 27.

One resident did speak with Con Ed around 4:30 a.m. They were releasing steam pressure.

Fishing by the Con Ed plant

A friend of mine likes to take his young sons fishing near the Con Ed plant off the eastern end of 14th Street. (They toss back what they catch, though he claims the fish are just fine to eat.) It's a simple pleasure, away from the TV, video games, computer, etc. So I went to check out this not-so-secret spot along the East River Sunday. (Not to fish, just to watch. Maybe another day.) There were just a few men in their late 50s/early 60s fishing this day. Not much action in the water. It didn't matter, though -- it was a relaxing way to spend some time. And before the area possibly becomes someplace that we'd rather not be.

[Updated: Told my above-mentioned friend about this post. He basically said that I'm a jackass. Uh, yes! First, he told me that I would need to obtain a "sporting license" from the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation to legally fish here -- or anywhere in the state that is a public body of water. Or something. OK, Mr. By the Book! Also, he said that I need a geography lesson. The area in which I was sitting isn't exactly behind the Con Ed plant. (Well, it's near it.) I was in Stuyvesant Cove, a very popular spot. Something about piling bases. Whatever! And "toss back" sounds horrible. It's catch and release, man. Landlubbers, jeez.]
