[Updated] Maharlika is closed for now

Several readers have pointed out that Maharlika, the well-regarded Filipino restaurant on First Avenue at East Seventh Street, has been closed the past few days.

A sign on the door states: "Due to building complications, the Maharlika kitchen is not able to operate."

Would-be diners are directed to Jeepney, Maharlika's other restaurant a few blocks up First Avenue.

The sign coincides with a DOH closure dated Thursday…

According to the DOH, there were 41 violation points, including for evidence of various critters.

Updated: Maharlika reopened on Dec. 11.

This is like the third time they were shut down by the DOH in just a span of 1 year. Not a good sign!!! Might as well stay away.

I am pretty much convinced there are rats in the kitchen of every East Village restaurant. How could there not be? The neighborhood is infested with them, and the restaurants are all in old buildings with plenty of ways for the pests to infiltrate. If we knew how widespread the problem likely is, none of us would go out to eat!

Don't know if this comment is gonna go through but here it is.

Firstly, Maharlika is overhyped pretentious Filipino restaurant. This is just a novelty to those with an Asian fetish, similar to those that's visit Thailand for waht that country offers to foreigners. The only thing Philippine authentic about this place is if this was a an eatery in a shantytown in the Philippines, i.e. the presence of the vermins in a shantytown are as real and authentic as the vermins here.

Secondly, the Marcos family grazes the menu covers. This is a dictator that plundered the Philippines economy, executed those that opposed him, and stole the international, mostly American, funds that should be helping the Filipino people, and Maharlika is unapolegetic for its cover, if anything, proud of it. And some of the menu items esp. the cocktails are named after the Marcos' cronies; the ones that plundered the Philippines economy. The very wealthy Filipinos are wealthy because of this while the poor becomes poorer.

Wouldn't be surprised if this restaurant was financed by one of the cornies or if they are a crony themselves. This is like if an Egyptian restaurant opened celebrating Mubarak and his cohorts. Mubarak on the cover. Maharlika should know better since gaba just bit them in their puwet.

The should make a Death to Aladeen Restaurant.

Anyway, I never understood with the high rents, how one family can open two restaurants on the same Ave, like a 6min walk from each other. And how do they make money if they're both the same food?

Yes, rats are everywhere. They're in my building too. Everything around here was built around 1895, so there rats are living between the walls for sure.
