Jiang's Kitchen is in soft-open mode on St. Mark's Place

Photos by Steven

Jiang's Kitchen debuted back on Thursday here at 65 St. Mark's Place just west of First Avenue.

As we've been reporting, this is from the team behind the now-closed Jiang Diner on Fifth Street.

A look at the menu shows some of the favorites from that establishment, including the big-plate chicken
Jiang's Kitchen is in soft-opening mode through Nov. 24. (There's an introductory 15-percent-off deal too.) They are open daily from 5-10 p.m. Find a menu and delivery options here.

Jules Bistro closed here during the pandemic after 27 years in business.

Jiang's Kitchen signage-canopy combo arrives on St. Mark's Place

The signage-canopy combo arrived the other day for Jiang's Kitchen at 65 St. Mark's Place between First Avenue and Second Avenue (thanks to Steven for these photos)...
As we mentioned last month, Tao An, the owner of the now-closed Jiang Diner (and Hot Kitchen) is behind this new venture — previously billed as Jiang Kitchen — at the former home of Jules Bistro (1993-2020).

An had previously received administrative approval via CB3 for a beer-wine license for the address. According to the questionnaire posted on the CB3 website, Jiang's Kitchen will have 15 tables to accommodate 60 guests. Although the restaurant will serve beer and wine with meals, there is no bar for guests inside the space. An opening date has not yet been announced.

Jiang Diner opened on Fifth Street between First Avenue and Second Avenue opened in the spring of 2019 and drew praise for its big-plate chicken and Xinjiang-styled Northwestern Chinese food. The restaurant closed for a summer break in late July and never reopened.

An also operated Hot Kitchen, a Sichuan restaurant, at 104 Second Ave. at Sixth Street starting in 2011. (Jiang Diner also briefly moved into this space, which is now for rent.)

Jules Bistro, a classy spot that offered French cuisine and live jazz, never reopened after the March 2020 PAUSE. Workers cleaned out the space in September 2020.

Activity at the former Jules Bistro on St. Mark's Place

Interior renovations continue at 65 St. Mark's Place, the former Jules Bistro between First Avenue and Second Avenue...
We haven't heard just yet what might be coming to this space (the address hasn't shown up on the CB3-SLA docket for a new liquor license).

Jules never reopened after the March 2020 PAUSE. Workers cleaned out the space last September.

The casual French spot, which opened in 1993, offered free live jazz every night... and with its French film posters on the walls and red leather booths, always offered a throwback getaway on St. Mark's Place.

Well-regarded restaurateur Georges (Café Noir, Bar Tabac, Cercle Rouge) Forgeois said that there wasn't really much room for outdoor dining here and running the place with 25-percent indoor capacity at the time last fall wasn't going to cut it.

We're curious to see what might be taking over this high-profile space...

(Thanks to Steven for the pics yesterday!)

Take home something from the former Jules Bistro on St. Mark's Place

Updated 2:23 p.m.: Everything is gone...

Workers are cleaning out the former Jules Bistro at 65 St. Mark's Place between First Avenue and Second Avenue ... and placing dishes and other things out front for the taking...
The 27-year-old bistro didn't reopen after the PAUSE went into effect in March 2020... ownership made the closing official in September.

Thanks to Steven for the photos!

Jules Bistro will not be reopening on St. Mark's Place

Jules Bistro, the casual French spot at 65 St. Mark's Place between First Avenue and Second Avenue, will not be reopening coming out of the COVID-19 PAUSE.

Workers were packing up the space yesterday, as EVG regular Lola Sáenz reports.

Jules, which opened in 1993, offered free live jazz every night... and with its French film posters on the walls and red leather booths, always offered a throwback getaway on St. Mark's Place... Well-regarded restaurateur Georges (Café Noir, Bar Tabac, Cercle Rouge) Forgeois said that there wasn't really much room for outdoor dining here and running the place with 25-percent indoor capacity starting on Sept. 30 wasn't going to cut it.

RIP Jules.
