Nobletree Coffee is the next tenant for 37 St. Mark's Place and 2nd Avenue

Also, breaking!

Signage is in progress this afternoon at the long-empty storefront that is 37 St. Mark's Place (at Second Avenue).

Workers are putting in the Nobletree Coffee signage...

We mentioned last week that coffee of some sort was (probably) coming here.

The Brooklyn-based Nobletree has several locations in NYC, including in the Dekalb Market Hall and Westfield World Trade Center.

Here's a small part for their about:

Nobletree’s name reflects the coffee tree’s alluring history and is a nod of respect to those who first transported coffee trees from their native home in Ethiopia to the tropics of the Atlantic. Today, Nobletree Coffee continues that tradition of respect by valuing everyone involved in growing, roasting, and preparing coffee as team members united in working toward the common goal of delivering a superior product to the most discerning consumers.

Nobletree is also affiliated somehow with the previous tenant, DF Mavens, the vegan ice cream shop that closed in January 2016 after opening in December 2014. (The coming soon signage arrived in October 2013.)

Before the Mavens, the prime corner space was the cafe Eastside Bakery (.net?). And there was Roastown Coffee before that. And the Gap a long time ago.

Coffee probably for St. Mark's and 2nd Avenue, and the rent is still due at the former DF Mavens

EVG DF Mavens correspondent Steven continues to monitor the former DF Mavens space on Second Avenue at St. Mark's Place.

And in recent interior revelations ... we have the makings of coffee ...

The contractors here say they don't know who the new tenant is.

Meanwhile, as we've seen in recent years, another past-due rent notice arrived on the door late last week...

Activity in the former DF Mavens space

EVG DF Mavens correspondent Steven spotted workers inside the former DF Mavens space this morning on Second Avenue at St. Mark's Place...

Workers weren't too chatty about what they were working on ... perhaps a new tenant is taking over this prime retail spot?

DF Mavens, the vegan ice cream shop, closed in January 2016 after two years in business... and the storefront has remained tenant free and for-lease-sign free since then.

Every so often, a past-due rent notice arrives on the door.

Once again, the rent is past due at the long-empty DF Mavens space

There's another notice "Demanding Payment of Rent" taped to the front door of the long-empty DF Mavens storefront on Second Avenue and St. Mark's Place....

The owners of the vegan ice cream shop owe the January and February rent ($25k plus change) and some taxes for a $54,111.85 total.

DFM closed in January 2016 after two years in business on this northwest corner.

The storefront has sat empty these past two years without even a for rent sign in sight.

Remembering Breakfast at DF Mavens

Left up for grabs this afternoon outside the former DF Mavens space on St. Mark's Place and Second Avenue...

Steven, who took these photos, said that the Audrey Hepburn print was claimed fairly quickly... can't say the same thing for the retail space.

DF Mavens, the vegan ice cream shop, closed nearly two years ago to the date... and the prime corner storefront has remained tenant free since then...

The rent is due at the former DF Mavens

DF Mavens, the vegan ice cream shop and cafe on the northwest corner of Second Avenue and St. Mark's Place, closed in January 2016.

Apparently the owners are still are the books for the rent, which is past due, according to the notice "Demanding Payment of Rent" taped to the front door early last week...

The total due is $53,660.27, which includes the nearly $25k monthly rent for both August and September.

The document shows that the lease goes back to August 2013 — roughly 16 months before DF Mavens opened their first retail space here on Dec. 26, 2014.

To date, I have not seen any for rent signs for this space. Guess that there isn't any rush to lease the prime storefront as long as the former tenant is still paying rent.

The rent is due at DF Mavens

[Photo by Steven from Jan. 30]

As we first reported, DF Mavens, the vegan ice cream shop and cafe on the northwest corner of Second Avenue and St. Mark's Place, closed for good late last month.

Yesterday, the landlord attached a rent-due notice on the door...

Per the paperwork, the February rent is $23,765.10.

And it appears the lease goes back to August 2013.

The coming soon signage arrived in October 2013 ... but the storefront wasn't ready for business until Dec. 26, 2014, DFM's opening day. (And is the day after Christmas the best day to open a business?)

Several readers have been curious why the build-out took so long, especially since the space was previously home to another cafe, Eastside Bakery (.net?). So it wasn't as if workers had to renovate a gutted space or some far-flung business...

[Updated] DF Mavens has closed (for now) on 2nd Avenue and St. Mark's Place

Well, it's apparently lights out now for DF Mavens, the vegan ice cream shop and cafe on the northwest corner of Second Avenue and St. Mark's Place.

The shop is dark... and there is a sign...

However, according to a DFM Facebook post this afternoon: "Our St. Marks location is closed until further notice. We are still available at retail locations."

Not sure what "until further notice" means here.

Anyway, the shop was open for business yesterday.

DF Mavens opened their first retail space here on Dec. 26, 2014. The storefront was previously home to Eastside Bakery (.net?)

And this corner continues to be a tough spot for any retail establishment. Maybe it's time to bring back the Gap!

Updated 8:56 p.m.

In a tweet, DFM said "don't fret," that they were working on the situation...

1st DF Mavens dairy-free dessert shop opens Friday

Just 14 months after announcing their coming-soon status, the DF Mavens shop opens Friday on Second Avenue at St. Mark's Place...

Their dairy-free desserts have been available in various retail outlets ... though this is their first dedicated NYC storefront.

We also spotting Krazy Kale chips while window shopping...

Miracles! The DF Mavens storefront finally — REVEALED

Well! After a seemingly really long time, the plywood came down yesterday on the northwest corner of Second Avenue and St. Mark's Place... home one of these days to vegan ice cream shop DF Mavens ...

We first reported on their arrival back in October 2013. It's a bit of a mystery why this built-out has taken so long. The space was previously home to Eastside Bakery (.net?), which sold coffee and pastries and FroYo ... so it's not like workers were starting from nothing.

Anyway! Some day, the exterior will look like this...

Prepping for the arrival of DF Mavens on 2nd Avenue and St. Mark's Place

[Saturday morning]

On Friday, workers plywooded part of the storefront on the northwest corner of Second Avenue and St. Mark's Place… where a retail outpost of DF Mavens has been in the works, as we reported back in October.

This was from the official news release on the opening:

“We’re very excited to open our first dedicated storefront and plant our flag in the vibrant East Village food scene,” states Malcolm Stogo, a world-renowned ice cream consultant and founder of DF Mavens. “Our new retail outpost will allow us to bring delicious, dairy-free ice cream to a greater segment of New Yorkers who want vegan-friendly dessert options … ”

And here are renderings of the space via Edelman Sultan Knox Wood / Architects LLP:

Working closely with fixture suppliers and lighting designers, we created a unified presentation of DF Mavens’ offerings that are visible and engaging from the street. Storefront elements form a social buffer between the street and the sales counters. A wood canopy projects out to provide shade, and continues into the store to define intimate seating areas against both facades. Passers-by will notice the bright and energetic sales area through the minimalist wood and glass storefront, where custom light fixtures and displays create a sculptural product presentation. The store experience combines classic, natural materials with a modernist sensibility, complimenting DF Mavens’ approach to quality and craft in their forward-thinking desserts.

No word on an official opening date yet. (They originally said Spring 2014.)

Eastside Bakery (.net?) closed down here in April 2013. And once upon a time, the space was home to the Gap in the late 1980s into the early 1990s.

More details on DF Mavens, opening next spring on Second Avenue and St. Mark's Place

As we first reported back on Oct. 17, that prime northwest corner space on Second Avenue and St. Mark's Place has a new tenant — a retail outpost of DF Mavens...

And yesterday, the DFM folks sent along the official news release about this outpost...

Situated on a prime block at the corner of Second Avenue, DF Mavens’ flagship store will open in the spring of 2014 and showcase the brand’s award-winning line of dairy-free ice creams. The store will feature a wide range of vegan snack and beverages, including a full line of baked goods, fresh juices and coffee.

“We’re very excited to open our first dedicated storefront and plant our flag in the vibrant East Village food scene,” states Malcolm Stogo, a world-renowned ice cream consultant and founder of DF Mavens. “Our new retail outpost will allow us to bring delicious, dairy-free ice cream to a greater segment of New Yorkers who want vegan-friendly dessert options in time for the warm weather.”

DF Mavens also announces that four of its pint-sized non-dairy ice creams are now being carried in Whole Foods Markets at Union Square, Columbus Circle, Bowery and Tribeca. These flavors include: Shot of Java, New Orleans Salted Praline, Del Lago Chocolate and Key Lime Pie.

DF Mavens pint-sized offerings include 9 flavors that feature the highest quality ingredients and are categorized by soy-based, coconut-based or sugar-free varieties. Designed to taste as good as any cream-based formula, each flavor is handcrafted by Stogo himself, who has consulted on brands like Haagen Dazs, Stonyfield’s Frozen Yogurt and Colombo.

As you may recall, Stogo, the vegan ice cream shop on East 10th Street just west of Second Avenue, closed for business in November 2012.

Stogo opened in December 2008 at the site of the beloved A. Fontana Shoe Repair, forced out after 45 years due to a big rent hike.
