'Mania Days' back on Avenue A today; KATIE HOLMES HIGH ALERT

You may have noticed the fairly large production camped out in various streets around the neighborhood... such as Avenue A and St. Mark's Place...

...where crews were filming a scene yesterday for "Mania Days" at the Odessa Cafe...

...and the crew is back filming today...

We didn't mention this earlier because ... THE MOVIE STARS KATIE HOLMES, the former East Village resident who broke our collective hearts last summer following the dissolution of her fairytale marriage to actor Tom Cruise. (Ah, love is so fickle...)

And we were worried about The Pandemonium this sighting might cause. And you thought you'd never see her here again! (Except for a few weeks ago on Avenue B.)

Anyway, on a more serious note, the movie sounds serious. Per Just Jared:

The 34-year-old actress is reportedly starring in the film about “a manic depressive rapper (Luke Kirby) who gets involved with a manic depressive poet (Holmes) in a passionate affair that results in a pregnancy.”

Spike Lee is a producer; Paul Dalio, a producer at the David Lynch Foundation, makes his directorial debut. (Perhaps worth noting that his father is billionaire Ray Dalio, founder of hedge fund Bridgewater Associates.)

Anyway (again). Pensive Katie! on Avenue A... thinking about Mamani Pizza...

The best East Village bar that no one goes to

[Photo from Tuesday night by Shawn Chittle]

The Odessa Cafe and Bar at 117 Avenue A. Always a little surprised why more people don't drink here. Or not. It's exactly the kind of bar that people tell me they wish we had more of around here in the era of artisanal cocktails and fratty chicken-wing-fueled woo.

Claim: Building that houses Odessa Cafe and Bar on Avenue A has been sold

[Michael Sean Edwards]

Shawn Chittle reports that a source at Odessa claims the building housing the "old" Odessa at 117 Avenue A has been sold for $3.7 million. There are two years left on the Odessa lease, but the hammer may fall sooner than that. Odessa owners are retired and a buyout is possible.

Building that houses Odessa Cafe and Bar for sale on Avenue A

Dave on 7th heard the rumor that the building that houses the Odessa Cafe and Bar at 117 Avenue A is for sale... sure enough, a sign has just arrived...

...this is the (old) cafe/diner space... the newer diner is next door at 119...

Unfortunately, we don't have much information about this listing. The HPNY site is under construction. An Odessa source tells EVG contributor Shawn Chittle that the owner lives in Arizona, and is asking in the $3 million neighborhood for the property. The landlord offered to sell the building to the Odessa proprietors, who own 119 Avenue A as well. They are passing on the sale for now.

The Odessa Cafe currently has three years left on its lease.
