Eyes on 5th Street
ICYMI: This mural, depicting the eyes of Eric Garner, was created by the French artist JR, debuting on Election Day here outside the Standard East Village on Fifth Street at Cooper Square.
Per the hotel's Instagram account, the piece was originally presented at the Millions March in December 2014, and again for the Wide Awakes day global march on Oct. 3.
"The piece is a reminder to keep our eyes open, and continue to fight for racial justice and against police brutality. "
Garner died after being put in a chokehold by now-former NYPD officer Daniel Pantaleo during an arrest on suspicion of selling untaxed cigarettes. The investigation continues into how the NYPD handled the aftermath of Garner's death in July 2014 on Staten Island.

A BLM tribute in Tompkins Square Park
Someone placed 10 tombstone-shaped signs in Tompkins Square Park paying tribute to the unarmed black men and women who died (or were injured) at the hands of police across the country in recent years.
Represented on the east side of the main lawn are Breonna Taylor, Daniel Prude, Trayvon Martin, George Floyd, Eric Garner, Freddie Gray, Tamir Rice, Elijah McClain, Michael Brown and Jacob Blake, who is now paralyzed from the waist down after being shot seven times by a police officer in Kenosha, Wis.

A tribute to Elijah McClain in First Street Green Art Park
New this past week in First Street Green Art Park ... a tribute to Elijah McClain by the Brooklyn-based artist Vincent Ballentine.
As he wrote on Instagram:
#elijahmcclain was a specifically painful story for me. After teaching art for 5 years, he reminds me of all the young men I’ve worked with. To the artsy, sensitive, introverted and magical minds, you have purpose.
Elijah McClain was walking home from a convenience store in Aurora, Colo., carrying a bottle of iced tea last August when three police officers tackled him after receiving a 911 call about a suspicious man in a ski mask. McClain, a 23-year-old massage who taught himself how to play violin and guitar, was put in a stranglehold by police and injected with ketamine. He died six days later.

East Village-based activist curates BLM art displays in Brooklyn
Text and photos by Stacie Joy
East Village artist/activist Holli Porreca and the team at J&M Special Effects collaborated with NYC-based black artists to project their work onto public spaces, including, recently, the Washington Square Arch.

This action, the one I am documenting, is projecting onto two spaces in DUMBO — the walls of St. Ann’s Warehouse and the side of a building near Old Fulton Street and Everit.
Artists selected for this installation are street photographer Kobie Proctor, whose images include several shots from recent Union Square and Astor Place-based peaceful protests. His slideshow is shown on the St. Ann’s Warehouse walls, with permission from the performance space.

A few blocks away, the collage work of Patrick Dougher and graphic illustrations of Kiriakos "Yako 440" Prodis are shown...
The team expects to do more site-based Black Lives Matter installations in the days and weeks to come.
