Bagel Market replacing Bagel Boss on 14th Street

Signage (likely not the final product) is up now for a Bagel Market at 238 E. 14th St. between Second Avenue and Third Avenue.

This will be the fifth NYC outpost for the brand that started in the summer of 2020 ... please chime in the comments if you've tried their bagels.

The business takes over for Bagel Boss, the chainlet that opened a location here in July 2021. They closed several months later in October for, per management, "gas and electric problems" in the building. Bagel Boss never reopened here.  

Bagel Boss has closed on 14th Street

The Bagel Boss at 238 E. 14th St. between Second Avenue and Third Avenue apparently won't be reopening. 

The address has been removed from the Bagel Boss website, and Google lists them as "permanently closed." 

This comes after a temporary closure last October. At the time, BB management told us, "The location is temporarily closed due to gas and electric problems. We hope to open back up before the end of December!" The outpost never reopened, and it eventually showed up on real-estate listings. 

On Saturday, a reader saw the gate open for the first time in months ... and the interior mainly looked cleaned out...

Bagel Boss had only just opened here last July. 

The company, founded in 1975, has 14 locations in NYC and on Long Island. An outpost at 55 E. Houston St. (at Mott) also debuted last year. The store at 263 First Ave. remains in business.

The Bagel Boss at 238 E. 14th St. has not been open in recent days... and passersby note that the display cases are empty — a surprising discovery given that this outpost between Second Avenue and Third Avenue just opened in late July. 

According to a message to EVG from Bagel Boss: "The location is temporarily closed due to gas and electric problems. We hope to open back up before the end of December!"

Hours: Daily from 6 a.m. to, we're told, 4 p.m.-ish.

New Bagel Boss location now with Bagel Boss signage

Bagel Boss signage/branding is up now on 55 E. Houston St. at Mott Street (the former Oddfellows space).

This will be one of two new BBs in the neighborhood (first reported here). There's also one coming to 238 E. 14th St. between Second Avenue and Third Avenue, though no sign of signage there just yet. Both are expected to open this summer.

The owners of Bagel Boss recently discussed their expansion plans with Forbes:

Founder Adam Rosner explains that "At the beginning (of the pandemic), we got our teeth kicked in like the majority of New York City. We innovated, did a lot of shipping and now see a little spark in walking traffic."

Andrew Hazen, a partner, says it opted to expand during a pandemic because "We believe in the future of New York City, and we felt now is the perfect time to invest in it while rents are currently tenant-friendly."

In fact, Rosner asserts that he was able to secure two long-term leases in Manhattan with rents that were 35 percent to 40 percent below previous market levels.

Back on March 22, we reported that Bagel Boss was opening an outpost at 238 E. 14th St. between Second Avenue and Third Avenue... the signage, though, got tangled up, and it was difficult to read passing by... and eventually someone just took it down...

But! As the top photo shows, the signage is securely in place... at the site of old-timer City Gourmet Cafe, which closed during the pandemic.  

And as noted on March 22, there's also a Bagel Boss coming soon to 55 E. Houston St. at Mott Street... in the former Oddfellows space.
