Celebrating David Amram's 80th birthday

There's a special event Sunday at the Bowery Poetry Club: It's the 80th birthday for classical composer/multiinstrumentalist/author David Amran.

Amram first performed at the original Five Spot with the Charles Mingus Quartet in 1956. He began the first poetry readings with musical accompaniment back in the 1950s, performing with Jack Kerouac and other noted poets. He wrote the music for "Pull My Daisy," along with performing in the film. Amran has also worked with Bob Dylan, Miles Davis, Dizzy Gillespie, Langston Hughes and Nina Simone.

From left: Amran, Allen Ginsberg and Jack Kerouac circa 1959...

Amram will be performing with his quartet, who will be joined by his children, Alana, Adira and Adam, along with other guests. Actor John Ventimiglia of "The Sopranos" will be reading Kerouac with Amram's accompaniment. Admission is $10. The show starts at 8. Find more info here.

[Thanks to Cary Abrams, who's presenting the event, for providing the photos here.]

The Penistrator is letting the fame go to his head

How else to explain this gargantuan snowpenis spotted on 12th Street between First Avenue and Avenue A?

EV Grieve reader Mike, who sent along the photo, notes (correctly), that "I'm sure the proud owner of the car will have no trouble selling the bits of snow he brushes off on eBay!"

Snow bunnies and angels and photographers

So much snow, so many photos... thanks to everyone who sent some along...

Rite Aid finally shoveling their sidewalks

Earlier, a resident who lives and works near the Rite Aid at First Avenue and Fifth Street told us that the drug store never shovels their sidewalks... creating treacherous footing for shoppers...

However, around 5, we got word that Rite Aid dispatched three men to clear the sidewalk...

The first shot is from EV Grieve reader Brian...

And ...

...thought they haven't gotten around to the Fifth Street side just yet...

First Avenue Rite Aid still hasn't shoveled their sidewalk

From the EV Grieve inbox...

I live on 1st Ave & work on 5th St between 1-2. The Rite Aid on the corner of 5th St & 1st, 81 First Ave, has not shoveled their sidewalk — this happens every single time it snows. I've called the store, called the district manager, tried to get a message higher up than that. I've asked the precinct to say something. I'm sick of this & it's obviously a danger.

No Thunder Blizzard coverage is complete without photos of co-eds in their underwear or snowball fights

And you can find more photos and tomfoolery at NYULocal ... snow day photos here...

...monumental snowball fight shots here...

Updated: Oh... these are making the rounds... The shots were sent to other folks as well... Gothamist had the underwear photos earlier. Meanwhile, I think there's something going on in Egypt...

Now that we're done looking at pretty pictures of snow...

... we're hearing about what hell it was getting around via the MTA...

We also heard from people waiting for buses... that never came, even though the Avenues were clear...

A Thunder Blizzard Wonderland

Tompkins Square Park is a post Thunder Blizzard Wonderland. (And I promise to stop using Thunder Blizzard soon enough!)

As these photos from EV Grieve reader Melissa Kipp show...

'Wow'

That was the reaction of a man taking in Tompkins Square Park this morning after the Great Thunder Blizzard of 2011.

Thunder Blizzard damage: Downed awning at Kafana

EV Grieve reader AC notes that the awning at Serbian eatery Kafana (try the Gibanica!) on Avenue C came down during last night's storm...

The Great Thunder Blizzard of 2011

As you may have noticed last night, it snowed. Again. A lot. It's actually nice where I am in Bermuda, so... (That joke never gets old!)

Team coverage starts now! (And more photos to come...)

I love Joe Strummer... but the future is written in terms of tomorrow's weather: More snow.
