This morning in inflatables

First, on Astor Place, EVG reader Liz S. shares this photo (subject line: "can't bear it") of the Thomas Burberry Bear ... the bear has been making the rounds showing off the brand's new logo, having been spotted at Xintiandi Taiping Lake, Shanghai.

Meanwhile, on Seventh Street and Avenue B, the Philosophical Zombie notes the always mesmerizing lime green inflatable tube man welcoming back students to the St. Brigid School...

Wow, advertisement in a public owned space trying to pass as art, boo hiss.

Burberry. Yes, because every time I think of the East Village, a few things always come to mind: the hawks flying over Tompkins Square Park, Crusties with pit bulls harassing old people and pregnant women for a dollar, and guys wearing Burberry raincoats in the old XXX theatre on 14th Street.

Jeff Koons saw it coming!

Koons indeed. So sad as noble neolani said, public space and branding. Is there any transparency as to how much money is taken in with all the branding going on at AstorPlace? Walked by yesterday and the kids were going nuts with the photos. Heard one say "be sure to get the name in the picture." Branding, branding, all is branding.

Village Alliance: Am I missing something? Why do we have this huge, ugly balloon advertisement for Burberry in this supposedly public space? I've tried to give you the benefit of the doubt for the past year, but let's face it, this ill-conceived space has all the charm of giant concrete slab. I know, it's high performance concrete with a special drainage system to recycle rainwater. Maybe some trees could have recycled the rainwater. Shame on W. Kelley, D. LaRocco, T. Howell, W. Lewis, the team at XYZ design, and whoever else is to blame for this "gift" to the community.

Really outraged to see the further commercialization and Times Squaring of Astor place. Who is responsible for approving/authorizing the use of Astor place? It’s also very disrespectful to the Alamo sculpture which until recently had an island of its own.

Guess what this BBurry shit goes beyond Astor Place, I was walking on 12th near 2nd ave and spotted a spray paint stencil of the logo on the sidewalk. Will the city fine them for vandalizing our streets? We all know the answer to that. Expect more fashion companies to invade the EV with their lame ass branding tricks. I sure hope nobody vandalizes that teddy bear, they we would look like barbarians not worthy of such a splendid brand.
