[Updated] Another look at the southwest corner of 11th Street and Avenue C

A few weeks ago we had a reader report (thx Jose Garcia!) on the vacant retail space at the southwest corner of 11th Street and Avenue C.

The word from here: A martial arts studio is opening soon ... Vinny & O shared these photos showing how the space is shaping up...



The space has sat empty for nearly two years ... when the New York Healthy Choice (aka Eastside Market) closed after nearly five years in business.

Eastside Market now looks permanently closed

In August, the New York Health Choice (aka Eastside Market) went dark on Avenue C at 11th Street. However, the signage remained up, and there was some talk that the store would eventually reopen.

But this past week, workers removed all the store signage... and the storefront is no longer on the rental market.

The market opened in December 2012. They closed for renovations starting in December 2015 ... returning to business in May 2016. It was operated by the owners of Yankee Deli across 11th Street.

New York Healthy Choice returns as New York Health Choice on Avenue C

New York Healthy Choice closed back in December on Avenue C at 11th Street. There weren't any notices on the door for customers about a closure, temporary or otherwise.

At the time, several readers said that the market, owned by the folks who run the two Yankee Delis (and pizzeria) on Avenue C, was undergoing a renovation.

Sure enough, the corner space recently came back to life... now going as New York Health Choice (aka Eastside Market)...





The concept is basically the same. A worker explained the other day that they just rearranged the space. The meat and fish counters are now in the back of the store... and they're now making salads to go up front...



The market first opened on Dec. 20, 2012.

An EVG reader notes that the gates have been down for at least 10 days now (perhaps longer?) here on Avenue C and East 11th Street.

The grocery, which sold fresh produce, meats and seafood, opened on Dec. 20, 2012 via the owners of Yankee Deli across East 11th Street.

New York Healthy Choice opens today on Avenue C

Several of us have been curious about what to expect from New York Healthy Choice, the new market opening on Avenue C at East 11th Street. Bobby Williams notes that the store opens this morning at 7.

Per an EVG commenter on last week's Healthy Choice post:

The owner of this is the same person/people who own Yankee Deli and the incoming Yankee Pizza across the street.

I spoke with a couple of people at Yankee Deli a few months ago about it and it is essentially going to be a fancier grocery store for the neighborhood with a — their words — "HUUUGEEE butcher counter". So, yay!, good meat.

Was only a week or so from opening at the time of Sandy, but obviously that timeline had to be changed.

The last tenant, the Monk Thrift Shop, closed in December 2010. At the time, neighbors heard that a bank branch would open here.

Rolling out the fruit and vegetable stands at the incoming New York Healthy Choice

Back in February, signs first appeared for something called New York Healthy Choice on Avenue C at East 11th Street ... Chico created murals for the gates in July ... we haven't seen much activity here of late (granted, this isn't an intersection we cross with great frequency... and, like the other businesses along here, the basement was flooded during the Sandy surge...)

Exchanged emails with EVG reader Rob yesterday... who's also curious about what New York Healthy Choice will be — A deli? A mini Whole Foods? A place to buy a box of Annie's Mac & Cheese?

All the above?
