Openings: Table Mercato on 10th Street

Table Mercato, a Boston sandwich shop known for its oversized chicken cutlet sandwiches and long lines, has opened its first location outside Massachusetts at 214 E. 10th St.

The small, counter-service shop between First and Second Avenues specializes in chicken cutlet sandwiches, including a spicy vodka chicken parm and versions served on focaccia with prosciutto, mozzarella, arugula and other toppings. Sandwiches run into the mid-to-upper $20 range.

Owner Jen Royle opened the original Table Mercato in Boston's North End in 2020, where the shop has developed a following for its generously portioned sandwiches.

The East Village outpost debuted on Sept. 26.

The early reviews have been enthusiastic. In an Oct. 7 write-up, The Infatuation called Table Mercato "Boston's best export to New York since Babe Ruth."

Reviewer Will Hartman praised the juicy chicken cutlets, spicy vodka sauce and rosemary-flecked focaccia. He acknowledged the steep prices but noted that the sandwiches are large enough to make two meals out of one.

One thing to keep in mind: There's no seating, so you'll have to take your sandwich elsewhere.

Table Mercato opens at 11 a.m. Tuesday through Sunday, with closing times varying by day.

Nothing says modern day take-out cuisine like waiting in a line down the block for a $26 chicken cutlet sandwich.

As long as you get what you paid for.

How does everyone have the time to stand in line for every trendy new thing? Most of my life I was @work during the day.

This is exactly why I don't patronize businesses on the weekends. There are lines practically everywhere for bagels, pastries, cookies, coffee, and now sandwiches. I wish this new venue the best. But as a real New Yorker, I will not wait in line like that for anything.

I'm not paying more than $20 for a sandwich. I don't care how good ior big it is.

I only wait in line at the post office.

$26 sandwich? NYC is done

With wfh being more common, it's more possible to duck out briefly mid-day to pick up lunch or similar.

I waited on line for Rolling Stones tickets in the 70’s. Well worth it. But these days, seeing these youngsters waiting on lines for dumplings, and bagels, and cookies, jeez. What a boring existence. Bring back Quaaludes and right the ship.

You do you Exterminator!

But no one complains about the large and tasty $24 philly cheesesteak at Danny & Coop

I remember when a $10 sandwich was extreme!

That's why I haven't been.

I’d complain about that. Or, rather, just wouldn’t (and have never) bought one.

A $24 sandwich is ridiculous, no matter what kind of sandwich it is.

Oi, with Manhattan being turned into a giant chain shopping mall, the EV is turning into its food court.
