Hanoi Soup Shop debuts today on St. Mark's Place

Hanoi Soup Shop opens today at 115 St. Mark's Place between Avenue A and First Avenue. This is the quick-serve cafe extension of Hanoi House, the Vietnamese restaurant a storefront away on the block.

Per a preview at Eater:

The main attraction will be pho, available in chicken, beef, or vegetarian varieties, plus other dishes like papaya and watercress salad, summer rolls, and banh mi. Rotating specials will include bun bo Hue, a breakfast soup from the port city of Hue, and a stew lamb rib kho, a stew. Fruit shakes and Hanoi’s famous egg coffee will also be on tap.

Starting hours are 11:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. The owners say they plan to expand those hours in the future.

No. 115 last hosted the pop-up shop Mr. Bing. The previous tenant, Water Witch Mercantile, closed at the end of 2016 after just two months in business. Past tenants also include Box Kite Coffee and the Tuck Shop.

And this isn't the end of Hanoi House's expansion plans. As we first reported last month, the owners plan to take over the former Five Tacos space between these two storefronts to serve as a bar area for patrons waiting for a table at the restaurant. Read more about the plans here.

CB3 OK'd a new liquor license for this space last month.

Hanoi House expanding on St. Mark's Place

For starters, the Hanoi Soup Shop signage is now up at 115 St. Mark's Place between Avenue A and First Avenue.

As Eater first reported in late December, the operators of the Vietnamese restaurant Hanoi House at 119 St. Mark's are opening a soup-centric cafe in this spot. (Past tenants at No. 115 include the pop-up shop Mr. Bing, Water Witch Mercantile, Box Kite Coffee and the Tuck Shop.)

Meanwhile, they also plan to expand into the empty storefront next door to their current restaurant ... (this space was previously Five Tacos). The owners are on tonight's CB3-SLA docket for a liquor license for this space... the CB3 notice states the alteration here will include a new entrance, host desk, bar and waiting area...

According to their plan via the online questionnaire at CB3's website, the building's landlord will open the walls between the two spaces so that patrons can enter the restaurant from the waiting area. The landlord will "create a new residential corridor on the west side of the expanded space."

That expanded space will include an eight-seat bar and six-seat dining area.

Hanoi House opened in January 2017. Based on the expansion, business must be pretty good... Eater noted "it soon became packed for its hip vibes and uncompromising flavors" ...

Hanoi Soup Shop's on for 115 St. Mark's Place

The owners of Hanoi House at 119 St. Mark's Place have designs on opening a soup-centric cafe a few storefronts away here between Avenue A and First Avenue.

Eater brings the news of the incoming Hanoi Soup Shop at 115 St. Mark's Place:

It will be a far more casual affair than their original restaurant, with sandwiches, coffee, and of course, pho. Hanoi House’s well-known, funky and fragrant pho bac — beef-based pho, here with oxtail — will be an option, as will pork terrine banh mi (banh mi cha lua) and Hoi An chicken over rice. Here, a chicken and vegan pho will also be available. Unlike Hanoi House, Soup Shop will be open during the day instead of just for dinner. It’s also about half the size, with counter seating, takeout, and delivery.

No. 115 last hosted the pop-up shop Mr. Bing... The previous tenant, Water Witch Mercantile, closed at the end of 2016 after just two months in business. Past tenants included Box Kite Coffee and the Tuck Shop.
