Raclette moves from Avenue A to East 12th Street

Raclette has left its 14-seat home at 195 Avenue A at 12th Street and moved around the corner to the larger confines of 511 E. 12th St., the former Northern Spy space.

The restaurant, which serves French and Swiss Raclette, Croques and Tartine, opened to some fanfare in February 2015.

Northern Spy closed this past February after six years in business.

Former Northern Spy space for rent on East 12th Street

Northern Spy decided to close this past February after six years of serving seasonal menu items with locally sourced ingredients.

The owners said that "2015 was a tough year and we did not manage to pull the nose up to restore the flight altitude we once enjoyed. We're hanging it up while we still have the buttons on our pants."

While we haven't spotted any for lease signs, the space at 511 E. 12th St. is on the market. The Eastern Consolidated listing notes that the rent is $6,400 for 2,000 square feet (1,000 of it is the basement). There is also an additional $225,000 in key money.

There's not much other information, other than that the address features a "fully built out restaurant" with a full liquor license. The restaurant received a full liquor license last fall. (They had been turned down for full liquor starting in 2010... and in April 2012)

On April 16-17, the space served as a pop-up burger joint for Fleishers Craft Butchery, operated by one of Northern Spy's former owners.

Burgers will be popping up this weekend at the former Northern Spy space on East 12th Street

After six years, Northern Spy's owners decided to call it quits this past February. However, the space at 511 E. 12th St. between Avenue A and Avenue B will be put to use again this weekend.

Here are details via the EVG inbox...

Fleishers Craft Butchery is running a pop-up burger joint for one weekend ONLY, at the former Northern Spy Food Co. space today through Sunday. (Northern Spy Food Co. partner Christophe Hille is also CFO and an owner of Fleishers — hence the utilization of the NSFCo space for one last time.)

Menu

• Classic American Burger $12
Classic blend of NY State pasture-raised beef with American cheese, special sauce, red onion and lettuce

• 100% Grass-fed Burger $13
NY State grass-fed beef with lettuce, tomato and onion

• The Bacon Egg & Cheeseburger $15
Made from NY State pasture-raised beef & bacon blend, sunny fried egg, American cheese

• Beef Fat Fries $6

• Northern Spy's Famous Kale Salad $12

•Beer, Wine and Brunch Cocktails will be available

And, these burgers are for a good cause: for every burger Fleishers sells at the pop-up, it is donating 6 oz of NY State pasture-raised beef to Trinity Lower East Side's “Service and Food for the Homeless” kitchen on East Ninth Street and Avenue B.

Report: Northern Spy closes for good on Feb. 17

After six years on East 12th Street between Avenue A and Avenue B, Northern Spy is calling it a day.

Grub Street has this from co-owner Chris Ronis

We've had a great run and are very proud of what we accomplished in this space in the last six years, but 2015 was a tough year and we did not manage to pull the nose up to restore the flight altitude we once enjoyed. We're hanging it up while we still have the buttons on our pants. The upshot we have about two weeks left before it's lights-out for Northern Spy, with our final service being Wednesday, February 17th.

Eater has more here.

If you want to stop by for a last meal, then don't do it this evening...

Northern Spy will be closed tonight for a private event. We apologize for the inconvenience. See you tomorrow!

The Post are meatheads when it come to $18 plates of vegetarian food

On Page 3 today, the Post makes a big fucking deal about a main vegetarian course at Northern Spy on East 12th Street that features roasted carrots for "a stunning $18."

Meanwhile, back on Page 42, there's a feature noting that "veggies step out from the sidelines and into starring roles at these NYC restaurants."

Back here, the Post doesn't seem outraged by the puny looking mushroom dish at Empellon Cocina on First Avenue... that costs $18...

What's the difference?

Katie Holmes dines at 'Northern Sea Food Co.'

This image and copy came in over the transom from some media outlet:

Katie Holmes and her companion stop off for lunch at Northern Sea Food Co. in the East Village. Katie was flanked by security at all times which left autograph hunters frustrated. The pair were on their way home from the Calvin Klein fashion show in NYC.

Mmmm! Must check out this Northern Sea Food Co. place!

Meanwhile, Katie may want to try Northern Spy at the same location.

All is well at Northern Spy

The folks at Northern Spy sent us a tweet earlier today in response to our report this morning. Per the tweet: "all's well, our peeps handled it as best they could considering the guy's state." I asked if anyone there knew the man who was arrested. Northern Spy said that it was random, though the man does live nearby.

Previously on EV Grieve:

Wild scene in front of Northern Spy this morning

A reader notes a disturbance this morning on 12th Street between Avenue A and Avenue B... in front of Northern Spy, where a man in a gray t-shirt and shorts was trying to enter the restaurant.

Per the reader, who also provided the photos: "Some of the guys from the restaurant were trying to restrain him and kept telling him to get down on the ground, but he wasn't listening, and he was even trying to open the door to get into the restaurant. All in all, it was about six guys trying to get control over him."

The man's t-shirt was torn to shreds by the time police arrived. The man was placed inside an ambulance. "I suspect the guy was either drunk or mentally ill."

Northern Spy expands

Six-month-old Northern Spy on 12th Street was closed on Monday and Tuesday for some renovations...

The restaurant reopened last night... and team Spy have simply removed the cases that sold to-go items in the back and replaced them with a few more tables... makes sense, given that the place seems to be getting more popular...
