A free lunch for Engine Company 28, Ladder 11 on 2nd Street yesterday
In recent weeks, San Loco has created grab-n-go burrito grande meal packages for people interested in ordering food for local first responders, hospital staff or nursing home/senior center employees. (Details at this post.)
Yesterday, two local residents bought lunch for the 11 firefighters on duty for the afternoon shift at Engine Company 28, Ladder 11 on Second Street between Avenue B and Avenue C.

Zanetis was a fire marshal and U.S. Air Force Major who was killed in a helicopter crash in Western Iraq one year ago today. He was 37. Zanetis was on leave from the department, where he had been a marshal in the Bureau of Fire Investigation.
After graduating from NYU, he was appointed as a firefighter in 2004, and was assigned to the station house on Second Street. He was promoted to fire marshal in 2013.

Engine 28 and Ladder 11 will be conducting Multi-Unit Drill (aka. MUD), beginning at 11 a.m. (as well as every Saturday morning). During this time, both units may be delayed to emergency responses. The reason being that during Multi-Unit Drill, a Ladder Company (aka. Truck), runs and tests all of the SCOTT Air Masks, the many meters and tools, and extends all portable ladders as well as the aerial ladder (the large ladder on top of the truck). The Engine also runs and tests all SCOTT Air Masks, meters and tools, as well as connecting to a fire hydrant and running the Engine's pumps to make sure they work properly, thereby checking water pressure. Hoses and hose fittings are also tested.
Delays are caused when an alarm is received at the time these various tools, ladders, pumps, fittings are being tested. Since either company may not respond without their full complement of equipment (they would be ineffective without them), they must be put back on the rig. All efforts are made to test one piece of equipment at a time and place it back on the rig to lessen the degree of delayed response.

Possible delay in emergency response this afternoon and tomorrow from Engine 28 and Ladder 11
We'll periodically have information on local fire company activities, including when they are closed for periods of time... particularly the FDNY’s Engine 28 and Ladder 11 — the two fire companies quartered at 222 E. Second St.
Engine 28 will be conducting Building Inspection this afternoon from 1-4 ... as well as every Friday afternoon. Building Inspection may cause delays in response because parts of their Buidling Inspection District are not in their 1st, 2nd or 3rd due emergency response area.
And tomorrow:
Engine 28 and Ladder 11 will be conducting Multi-Unit Drill (aka. MUD), beginning at 11 a.m. (as well as every Saturday morning). During this time, both units may be delayed to emergency responses. And who should you call about fire-related complaints? The number for Complaints at FDNY's 9 Metrotech Center in Brooklyn is 718-999-1012. They are usually only open during business hours. If they are closed and it is something they feel warrants immediate attention, then call 911.

Possible delay in emergency responses this afternoon from Ladder 11
We'll periodically have information on local fire company activities, including when they are closed for periods of time... particularly the FDNY’s Engine 28 and Ladder 11 — the two fire companies quartered at 222 E. Second St.
Ladder 11 will be conducting Building Inspection this afternoon from 1 to 4, as well as every Thursday afternoon. Building Inspection may cause delays in response because parts of their Buidling Inspection District are not in their 1st, 2nd or 3rd due emergency response area.
Firefighters may also be delayed since Building Inspection takes them to the far reaches of the building, including the roofs and the basements. The alarm is sent via Fire Dept. radio to the engine/ladder in the street. The Chauffer, who is the only firefighter who waits in the engine/ladder for this expressed purpose, then alerts the other firefighters by handheld radio. They then must make their way off the roof/out of the basement/upper floor etc. to the location of the engine/ladder (Many times this could be around the corner as to not block side streets). At this time, the firefighters must then don their Personal Protective Equipment (Bunker Gear), enter the rig and then may proceed to the alarm.

After battling two blazes this morning, Ladder 11 back in service
Members of FDNY’s Engine 28 and Ladder 11 — the two fire companies quartered at 222 E. Second St. — helped battle the two two-alarm fires early this morning. The companies were briefly Out Of Service from these fires to clean tools and gear, as well as to wait for firefighters to replace the members of E-28 and L-11 who were injured at the Sixth Street fire.
As of 10:30 a.m., Ladder 11 is back in service.
Moving forward, we'll have information on local fire company activities, including when they are closed for periods of time.
