Workers continue 7-Elevening the former J.A.S. Mart on St. Mark's Place

As you may unfortunately remember, we reported that a 7-Eleven will soon open on St. Mark's Place at Second Avenue in the the former J.A.S. Mart. (The official address is 133 Second Ave.)

Workers have been molding the 7-Eleven into shape, as this shot from yesterday by Bobby Williams shows... expect the sign and awning any day or two now ...

The 'No 7-Eleven' chalk campaign expands its reach; plus, drip art

The No 7-Eleveneers were at it again last night ...

... expanding their protest beyond the construction site at the corner of East 11th Street and Avenue A to the 7-Eleven at St. Mark's Place ...

...where a security guard sought to dissolve the protest with some water, creating the first piece of "No 7-Eleven" drip-art.

[Updated] Reader report: The 7-Eleven on St. Mark's Place has closed

A St. Mark's Place resident passes along word that the 7-Eleven here near Second Avenue has closed. Workers are currently removing various machines from inside the store this morning.

[Via EVG reader Robert]

There are three trucks lined up along St. Mark's Place. The reader says there isn't much, if any, merchandise left on the shelves.

No official confirmation from any 7-Eleven reps. (Updated: Workers on the scene confirmed this afternoon that the store has closed.) Perhaps that closed sign yesterday was more permanent that originally expected. Or maybe they are just renovating the place. Or there are some other issues that would cause workers to temporarily empty the store of every machine and food product.

This location opened in April 2012.

New broker for former 7-Eleven space on St. Mark's Place

The 7-Eleven at 37 St. Mark's Place at Second Avenue closed at the end of November 2013. And the storefront has been empty ever since... there's now a new broker for the retail space. (The listing isn't online just yet at Walter-Samuels.)

A few of the storefronts here in the corner building have sat empty since late 2011. (RIP Timi's Gelateria Classica™.)

However, there will be a new tenant soon enough next to the former 7-Eleven with the arrival of 98 Favor Taste, which will specialize in traditional Korean-style barbecue and Chinese hot pot meals

After nearly 4 years empty, 37 St. Mark's Place may be getting new retail tenants

Workers have removed the for lease signs and put up paper on the windows at 37 St. Mark's Place … where several storefronts here in the corner building at Second Avenue have sat empty since late 2011.

Timi's Gelateria Classica™ closed at the end of 2011 in one of the spaces… while Michael "Bao" Huynh's Baoguette Cafe shut down at summer's end in 2012.

Still no takers for the former 7-Eleven space next door, though…

7-Eleven's feeble attempt at an anti-blogger shield on the Bowery

We've heard that there is at least one local "blogger" head-scratchingly interested in the daily mundane updates at the incoming 7-Eleven on the Bowery.

To ward off attempts to document the installation of the Buffalo Chicken Roller machine and Quarter Pound Big Bite® heater, workers have placed brown paper over the front windows.

Below, we point out the weaknesses in the 7-Eleven defense plan.

Uh, hey — will someone please give me a boost?

Fighting a 7-Eleven on the LES; waiting for one on East 14th Street

Down on Grand Street, Seward Park residents are fighting the arrival of the dreaded double whammy — a 7-Eleven and a Dunkin' Donuts. (You can read reports on this at BoweryBoogie and The Lo-Down.)

Part of the online petition:

We are concerned that corporately-owned chain stores in the Seward Park retail strip is inconsistent with the independent retail establishments that populate our properties. We are concerned that chain stores will have a chilling effect on property values as the establishments degrade the character and appeal of the neighborhood for both longtime and new residents.

Meanwhile, on IHOP Way, as we first reported, the incoming 7-Eleven is getting closer to arriving... workers recently removed the big blue Exquisite DVD Video store awning...

Checking in on the Axis of 11

Back on Feb. 24, we noted that a 7-Eleven was in the works for 813 Broadway near 12th Street ... the cheap-o DVD shop packed up and moved across the street...

Jeremiah noted the arrival of the all-too-familiar signage yesterday...

The march continues...into the 7-Eleven zone...

Please do not loiter in front of the former 7-Eleven on St. Mark's Place

[EVG file photo from March 2013]

When the 7-Eleven was still open on St. Mark's Place, it was an attractive spot for camping out.

Now that it is closed, the vacant storefront at the corner of Second Avenue remains an attractive spot for camping out.

Which might be why there are now some homemade "no loitering" signs taped along the empty property...

The space remains for rent.

1 7-Eleven down, 113 to go!

The 7-Eleven on St. Mark's Place opened Wednesday.

We weren't actually going to mention it, but then several readers were like, "You aren't actually going to mention it? You did 500 posts on it until this point."

So, here (or up there), for the record.

And as the Daily News reported on Monday:

At least 114 7-Eleven stores are set to open in Manhattan over the next five years, more than six times the number already here.

Long live Gem Spa!

Imagining Avenue A and Second Street with a 7-Eleven

OK, this is half-assed Photoshopping at its finest... still... just trying to wrap my head around this... picking up on the vigorous debate from yesterday (thank you to everyone for the spirited comments)... As you know, EV Italian eatery guru Frank Prisinzano said on Monday night that the landlord of the former Graceland space on Avenue A and Second Street had four prospective tenants: Frank's fast-food Italian joint, a bank, a 7-Eleven and a bank.

Of course it's very possible this was just a scare tactic... still, given 7-Eleven's recent emergence in Manahattan, it's probable. (As The Real Deal reported, the chain is planning on opening 100-150 new locations in the five boroughs inthe coming few years.)

Regardless, Prisinzano's dream of another outpost isn't dead despite the CB3/SLA committee's deadlock Monday night -- the full CB3 will hear this whole thing again next week.

There are no easy answers here... Jill puts it into some perspective in the comments about life with another Frank here:

The issue with that space is that it is huge, not that anybody thinks it will become a bar. He also put in for a sidewalk cafe ... I believe the total occupancy quoted was 190. That's a hell of a lot of people to bring to that corner all at the same time, with loads of turnover ("5-10 minute wait for fast food.") Do the math -- potentially 1,000 people coming in there every night if it's truly an in and out kind of place that is successful. Crikeys.

Indeed. I imagine the new suitor for this prime space will remain a hot topic this summer... is there any compromise?

Today's sign of the Apocalypse: 7-Eleven on St. Mark's Place now delivering

Not sure how long that sign has been up... didn't notice it earlier in the week... did not see a delivery sign on the 7-Eleven Bowery location... And what would you have delivered from a 7-Eleven?

7-Eleven now giving its regards to Broadway!

Hey, the 7-Eleven that we first reported on here back in February (and almost the same headline!) on Broadway at East 12th Street opened Friday...

[Silence]

Meanwhile, have you noticed how much trash piles up outside the 7-Eleven on St. Mark's Place?

Anyway, the Axis of 11 is alive and well with four now around here... with more on the way, wouldn't you think?

Avenue A 7-Eleven expected to be completed by yesterday

The gut renovation of the space that previously housed Bar on A and Angels & Kings has entered the 11th month... workers are fitting the address here on Avenue A and East 11th Street for a 7-Eleven, of course...

A quick check yesterday shows that the work is expected to be completed by July 31, 2013, aka yesterday.

At this rate, the crew will have the place ready by July 31, 2014.

However, this photo that Bobby Williams took on Tuesday shows some slight progress...

The 7-Eleven franchise website still shows that the store will be ready for Go-Go Taquitos® action in October. This location is still without an owner.

Reader report: Unshoveled sidewalks in front of the incoming 7-Eleven remain treacherous

Yesterday morning, we noted that the plywood walkway outside the incoming 7-Eleven on Avenue A and East 11th Street was extremely slippery... causing someone to post the above warning note...

Apparently little has changed here.

EV Grieve reader VH McKenzie notes:

"The only building on the block of 11th between A and B that DIDN'T shovel any snow from the pathway in front of their building since Friday ... the site of the incoming 7-Eleven.

"What was a slippery, treacherous sheet of ice is now, thanks to the rain, an impassable small lake. Soon to be a slippery, treacherous sheet of ice again when the temperature drops."

Walking on the other side of the street is really a good idea.
