1st DF Mavens dairy-free dessert shop opens Friday

Just 14 months after announcing their coming-soon status, the DF Mavens shop opens Friday on Second Avenue at St. Mark's Place...

Their dairy-free desserts have been available in various retail outlets ... though this is their first dedicated NYC storefront.

We also spotting Krazy Kale chips while window shopping...

Nice timing, the first blizzard should arrive any day now.

I'll make sure to not be there.

I am excited to see them opening in the neighborhood! For those of us who skip ice cream due to dairy intolerance or animal ethics, this brand is a great choice. Even if you aren't Vegan you should give it a try!

So much welcoming x-mas comment cheer today for DF Mavens! I can't say I understand the seeming animosity toward this place. For people who (for whatever health reasons) can't enjoy regular ice cream, this coming vegan and gluten-free ice cream shop will be welcomed. Currently the only other all-vegan ice cream purveyor is the great Blythe Ann's on 6th between A and B. But that shop's hours of operation are limited, so this will be a great new option. Just hoping it isn't ruined by its location on St. Mark's.

You vegan ice cream intolerant whatever won't bother going there anyway. This is a dumb concept and landlord don't care when the spot turns around once again for the next sucker how is willing to shell out $10k+/month...what a waste - again

Anon 6:57: The animosity comes from the decreasing number of places to get a bite to eat that aren't overly expensive and overly-fussy, and an increasing number of places are... well... exactly that: fussy and expensive.

The animosity comes from the fact that regular normal relatively inexpensive places are dying in this town. Its all special and fancy and gourmet. As hard as it is to believe this used to be a more blue collar working class town. I don't recall people having all these food issues in this past. Are these new issues? I guess only upscale bro types have food allergies/issues. I don't recall people having those back in the day when some of us grew up with very little. Nobody seemed to be allergic to any kind of food. First world rich person problems. This place is the embodiment of everything wrong with the EV.

I really can't see this place holding on for long, even with the Saudi oil money that's backing it. The rent has to be insanely high.

What planet are you living on? Peanut allergies are on the increase, and an increasing number of people are choosing to avoid dairy because of the health problems it causes. Food choices are often in direct response to health concerns.

In case you hadn't noticed, there are plenty of places in the neighborhood to buy fro-yo in a hoof; there are far fewer places you can get dairy-free treats.

That said, this place may not hang on for long before the space gets "flipped," but I for one appreciate being able to go order food at a place where I can actually get more than "a toothpick, a napkin, and a glass of water," as my dad used to say.

Scuba-I grew up in Queens in the 70s. Nobody was allergic to any food. We barely got by. I live in the real world not the brotopia that the EV has become.

While many Americans have food allergies, the majority of the rest of the world is allergic to starvation. Merry Christmas!

Are you fucking kidding me? The EV used to be wall-to-wall vegetarians. Now it's a bunch of baconated drunks.

This place is a bit upscale for my tastes and vegan-ally speaking, ice cream is not really important to me. But it's not a goddamn pudding restaurant and the company has some level of success already; this is to be expected.

Funny how many responses an honest comment gets. Rich Saudis financing a spot for bros with food allergies. If you don't think this is bad than you are part of the problem. Did you learn about food allergies in prep school or from your nanny? NY Cares can't collect enough jackets but you love your special desserts. Disgraceful.

"Currently the only other all-vegan ice cream purveyor..."

lol, 1 isn't enough?

the problem people have with this place is simple: the ratio of "number of occasions that an average EV resident desires to purchase vegan ice cream" to "number of available retail spaces in the EV" is infinitesimally small.
