As Westville Bakery exits, Superiority Burger set to expand on 9th Street

From the EVG tipline: Westville Bakery closed as of Sunday on Ninth Street between Avenue A and First Avenue. While there isn't any official notice of a closure, temporary or permanent, the shop was not open yesterday during usual business hours ... the space also looked as if someone emptied it out.

No one from Westville responded to an email or Instagram message about the closing.

Meanwhile, the tipster tells us that Superiority Burger will be taking over this space.

And the folks at Superiority confirmed the upcoming expansion, noting that they will also be keeping their current (and original and small) home across Ninth Street. 

Superiority also confirmed that the new space will not be used for indoor seating, and they are still shaping up their future plans for the Ninth Street spaces...
Westville Bakery, which offered a variety of sweets and cafe fare, debuted here in October 2018. It appeared to have a solid following — even after Sullivan Street Bakery moved in a few storefronts away in October.

Superiority opened in the East Village in June 2015... and has pretty much been a veggie juggernaut since it unleashed its first batch of quickly vintage Yuba-verde sandwiches and, say, hakurei turnip slaw.

ICYMI: Westville Bakery is open

In case you missed this post from Sunday morning... Westville Bakery had its soft opening that day at 433 E. Ninth St. between First Avenue and Avenue A.

This is the first dedicated bakery from Westville, the mini-chain of vegetable-friendly restaurants, whose outposts include one on Avenue A at 11th Street.

The bakery, serving a variety of cakes, pies, cookies and seasonal desserts as well as other cafe fare (quiche, for instance), is open daily from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Free sample alert: Westville Bakery softly opens today on 9th Street



Updated 10/29 — the bakery is now open...

Westville Bakery debuts today — 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. — at 433 E. Ninth St. between First Avenue and Avenue A, EVG contributor Steven reports. (These photos are from Friday.)



They'll be expanding on what you can find at the various Westville locations, including on Avenue A and 11th Street. Eater had more details last month on what to expect:

Westville’s longtime pastry chef Meital Cohen will be in charge of the food, focusing on sweets such as carrot cake, apple and blueberry pies, assorted cookies, and seasonal specials like a dragon fruit smoothie bowl with berries, almond butter, and granola. But there will also be a savory menu featuring sandwiches, tartines, quiches, and salads. Specific tartines include ones with smoked trout, crème fraîche, and chives or marinated fennel and chickpea salad with whipped feta, while quiches may have roasted vegetables and herb goat cheese or grilled onions and mixed mushrooms. Expect vegan and gluten-free options too.

This space was Zucker Bakery for the past seven years. Zucker's owner decided to retire from the business on July 1.

Signs for Westville Bakery just went up on Ninth Street between Avenue A and First Avenue ... where this storefront will be selling the cakes, pies, cookies and seasonal desserts offered at the six Westville locations, including on Avenue A and 11th Street. (The baking is done in Chelsea.)

Jay Strauss, Westville's founder, told EVG correspondent Steven they hope to be open in six weeks.

This space was Zucker Bakery for the past seven years. Zucker's owner decided to retire from the business on July 1.

Westville, the vegetable-centric restaurant, first opened here in 2003.
