Sandwicherie New York yumming soon in former Fresh & Co. space on 4th Avenue

The abundant "yumming soon" soon signage is up on the southeast corner of Fourth Avenue and 13th Street ... where Sandwicherie New York is opening an outpost..

Here's more about them via their Facebook description:

Our aim is to give our customers a natural, healthy and vibrant lifestyle ... we strive to build our small family owned business one SANDWICH(erie) at a time.

We are committed to serving you fresh and healthy meals, coupled with a pleasant shopping experience and premium service. Operated by a seasoned and very talented team that consistently puts out chef-inspired or made to order salads and sandwiches that are packed with great flavor. Eye popping New York breakfasts and lunches that include healthy quinoa and wild rice bowls, fresh-pressed juices and a large assortment of bakery and desserts.

Kind of sounds like the previous tenant here, Fresh & Co., which closed at the end of December.

This will be the second NYC location for Sandwicherie ... joining the outpost on 42nd Street near Grand Central. You can find their menu offerings with meat and vegan options here.

This will also be a competitive corridor for sandwiches. Make Sandwich, which "serves uniquely classic sandwiches and quality make-your-own ingredients with NYC hustle," opened several storefronts to the north on Jan. 9.

Sad Pie Face?

The Pie Face on Fourth Avenue and East 13th Street was suspiciously not open this past weekend.

Several tipsters said the place had closed for good. A look inside yesterday showed a whole lot of inactivity. (Eater noted this yesterday.)

This outlet of the Australian chain, which specializes in mini meat pies with smiley faces on them, opened here last fall after extensive renovations of the former Brothers Deli.

Desi Shack signage arrives on Fourth Avenue

The second Manhattan location of Desi Shack is coming soon to Fourth Avenue at East 13th Street. The signage appeared late last week.

Here's their description: "Desi Shack is a casual restaurant that offers New Yorkers a new take on Indian and Pakistani food. Our simple menu offers endless choices. We serve fresh grilled food, giving you the option to customize your meal the way you want it."

And here's what New York magazine had to say about Desi Shack after its Lexington Avenue shop opened in the fall of 2011: "Truly authentic it’s not, but quick, satisfying, and cheap is good enough."

The Shack is located next to the incoming Liquiteria

The spaces previously housed a Blimpie and Young Chow.

Here comes the protected 4th Avenue bike lane

On Friday, workers started putting down the green for the new protected bike lane…

… that will stretch from Lafayette and Prince Street up Fourth Avenue to East 12th Street.

And here is a look at the lane on Lafayette at Bond…

The new bike path will not remove any car lanes, but instead narrows them on Fourth/Lafayette.

Report: More support for protected bike lane on Lafayette Street/Fourth Avenue

A quick note from the coverage that Streetsblog provided from last Thursday night's Community Board 2 meeting:

In a unanimous 9-0 vote last night, Manhattan Community Board 2′s transportation committee endorsed a DOT plan to upgrade a buffered bike lane on Lafayette Street and Fourth Avenue to a parking-protected lane, complete with new pedestrian islands, car lanes of an appropriate width for the city, and improved signal timing for pedestrians. The plan now moves to CB 2′s full board meeting on March 20.

The protected lane would run from Prince Street up to East 12th Street. The proposal would not remove any car lanes, but instead narrows them on the avenues, per Streetsblog.

Find a PDF of the proposal here. Read the whole Streetsblog post here.

How are we feeling about protected bike lanes these days? Anyone? Comments?

Pie Face shows its, uh, face on Fourth Avenue

[Bobby Williams]

The sign for the latest NYC location of Pie Face went up on Saturday afternoon at Fourth Avenue and East 13th Street...

The Australian bakery reportedly opens today.

Per DNAinfo:

The 24-hour bakery [offers] a full menu of flaky pies stuffed with fillings like mince meat, Philly cheesesteak and tandoori vegetable.

The space was previously home to Brothers Deli. A tipster originally told us that the Pie Face was opening next door at the former Dryden Gallery ... and that a Juice Generation was opening on the corner. We'll see if we can get this sorted out...

Coming and going on Fourth Avenue

First, let's look at the retail space on the southeast corner of Fourth Avenue and East 13th Street. Word is the former Brothers Deli space will become a Juice Generation, which has 11 locations in Manhattan. Construction crews have gutted the space, so there's still work to get it juice ready.

And next door, at the former Dryden Gallery, the word here among the locals is that a Pie Face pizzeria is opening here. (We heard a pizza rumor going back to last October. Well, different kind of pie.)

Moving up to the northeast corner... reliable sources tell us that the Blimpie sub shop and the Young Chow Restaurant are goners. The two spaces will be combined for an asking rent of $36,000. (After all, you need nice things for that new hotel across the way.)

True to that, Young Chow has already closed.

If you're a fan, then you're in luck — Young Chow is moving. Somewhere, per the dueling signs on the gate.

We'll go with 96 Third Ave., where there's this sign...

No word on a closing date for Blimpie.

Photo Tech leaving East 13th Street

Photo Tech Repair Service is moving away from its home on East 13th Street between Third Avenue and Fourth Avenue ... they'll be merging with their West 34th Street location... And the space is for lease.

Interesting to see what happens along here at the southeast corner of Fourth Avenue and East 13th Street where Brothers Deli and Dryden Gallery cleared out... Construction has picked up again...

Heard a few rumors of a restaurant for the corner spot... Anyway, the listing looked like this...

Street fair! Street fair! Street fair!

Well! Just when you thought it was going to be another boring Saturday in dreary old Manhattan... it's time for The East Village Visiting Neighbors Festival on Fourth Avenue, starting at East 14th Street ...

Vendors were just setting up when we passed through on our inspection... you will find the usual farm-to-table calzones... and handcrafted hair scrunchies...

Brothers Deli closing this week on Fourth Avenue

In April, a retail listing went live for the storefronts housing the Dryden Gallery and Brothers Deli on Fourth Avenue and East 13th Street ... (The Dryden moved to another block in August.)

Then, in October, a well-placed tipster on the block told us that that the Dryden space would soon house a pizzeria ... and the Brothers Deli was closing at the end of November. "Negotiations are ongoing but it is almost certainly to become a restaurant," the tipster said at the time.

The going-out-of-business signs went up several days ago at Brothers...

... where everything is on sale — except for cigars and cigarettes...

Meanwhile, across the street, the Hyatt Union Square is expected to open on Jan. 2.

Reader report: Car-motorcycle accident on Fourth Avenue at East 13th Street

EVG reader Lauren passes along this photo and information from last night around 11 ... where there was a car-motorcycle accident on Fourth Avenue at East 13th Street. "Not sure how the person on the ground is ... the fireman was just sitting there holding her hand."

We'll see if we can get an update later...

Street fair! Street fair! Street fair!

Oh, thank fucking god goodness we have one more of these before the summer officially ends! On Fourth Avenue from East 14th Street down to New York Harbor Astor Place.

Street fair highlights include Squeeze Lemonade pushcart races...

... and a pig holding his entrails sausage.

Bonus towing coverage...

...the owner even zipped up before the NYPD rep had the car up...

...got towed anyway...

Updated: Ah! In the comments, Pinhead says there's one tomorrow too on Broadway between Waverly and 14th...

Glaze is now open on Fourth Avenue

Back in March, we reported that a second outpost of the Glaze Teriyaki Grill is opening here on Fourth Avenue near 13th Street... (the flagship location is at Lexington near 54th Street...) The website describes the food as "Seattle-Style Teriyaki."

Anyway, it opened Friday. We hear good things about the food. Gothamist has more on the menu and stuff here.

...and Glaze kept the iconic "walk ins welcome" lettering on the front out of homage to the previous tenant, Ibiza Salon... (OK, OK — it's not iconic... but i thought it was funny...)

Anyway, here's a time-lapse video of the renovation...

Utrecht is moving away from Fourth Avenue

As you may have noticed, Utrecht opened a new store on East 13th Street between University and Fifth Avenue earlier in the summer...

Now, it appears that the longtime arts supply store will be leaving its Fourth Avenue home... store for rent lease have gone up...

Not much info, such as price, on the listing... though it does note that "venting is possible" ...

Meanwhile, this will make the second large storefront available for rent along Fourth Avenue ... Dryden Gallery recently moved to a new location on East 12th Street...

Dryden Gallery moves away from Fourth Avenue

Back in April, we noted that the retail space on the southeast corner of Fourth Avenue and East 13th Street — currently home to Brothers Deli and Dryden Gallery — is for lease...

Anyway, just noting that Dryden has moved out of its space ...

... just over to East 12th Street between Broadway and University...

RKF still has the listing on its website ... so nothing must be imminent here just yet...

Perhaps when the Hyatt Union Square finally opens across the street...

Southeast corner of Fourth Avenue and East 13th Street is up for grabs

The retail space on the southeast corner of Fourth Avenue and East 13th Street — currently home to Brothers Deli and Dryden Gallery — is for lease...

...which might be why Brothers never fixed their sign...

Here's the listing at RKF ... looks as if they're pushing for retail...

The listing includes the currently vacant space behind the deli on 13th Street...

Meanwhile, the new Hyatt Union Square will be opening across the street one of these days...
