Burkina (aka Got it 4 cheap™) closes on First Avenue

[Photo of Ahmed Sankara from February 2014 by Stacie Joy]

In early 2014, word spread that hip-hop clothing shop Burkina NYC was closing up shop on First Avenue near East Fourth Street.

However, their $5 fire sale was apparently so successful, owner Ahmed Sankara decided to sign a new lease in February ... and change the name of the store to Got it 4 cheap™ (or Gifu™), specializing in selling hip-hop and NYC-branded clothing for $5.99.

Apparently Sankara couldn't make it work any longer... EVG reader Creature let us know that the shop has been cleared out ... and the space is for rent...

Last month, when EVG correspondent Stacie Joy talked with Burkina owner Ahmed Sankara about his new lease, he mentioned that he may change the name of the store.

He made good on that promise… Burkina is now known as Got it 4 cheap™ (or Gifu™), per this photo by Matt Rosen

The store at 69 First Ave. is now selling its hip-hop and NYC-branded clothing for $5.99. We didn't go into the store, so we can't vouch for everything being $5.99 as the sign promises.

Burkina renews lease for First Avenue

Last month, hip-hop clothing shop Burkina NYC began a going-out-of-business sale at their store on First Avenue near East Fourth Street. We heard that they were set to close after Saturday….

However, EVG correspondent Stacie Joy stopped by on Saturday and talked with owner Ahmed Sankara …

… and learned that their closing/$5 fire sale was so successful, the landlord has asked Burkina to stay … Sankara has agreed to another several years on a lease at an "affordable" price. He also said that he was overwhelmed by the support of the neighborhood … and credits the outreach and support with helping change the landlord's mind about a lease.

Burkina NYC is closing shop on First Avenue

Back in the fall of 2011, hip-hop clothing shop Burkina NYC moved from its home of the last 16 years on East Houston to a new location on First Avenue near East Fourth Street.

EVG reader @DishWithDina passed along word the other day that the shop is closing... and everything seems to be on sale...

Apparently a rent hike isn't to blame for the closure of the store that specializes in NYC-branded T-shirts, hoodies and hats … just a lousy economy.

Burkina's new First Avenue home

BoweryBoogie pointed out a few weeks ago that hip-hop clothing shop Burkina NYC was moving from its home the last 16 years on Houston ... to a new location on First Avenue... Anyway, signs are up at the new space near East Fourth Street.... Careful — you might miss it!
