Suki is moving to a larger space around the corner

Suki, the six-seat Japanese curry shop at 86 E. Seventh St. just west of First Avenue, is moving to a new, larger space around the corner at 111 First Ave.

Following renovations, chef Kelly Cho will serve her Japanese-style curries from the former Maharlika space between Sixth Street and Seventh Street...





Here's part of Suki's announcement on Instagram:

We are really excited to say that Suki will soon expand & still live in East Village! It is truly still unbelievable the amount of love we received in the 6 seater restaurant! We will still be serving the same high quality food as usual so do not worry!

P.S. We thank our loyal customers who wished for more seats.

Suki opened in July 2018 and received favorable notices in the Times and via Michelin.

Maharlika closes after 8 years of serving Filipino cuisine on 1st Avenue

EVG reader Trevor J. shares the news that Maharlika has shut down on First Avenue between Sixth Street and Seventh Street.

The note on the door that he discovered thanks customers for their patronage ... followed by: "Unfortunately, we have made the decision to close Maharlika's doors for service as of Dec. 8, 2019."

However, despite the Dec. 8 date, the restaurant was open for an encore presentation last night...

Maharlika's creative team, which includes founder Nicole Ponseca and executive chef Miguel Trinidad, will continue on with Jeepney, their more casual counterpart a few blocks to the north on First Avenue.

Maharlika opened in August 2011, in space that had been several restaurants previously, including Absinthe, Lautrec Bistro and Lingua.

[Updated] Maharlika is closed for now

Several readers have pointed out that Maharlika, the well-regarded Filipino restaurant on First Avenue at East Seventh Street, has been closed the past few days.

A sign on the door states: "Due to building complications, the Maharlika kitchen is not able to operate."



Would-be diners are directed to Jeepney, Maharlika's other restaurant a few blocks up First Avenue.

The sign coincides with a DOH closure dated Thursday…



According to the DOH, there were 41 violation points, including for evidence of various critters.

Updated: Maharlika reopened on Dec. 11.

[Updated] DOH temporarily closes Maharlika on First Avenue; bonus gas leak

EVG reader AC points out that Maharlika, the Filipino restaurant on First Avenue near East Seventh Street, is temporarily closed. Per the DOH, they had 63 violation points on an inspection dated Jan. 29 ...

Interestingly enough, despite the telltale DOH stickers, signs on the door point to a "gas leak."

Filipino pop-up restaurant Maharlika now open on First Avenue

As of last Friday, Filipino pop-up restaurant Maharlika is now in "soft open" mode here at 111 First Ave. near Seventh Street...

Grub Street first brought news of this arrival back on July 22 ... Co-founder Nicole Ponseca previously oversaw a Maharlika brunch pop-up inside of Resto Leon on East 12th Street...

Anyway! Here's a look at part of the menu...

And, to fit into the current East Village climate, there's a happy hour....

This is the second Filipino restaurant to debut on First Avenue this year ... Sa Aming Nayon opened in the former Wai? Cafe space in June.

And this is the third or so eatery to take this space in the last few years... there was Absinthe, Lautrec Bistro and Lingua ...
