Bellevue Shelter closing; intake shifting to East 3rd Street and the Bowery

ICYMI: This past Thursday, city officials announced plans to close the longtime Bellevue men's shelter on 30th Street by the end of April, citing severe deterioration of the building.

According to Mayor Mamdani's office, the facility — which first opened in 1931 — is in significant disrepair. While officials said there is no immediate danger, the decision to vacate the site was made based on engineering guidance regarding the building's condition.

The shelter currently houses about 250 people, and the city says it will relocate residents to other facilities while maintaining the same number of shelter beds across the system.

The change also affects intake locations for people seeking shelter in Manhattan. Beginning May 1, adult men seeking shelter will be directed to Project Renewal facilities at 8 E. Third St. between Second Avenue and the Bowery, while intake for adult families (without minor children) will move to 333 Bowery between Second Street and Third Street. (The two longtime facitities flank the Bowery Hotel.)
City officials said they will conduct a public information campaign to alert people to the new intake sites. The Department of Homeless Services will also maintain a small presence at the Bellevue location for at least a year to direct anyone arriving there to the new sites, with transportation provided.

Meanwhile, the city says it is working on a long-term redevelopment plan for the Bellevue site.

This is not good news this area already has a regular group of homeless men aggressively panhandling and openly drinking alcohol on the sidewalk by the Bowery and East 3rd Street loitering all day in front of businesses holding doors open for which they demand money. The closure uptown will just bring more mentally unstable homeless men downtown to this neighborhood where we are already oversaturated with them.

You know I regularly volunteer at the NYC Dept. of Homeless Services to do homeless outreach in an attempt to provide assistance to the homeless. But it is not that simple as many of the homeless suffer from severe mental health issues and are not cooperative. Without a long-term professional care facility that can house, clothe, medicate and take care of the needs of homeless properly we are just spinning our wheels.

the money that Trump fleeces in one day could house and feed many of these destitute human beings. for those of you who voted for Trump, take a look at yourself and take responsibility for what is going on in our society right now.

There are many moving parts here. Affordable housing, job training, addiction, mental illness (many times both), the horror & corruption of the shelter system*, etc. Sometimes the only way is to forcefully institutionalize those whose addiction/mental illness that affordable housing alone will not be the answer for but this option has not been funded adequately (or the law amended) since the 70's horror of Willowbrook and Pilgrim State. The recent "turf war" midtown 7-11 shooting/murder of holding the door for money (which is extortion) proves that this is not a victimless crime. Moving the horror from Bellevue to the Bowery is in no way the answer. I don't have the knowledge or the expertise  but it needs an out of the box solution ASAP.

*As I recall a post at the EV Grieve some time ago from a person who was in the shelter system, many of these people have outstanding warrants so they won't enter the system even if it was a lot safer and also some just like the freedom of being,  let's be truthful here, a bum.

Hundreds of millions of dollars are wasted on social programs every year in NYC and this still goes on.

Although my heart goes out to these homeless men from the 3rd St. Shelter (I always have a pocket of $1's to give to whoever asks) I also have a pepper spray in my pocket. There is/was always a very severe crime rate around the Bellevue shelter area - theft and violence. This will now be our reality.I suggest anyone concerned reach out to CB3, Harvey Epstein and the 9th Police Precinct (next monthly meeting on 3/17). According to the NYPost, 250 men will be "relocated" to 3rd Street.

This is a perfect example of waste and officials not thinking things through well. The east 3 site sits on very valuable land. The shelter could be sold and those funds could be used to build a much larger state of the art shelter in other areas of the city that are less expensive. I don’t understand why a shelter like this should be in one of the most expensive parts of the city. If it relocated it could house many more homeless in better facilities in a different part of the city.

Well that makes little to no sense because trump only served 2 terms & 1 in the last 4 yrs & it's still the same problem so I would think that every last president in the last 50 yrs have been pieces of u know the rest on this matter 💯
