On Thursday afternoon around 3, a man walked into Essex Card Shop, 47 Avenue A between Third Street and Fourth Street, pulled a gun, and demanded the money from the register, according to owner Muhammad Aslam.
Aslam, who was not in the shop then, said the man left with $300.
Police cordoned off the storefront for several hours and took possession of the shop's surveillance footage of the robbery.
Sources tell us that the suspect has pulled similar jobs in the neighborhood. An official description of the suspect has not been released.

This must be so terrifying for Essex Card Shop. They are such good people who have had to deal with so many problems. The arson and now this.

Personally, I'm no fan of surveillance—except in cases like this.
Oh, how terrible! I was there with friends at around 2pm. So I guess a part of that thief's haul was the money one of my friends spent there. For shame! It's extra rotten to rob one of the little guys, one of the good guys who work so hard to serve the neighborhood.
So if the same perp is suspected in other robberies, why still no image or description? If nothing else, it might provide a heads up to the next potential victim. For that matter, why were we only informed this week, that yet another woman had been randomly punched in the face, this one in Union Square, 2 weeks ago? Are the Authorities afraid that publicizing specific crime trends would be an admission of their failures?
Very upsetting! Can anything be done as a deterrent to make that store or others on that block safer?
Is there a good account/app for local crime like this? I’m across the street from Essex and would like to know what the guy looks like, for a start. Nothing on the 9th precinct FB page or Xitter
Yes. Put criminals in jail and make sure they stay there.
Let’s show up for them, buy some things to try to more than compensate, yah?
Just more motivation for businesses to go completely cashless (well, those that can. I guess all the weed shops would still be SOL)
