Monday's parting shot

As seen on Third Street between Avenue A and Avenue B this afternoon — a familiar citywide winter scene as trash bags pile up atop the snow mounds.

Per a report in THE CITY today:
"Given that the same sanitation workers who pick up trash have been clearing the foot of snow and ice that fell last Sunday, we are about one day behind on collection, and we ask for patience from New Yorkers while we catch up," Department of Sanitation spokesman Josh Goodman told THE CITY. "We are prioritizing trash and compost — the stuff that can smell — over recyclables, but we are picking up all streams, all across the city, just on a slight delay," he added.

First test for new mayor: D or F

This is your mayor people. You voted for him. 10 days later and the city is a mess. Yes, we have seen this in years past, but I've never seen garbage (and snow) piled up like this in the second week. Where is sanitation? No longer cleaning the roads. Mamdani should make them start picking up garbage. One month and he s u c k s.

It was a big snow followed by freezing temperatures - a tough situation. (usually temperature rises and snow melts). DSNY has had a huge job.

That said, it is baffling there has not been more messaging by the Mayor explaining what is happening. And also asking buildings (luxury, office) with staff to help out more.
It would have made sense for the Mayor to do this daily.

I'd like to be optimistic, but 16 people frozen to death doesn't make hopeful.

I have seen DSNY shoveling corners and other areas!!! Had no idea they did this—in all my decades.
And a nice neighbor who shoveled the corner of 11th & A by the closed 7-11.
Thank you!

Yes significant snow followed by consistent freeze has been a difficult situation for the Sanitation Department and not possible to do the clean-up quickly.

It is also true that the Mayor has not done consistent information updates/advisories and I think that is a real problem.

The bike lanes seemed to be cleared pretty quickly while bus stops still problematic (there is different responsibility for bus stops with shelters and bus stops without shelters).
Some bus stops have a clearance path - but not big enough for wheelchairs.

Very sad also to see folks taking advantage - through litter on snow mounds, food trucks parking permanently (24/7) even
though the area is cleared and all other vehicles have moved, pervasive yellow dog pee.....

Truck came to E 3RD ST BETWEEN A AND B today. Mountains of trash everywhere. They came and picked up half of one pile and left. Unbelievable.
