Police searching for perpetrator who took this flower pot from St. Mark' s Place

These WANTED FOR PETIT LARCENY flyers are along First Avenue (and likely elsewhere...) as the NYPD searches for a suspect accused of stealing a flower pot from outside 44 St. Mark's Place this past May.

The posters look legit... so, what do you suppose was inside that flower pot?

Thanks to EVG reader Lori Kohn for the photo!

Reports: Man shot and killed on East 12th Street outside Campos Plaza last night

[Photo from last night by DR]

A man was shot and killed last night in front of Pedro Albizu Campos Plaza I on East 12th Street near Avenue C, according to published reports.

As PIX 11 reported, police received a 911 call around 10:44 pm. Elliot Caldwell, 23, had been shot in the back, polices sources said. He died later at Bellevue.

A neighbor told the Daily News that Caldwell grew up in Campos Plaza, and would return to visit.

Police haven't made any arrests and the investigation is ongoing, per PIX 11. CBS New York reported that a witness reported seeing a man in a red hoodie running from the scene.

Back in January, according to a report in the Post, an unnamed 23-year-old man had been shot in the left leg. Police said that the victim, who was trying to leave the scene in a cab, "was uncooperative and refused to give them a description of the suspect."

An NYPD patrol tower (SkyWatch) arrived on the scene shortly after the January shooting. The NYPD had recently removed the tower.

Report: Police kill a pit bull during a domestic abuse call on Avenue D

During a domestic abuse call last night in the Lillian Wald Houses, police shot and killed a pit bull that attacked one of the officers, the Daily News reports.

The chaotic scene unfolded around 9 last night on the 10th floor of 30 Avenue D.

The crazed pit bull sunk its teeth into the bottom of one officer’s vest – prompting his partner to whip out his gun and kill the dog with one shot, cops said.

Meanwhile, according to the News, a man in the apartment led police on a foot chase that ended on Avenue B and East Houston, where cops subdued the man with a stun gun.

One witness said the man, surrounded by cops, was screaming and flailing until police used the stun gun.

“It was like prime-time TV,” the witness said.

According to the News, the man struck a 30-year woman, believed to be his niece, during a family fight. The woman then called 911. Charges are reportedly pending.

Police also used a tranquilizer on a second pit bull inside the apartment and delivered the dog to the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, per the report.

A tenant who lives upstairs said she heard barking and a woman’s wails, followed by a loud bang.

“The dog was barking and the woman screamed, and then a single shot,” she told the Daily News. “You hear all sorts of things in the projects. Usually you don’t pay any mind. But this was crazy!”

Report: Dahlia's busted after cops find 43 minors drinking inside locked restaurant

[EVG photo from 2014]

The State Liquor Authority (SLA) has yanked the liquor license from Dahlia's on Second Avenue and East Fifth Street after the NYPD found more than 40 teens drinking inside the Mexican restaurant on Jan. 30, the Post reports.

After reportedly serving teens, the SLA served up an emergency liquor license suspension. The restaurant, known as Mary Ann's until 2014, can still sell food, but not alcohol.

Here's some passages from the Post:

[C]ops found the exits locked and more than 40 well-heeled teens — one only 15 years old — quaffing “monster margaritas” and mojitos.

And!

Cops from the 9th Precinct arrived at Dahlia’s after receiving a 911 call reporting underage drinking. At the crowded bar, they documented that 43 patrons were younger than 18, including five 16-year-olds and a 15-year-old.

Most of the teenage drinkers were from monied Westchester suburbs like Scarsdale and Larchmont, officials said. None had been asked for ID.

SLA officials also said that the holder of the liquor license, Huascar Then, and five servers were arrested and charged with reckless endangerment, unlawfully dealing with a child and criminal nuisance.

SLA Chair Vincent Bradley issued this statement: "In addition to demonstrating a total disregard for the law by blatantly catering to minors, this licensee further jeopardized the health and safety of these young patrons by crowding them into a locked bar to avoid detection by law enforcement."

As you probably know, the 9th Precinct is a 1/2 block from the restaurant.

Updated 10:45 a.m.

I walked by Dahlia's this morning... you wouldn't know that the restaurant isn't serving liquor... see next update below...

Updated noon:

The gates are up now at the restaurant... and the suspended license legalese is posted...

Report: Police shoot man with knife in Jacob Riis housing complex on East 6th Street

The NYPD reportedly shot a knife-wielding man on the seventh floor of the Jacob Riis II housing complex on East Sixth Street and the FDR late last night.

The Daily News reports:

An NYPD sergeant and officer, both assigned to Police Service Area 4, found a 25-year-old man brandishing a knife, cops said. The man ignored the officers’ repeated commands to drop the knife.

“He kept advancing on them in a threatening manner,” an NYPD spokesman said.

The man, who was shot once in the chest, was taken to Bellevue where his injuries didn't appear to be life threatening, per the Daily News. The paper also described the man as "emotionally disturbed."

WPIX reports that the man, whose grandmother lives in the building, has more than 12 prior arrests.

NYPD apparently helping crack down on abandoned-looking bikes

EVG reader Mike H. on the Ninth Street spotted these flyers this morning on non-abandoned-looking bikes along East Ninth Street between Avenue C and Avenue D…

Per the sign:

"Please be avised due to the number of 311 calls and community complaints regarding the bikes on the sidewalk which have been left for extended time and seem to be abandoned.

You are requested to remove the bikes to a proper location within the next three (3) day from today (September 16, 2015) otherwise they will be deem abandoned and Department of Sanitation will remove and discard."

Hmm, not sure if these are legit NYPD signs or the creation of an annoyed resident. Anyway, per the signs, people have until Wednesday to move the bikes… Anyone spot these bike flyers elsewhere?

Probably a good idea for the city to be proactive on this to head off an expose by the Post. ("Even abandoned bikes say de Blasio has been a failure...")

NYPD busts the 2nd Ave. Convenience Store

Last Wednesday, the NYPD shut down the 2nd Ave. Convenience Store between East Fourth Street and East Fifth Street.

Several readers told us about it, though we didn't know the extent of the allegations.

The notice on the gate points out the following activity on the premises: Sale and possession of synthetic marijuana/Stolen property offenses…

The other day, an EVG reader came across about 50 pages of court papers (since removed) that were lying on the sidewalk out front... the reader skimmed about five of the pages, noting a sting operation involving stolen goods.

We went online to find the case.

[Click to go big]

The court documents outline the violations, which include that the store was the site of five undercover "sales" of alleged stolen property since March 25. In each case, "the sale occurred after the confidential informant informed the individual that the aforementioned property was stolen."

The items included four packs of Duracell batteries, three packs of Gillette Fusion razor blades and two packs of Red Bull.

According to the settlement, the store had to agree to a whole bunch of legalese and pay a $6,000 penalty ... but it appears the owners will be able to reopen this week.

Flyers urge removal of patrol tower in Tompkins Square Park

Updated 12:42

The Post spoke with some people in the Park about the Tower's removal.

“I don’t love seeing it here,” said Paul Engler, a 58-year-old business owner. “I think the police were doing their very best to make sure things stayed on the level, but I’d rather see cops walking around the park. That gives people access to them.”

And…

“I didn’t give a f–k it was here and I don’t give a f–k it’s gone. It didn’t change a thing in this park. It didn’t slow nobody’s roll,” a homeless person said Tuesday. “It was all a show to make people think they were doing something. The same people they put that show on for didn’t like. They didn’t like to see that when they’re paying all that money to live here. So now it’s gone.”

Flyers urge removal of patrol tower in Tompkins Square Park

[Click on image for a better read]

Someone has posted these flyers… asking residents to call the 9th Precinct and politely insist that the NYPD "remove the ridiculous and unnecessary guard tower from the center of Tompkins Square Park" ...

Per the flyer's author:

When I spoke with Sgt. Wahlig on 07.22.15 at 11:33 AM, he could not answer. Instead, he bumblingly referred to the recent NY Post and Observer articles as evidence that the guard tower and patrol are needed. He also told me that since I am a parent, I should be glad that the guard tower is there, and that I should feel safer!! HA HA HA HA!!

The tower arrived in the Park on Tuesday. There is already an online petition asking Mayor de Blasio to remove the Skywatch tower.

Meanwhile, in other tower-related activities… concertgoers yesterday reported seeing a drone nearby …

… and EVG reader George Cohen tells us that a patrol tower has been parked at Avenue D and East Eight Street for the past month or so…

Petition asks Mayor de Blasio to remove the Skywatch tower from Tompkins Square Park

The patrol tower that the NYPD installed in the middle of Tompkins Square Park on Tuesday has prompted plenty of discussion. (Our post has 135 comments and counting.)

Yesterday, East Village resident Penny Rand, who has lived in the neighborhood since 1968, launched an online petition asking Mayor de Blasio to remove the tower.

Per the petition:

There is no crime happening in the park that cannot be handled by foot police or officers in patrol cars. The precinct is just around the corner, patrol cars find their way into the park on a moment's notice.

Take down the tower. We don't want it. It makes us feel violated, insulted and angry that you chose this path under the guise of protecting us.

Take down the tower. We don't need it. It is overkill and just a display of muscle that infringes on our enjoyment of the park.

Take down the tower, Mr. Mayor. Take it down. Today.

The goal is 1,000 signatures by end of the month. Find the petition here.

Meanwhile, Gothamist talked to people in the Park yesterday about the tower.

"It's stupid, it's a waste of money," Annick de Lorme told us as she walked her dog past the tower last night. "It doesn't make sense to have two police officers sit around."

De Lorme said that she has lived next to the park on East 7th Street for 13 years, and felt that Tompkins is "one hundred percent" safer than it was when she first moved to the neighborhood.

Gothamist also gets an explanation from the city.

Mayor de Blasio's press secretary, Karen Hinton, told us that the Tompkins Skywatch "is a temporary 'high visibility' police command post to address safety issues on a temporary basis," and that "how long it stays is up to the Boro Commander."

Hinton said that the "NYPD tried to park the Skywatch in the street area, away from the park, but that was problematic. The park was the next best solution."
