The PEACE house loses a tree

Update: Per a commenter, a truck's mirror struck the tree...

---

EVG reader Tom shared these photos this evening from outside 166 Avenue A... where the lovely Callery pear tree has fallen over after the recent deluge of rain here between 10th Street and 11th Street...
Longtime East Village-based artist Anton van Dalen lived at 166 Avenue A — the PEACE house — since 1971. He passed away in June 2024 at age 86.

My husband asked the business next door about the tree and an employee said that a truck's side mirror hit the tree and pushed it over.

same thing happened a few years ago in front of my apt on 6th, these Callery pear trees seem to have shallow root systems

we saw the tree within minutes after it fell and took a look at the trunk to figure out if it had been hit by a car or truck. And yes, the trunk was a mess - looked like it had taken a really hard hit.

Idiot drivers are always pulling shit like this. We shouldn't have trucks on Avenue A at all.

Horrible news - that should be a $5,000 fine and a minimum 6 months suspended license

That tree pit looks far too small! Well, now that the tree has come down, we can see a more appropriate NATIVE tree sepcies in its place? Callery Pears are invasive.

Happy to report that NYC Parks removed the tree and tidied up the tree well's blocks by early this morning -- well less than 24 hours after the tree had fallen.

The tree in front of the Rabbit Books doesn’t look too deeply rooted, either
