Benefit brings art and community together for families affected by ICE

Photos by Stacie Joy

An undisclosed East Village space hosted a benefit show last evening, featuring art, food and entertainment to help raise funds for families affected by ICE enforcement.

Here's a look at the show titled "Ice Out of NYC" ...

"Affected by ICE?"

ICE is not some random medical condition that can target anybody. ICE is a federal law enforcement organization that specifically targets those who are breaking federal laws.

Shouldn't this just be branded as a fundraiser for immigrants without fully documented status? The framing here seems very disingenuous.

You know that 70% or more imprisoned immigrants have NO criminal background. And, American citizens commit the majority of crimes. Check your bias at the door & rely on facts going forward please.

ICE is an agency that regularly captures and detains folks that have not broken any laws, and has used excessive physical force to do so.

If a fridge repairmen routinely kills your dog, you don’t excuse it because the contract was written fairly.

ICE is just one branch of Trump’s dictatorship. Early voting for the midterm elections in New York starts next week. Hopefully people here, and everywhere in America will smarten up and stop voting for republicans.

Being in the country illegally is a crime.

Why none of you demanded Biden abolish ICE?
Also, remember Obama's nickname? It was the deporter-in-chief!

Simply being present in the United States without legal status is a civil violation rather than a criminal offense.

Further: Residing in the U.S. without authorization (such as overstaying a legal visa or remaining after status expires) is a civil infraction. It can result in civil immigration enforcement, fines, and deportation (removal) proceedings, but it does not constitute a federal criminal charge.

Crossing the U.S. border unlawfully — such as entering without inspection by an immigration officer or eluding examination — is a federal criminal misdemeanor for a first offense, punishable by a fine, up to six months in prison, or both.

Returning or attempting to return to the U.S. without authorization after being previously deported, removed, or denied admission is a felony offense carrying harsher prison sentences.

This is a very kind and compassionate thing to do for these families. I am sure they appreciate the support and the kindness. A great reason to make art.

Thank you, this was a kind thing to do. Many NYC-area detainees end up in Delaney Hall in NJ. Pax Christi NJ works with other local orgs to provide support for families of detainees and other visitors there: https://www.instagram.com/paxchristinj/?hl=en

I volunteered there a few times at their radical hospitality tent and when you see the cruelty with which visitors, who have done nothing wrong and can leave, are treated, you can't imagine the cruelty ICE must visit on detainees.

People who don't understand going to a country without any paper work is illegal in mostly every country. Every country has its own ICE and it's probably worst. Let china or Russia get ahold that you enter the country with no paper work... It's really not that hard to comprehend.

All the whataboutism above is disheartening. ICE is simply the untrained, masked militia Trump is using to terrorize, coerce and intimidate communities. Great compassion to those so adversely affected by this heinous misuse of power. Looking forward to the blue wave in November which Trump will undoubtedly try to obfuscate and bring his ICE shock troops in to stop in his usual perverse manner.
