[Updated] Waiting for POTUS on Astor Place

[Photo by EVG White House correspondent Steven]

President Obama is in town this afternoon and evening for two fundraising events. He also taped a segment for "The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon."

Anyway, in case you were wondering about the massive NYPD presence and barricades on Astor Place, Lafayette, East Houston, etc.

Updated 6:15 p.m.

Those new Cadillacs are pretty nice!

If you missed the President just now, you can also see him during a pop-up visit at Webster Hall at 2 a.m.

Here's the Presidential motorcade passing Avenue A at East Houston a little earlier... via EVG reader Ronnie... (highlight at the 19- to 24-second mark...)

The Bowery 2008: waiting for Bond and Obama

I was looking for something about the Bowery on Google Street View the other day when something somewhat entertaining happens around East Fourth Street... the image date changes when you head north past East Fourth Street ... and you're in October 2008...

... where, as you can see, we were waiting for the new James Bond movie ... the 2008 election (can Obama do it?) and the monstrosity of 2 Cooper Square... Things don't seem too different today... we're waiting for the new James Bond movie ... the 2012 election (can Obama do it?) ... and perhaps a new 9-story hotel on East Fourth Street...

The Obamas on East Sixth Street

Outside Eastern Bloc... these have been up for a few weeks since the Obama fundraiser... (you can read about it in The Washington Post ... and The Villager).

Just wanted the photos for the archives. Let me know if you spot any Romney posters up...

East 12th Street and Avenue A tonight: Waiting for the President to pass by

Our photographer friend Michael Sean Edwards was among the many stuck waiting at 12th Street and Avenue A tonight ... He passed along a few photos from the corner...

... and the money shot...

So what was the story? The NYPD wasn't letting anyone cross 12th Street from C to Fifth Avenue for nearly 30 minutes? One person told me that, though we weren't sure exactly what the wait time was...

[Updated] All the President's motorcades

Lockdown! (Pretty much.) Between First Avenue and Avenue A (all of East 12th Street actually)... waiting for the President's motorcade to pass... Here's why.

[Updated] East 12th Street prepped for Obama visit

As you likely know by now, President Obama is in town this evening... Among other things, he'll be holding a dinner fund-raiser thing at the Gotham Bar & Grill (we hear that the roasted cauliflower risotto is good!) on East 12th Street between University Place and Fifth Avenue...

Here are Officers Weber and Sanchez...

Meanwhile, multiple readers have noted an incredible NYPD presence in the area ... and there are reports of the NYPD randomly towing cars all along 12th Street — down to Avenue C. And a reader notes that parts of Avenue C are shut down. There's even a rumor that the fund-raiser tonight at a private residence is in the East Village (note to self: pick up some hummus).

[Thanks to Christina Holmes for the photos ... and Shawn Chittle for the tips]

Updated: A few photos from Bobby Williams...

NYPD raises Shepard Fairey threat level to 'high'

Heh. No! Just the NYPD protecting the Houston corridor for the Obama motorcade this evening...

Many thanks to EV Grieve reader Anna for the photos...

Thankfully the Penistrator didn't deface Shep's work for the President to see...

President's day at Cooper Union

So following up on our exclusive from earlier ... President Obama gave a speech today at Cooper Union in which he may or may not have offered his views on the first round of the NFL Draft taking place later tonight.

Anyway, many thanks to EV Grieve reader Ryan for passing along a few photos from today... such as the President in his limo...

...there's former Gov. Mario C!...

Cooper Union President George Campbell Jr. showing off the cufflinks Obama gave him...

...and a fight between a communist and an anarchist/activist...

Ryan also said that he saw Lloyd Blankfein (the nerve!) and Rev. Al Sharpton. "Someone thought they saw Steve Jobs, but I can't confirm that he was there." Oh! Hope that Steve didn't see these!

Prepping for the Prez

As I exclusively reported, President Obama will be giving a speech later today at Cooper Union. Meanwhile, yesterday afternoon, the NYPD was busy placing barriers on parts of the Bowery and East Houston. Due to security reasons, I cannot divulge the street names where these barriers are located.

Anyway! EV Grieve reader Elliot noted: "The Tea Party folks could get a nice photo op of his motorcade rolling past the Red Square Building with Lenin saluting from high above."

Meanwhile, I hate to even mention this... but, EV Heave has a full report on Cooper Union's efforts to thwart the Serial Vomiter from striking today. We do hope that EV Heave is wrong... because, quite frankly, people haven't been this excited about a visitor since they thought they saw Justin Bieber on the L train.

Meanwhile, in Los Angeles...a new president takes office

The Los Angeles Times accidentally called our new president Barack H. Hussein in a post on the full text of Obama's inaugural speech...

And readers were nice about it, really.

You might want to fix the final word of this piece ... he is President Obama, not President Hussein.

Barack H. Hussein - a typo or a fruedian slip?

Posted by: flatop | January 20, 2009 at 09:53 AM

I apologize if I'm missing something obvious, but why does it say that the speech was authored by "Barack H. Hussein"? I'm relatively sure the word "Obama" should be in there somewhere.

Thanks to those astute readers who pointed out an error in Barack Obama's name as it's written at the end of his inaugural address. We've since corrected the error.
