2 Cooper Square now the property of Kuwait, sort of

Here's some news via Bloomberg (hi Mike!)... The investment arm of Kuwait’s social-security system — Wafra Investment Advisory Group Inc. — bought 2 Cooper Square, our favorite 144-unit building that includes a rooftop pool, video-game center and private movie-screening room. Per Bloomberg, the sources didn’t disclose the price and asked not to be named because the deal hasn’t been made public.

And as the article notes: "At 2 Cooper Square, available one-bedroom apartments rent for as much as $6,686 a month, according to the property’s website. A two-bedroom unit is listed for $9,335 a month, while a four-bedroom apartment commands $22,000 a month."

Wow. Sounds to me like it's time for a Pool Party!

2 Cooper Square moves back to the east side

In a post last month, EV Grieve reader Stedman alertly noted the new sign outside 2 Cooper Square on the Bowery.... "Are we the West Village now? I didn't get the memo."

So the 2 Cooper power brokers have put up a more accurate sign to reflect their address...

Enjoying some 2 Cooper Square ephemeral

Speaking of 2 Cooper Square... we just came across the old launch party invite and early promo piece for the nearly complete residences at East Fourth Street...

Ah, the early slogan... "Be a part of New York's next Meatpacking District!" (Not to mention "Square was never so cool.")

And the party was at the B Bar... very neighborly!

Meanwhile, I'm still trying to figure out the symbolism of the accompanying artwork...Hmm, a form-fitting dress, a come-hither look. Hey, is she trying to seduce potential renters?!

But seriously, at first glance, I thought she might be holding a 2 Cooper Square cake...

Is 35 Cooper Square really worth saving?

The fight to save 35 Cooper Square continues. As we noted the other day, both Community Board 2 and 3 will discuss stopping demolition of 35 Cooper Square and preserving other Federal houses on the Bowery. Both boards will also discuss nomination of the Bowery to the State and National Register of Historic District. (CB3 passed a resolution on it last night. BoweryBoogie has more here.)

Meanwhile, in an opinion piece published yesterday afternoon, a writer for the Local East Village (the NYU-Times collaboration) wonders why we're fighting it. He admits that he is 22 years old and a resident here for only eight months — and "more privy to this neighborhood’s prolific bar scene than its historic past."

So, from his perspective:

The days of Diane di Prima living upstairs have long since passed. Over time, 35 Cooper Square evolved, from a residential haven for poets and writers, to – like it or not – a cheap watering hole. Over time, 35 Cooper Square’s become little more than an eyesore next to its surroundings. And somewhere over that time, 35 Cooper Square lost its history.

And, moving forward:

The East Village skyline will shift, and shift again. It always has. Who’s to say this is a bad thing, or that tomorrow’s residents won’t include the next di Prima, Hendrix, or Madonna? As East Villagers, it’s our duty to remember the past. But when we reflexively cling to our past, when we use 35 Cooper Square as a scapegoat for fear and uncertainty of an unseen future, we become something altogether different.

2 Cooper Square looking for some "masculine, attractive, intelligent" Clive Owens types with kids — but, lordy, not kids who actually live with them!

Well, if you've been following along, then you seen our little 2 Cooper Square grow up right before eyes on Cooper Square at Fourth Street.... The 15-story rental-retail combo is coming along nicely....

Now! The difficult part. Getting people to move in. So we'd better get some sexy dude types to make us swoon... The casting call has gone out for the "2 Cooper Building Brochure and Web footage" project. An EV Grieve Reader and actor sent along the notice....

And the lead: Male / 40 to 50 / Caucasian

"Masculine, attractive, intelligent, a Javier Bardem or Clive Owen type occupation is not easily guessed, possibly has teenage kids who don't live with them"

They're also requesting submissions for extras from "New Jersey, New York, Puerto Rico."

East Village apartments more expensive than 2 Cooper Square

Yesterday, The Wall Street Journal noted that a three-bedroom apartment in 2 Cooper Square was going for $20,000 a month, which would make these the most most expensive apartments in the neighborhood....

Well, that's not true... just around the way at 6 E. First St. is a new-to-the-market penthouse for $25,000 a month... and here's the adjective-laden listing...

Enjoy the ultimate indoor/outdoor lifestyle from this spectacular 3700SF triplex penthouse loft perched atop a former steel and concrete warehouse located at the crossroads of Soho, Noho, and the burgeoning Bowery district. Connected by a custom cantilevered steel staircase, each level of this amazing home offers something unique and unforgettable. On the first floor, you'll find a massive Living/Dining area bathed in southern light with 11-foot beamed ceilings, exposed brick walls, a wood-burning fireplace, and light from a 50-foot expanse of oversized windows. This fantastic room features an enormous state-of-the-art chef's kitchen with a six-burner Viking range, Subzero refrigerator, built-in Miele espresso/cappuccino maker, and a 50-bottle temperature controlled wine refrigerator. There is a generous-sized Bedroom with en-suite bathroom, and a tasteful powder room for guests. Ascend the stairs to the dramatic sun-blasted second level -- a grand-scaled entertaining space with 13' ceilings, polished concrete floors, custom walnut wet bar, full bathroom + direct access to an incredible wrap terrace ideal for sunbathing, stargazing and dining al fresco. Tucked away at the end of the hallway you'll find the serene Master Bedroom suite replete with fireplace, separate office, large walk-in-closets, and a fabulous sky-lit bathroom with steam shower, oversized jetted soaking tub, bidet, and gorgeous teak and limestone double vanity. Further up the cantilevered staircase is the sun-drenched top level, a breathtaking room with four exposures, spa-quality bathroom, and direct access to yet another phenomenal terrace with unobstructed 360 degree views. Additionally, the residence offers multi-zoned central air-conditioning, radiant heated floors, a separate laundry room and custom lighting on dimmers throughout. Not to mention, there is the prime location in the heart of the vibrant Bowery District, just steps from the city's hottest new restaurants, bars, boutiques and Whole Foods market. Come home to 6 East 1st Street, the ultimate Downtown oasis!

And here are the photos...

Anyway, as for 2 Cooper Square... still no sign of rent details at the 2 Coop site...

[Updated] Through the years with 2 Cooper Square

We first saw the plans for 37 E. Fourth St. back in January 2007... soon, the luxury high-rise became known, like, as 2 Cooper Square here on the corner of the Bowery....

And there was the demolition ... and work on the pit...

In the spring of 2009, when the construction looked ready to start becoming more visible, I decided to start this project... Once either on a Saturday or Sunday morning, I'd stand as close as possible in the same spot and take a picture.... And I did this for, oh, 19 months or so.

[An aside: So this means that I haven't left the city in 19 months? Almost! If I was away then I had someone fill in for me, such as the long-lost Intern of EV Grieve or the Graffiti Friend of EV Grieve (GFOEVG). But pretty much I took most of the photos...]

So, I decided to bring the project to an end... of late there have been few noticeable exterior changes. Sure, we'll get some retail (Hello Duane Reade!) one day, but for now... feel free to watch 2 Cooper Square grow right before your eyes...
